Around 95 cases of VHFs were recorded in Iraq
The Ministry of Health announced new official statistics on hemorrhagic fever - VHF cases and deaths on Tuesday in Iraq. "The latest statistics issued by the Ministry's Public Health Department showed that 95 cases of VHFs have been recorded since the beginning of the year, including 13 deaths. The last week saw no deaths, but only infections," said the Ministry's official spokesperson, Saif Al-Badr, to the Iraqi News Agency - INA. He explained that "all cases were recorded among livestock breeders, butchers, and those working in the field of raising, transporting, and slaughtering animals." The Ministry recommended purchasing meat only from authorized slaughterhouses, storing meat at very low temperatures, and cooking it at very high temperatures, with special tools for cutting it, calling for "referring to the nearest healthcare facility when the initial symptoms of the disease appear, which include high fever, fatigue, and physical pain." "If the diagnosis of the disease is delayed until bleeding from body orifices or under the skin, the likelihood of complications and death increases. Early detection has previously contributed to saving dozens of cases," highlighted Al-Badr. He emphasized that "all Ministry of Health institutions in Baghdad, the governorates, and the Kurdistan Region are equipped to diagnose VHFs through specialized laboratories. There are also isolation wards designated for those infected or suspected of being infected until the diagnosis is confirmed." The Ministry of Health circulated awareness messages through the media, including posters and short, animated awareness videos. Al-Badr asserted that "the epidemiological situation is under control, and the disease is being monitored daily by the Minister of Health, the Public Health Department, and technical teams."

Ethris Receives €10 Million EU4Health Grant to Support Clinical Development and Expand Antiviral Applications of Lead mRNA Candidate ETH47

The funding will support NoVir, a comprehensive project including several preclinical and clinical studies to evaluate the potential of ETH47, Ethris' lead, first-in-class mRNA-based antiviral therapy. Designed as a broad-spectrum antiviral with a virus- and mutation-independent mechanism of action, ETH47 offers a promising approach for pandemic preparedness. The NoVir study will run from May 1, 2025, to April 31, 2027 and will include the following projects: A clinical rhinovirus challenge study in asthmatic and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, populations at high risk for severe viral infections. A clinical study in healthy volunteers infected with influenza to assess ETH47's antiviral efficacy. Preclinical research exploring ETH47's protective effects against paramyxoviruses, orthomyxoviruses, coronaviridae, and bunyaviruses, including those responsible for viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs). Investigation into ETH47's impact on intravaginal, ocular, and systemic infections, through multiple routes of administration, expanding its potential use beyond respiratory illnesses. Evaluation of ETH47's ability to enhance the efficacy of existing antiviral treatments through synergistic effects. NoVir includes collaborations with the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Aarhus University for the preclinical research of ETH47's protective effect against different virus classes and via different infection routes. The universities' research is driven by their leading virology laboratories, which empower the project with expertise in virus systems and their replication, as well as with their established cell and animal models. The EU4Health programme was established in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and is a European Union initiative aimed at strengthening Europe's healthcare systems and improving preparedness for future health crises. With a budget of €4.4 billion, it focuses on enhancing health promotion, disease prevention, crisis response, and healthcare access. Iraq's Dhi Qar: First hemorrhagic fever case of 2025
Shafaq News/ Iraq's Dhi Qar province has confirmed its first case of viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) for 2025, authorities announced on Sunday. Ali Abdul-Sattar, director of the Veterinary Hospital in Dhi Qar, told Shafaq News Agency that the infection was identified in a man in his forties from the Al-Gharraf district, north of Al-Nasiriyah. 'The affected area has been sealed off, with tick pesticide spraying operations underway and restrictions imposed on livestock movement to limit further infections,' Abdul-Sattar said. Notably, hemorrhagic fever, a group of viruses that can ravage the body's systems, experienced a surge in 2024. In July, local health officials in Dhi Qar province, located in southern Iraq, confirmed 26 cases of hemorrhagic fever, resulting in four fatalities. The infections were recorded across multiple districts, with the highest concentration reported in Al-Shatra.
