From The Hindu, August 6, 1975: Police raid ‘bogus' crossword puzzle firms

New Delhi, Aug. 5: The office premises of 12 'bogus' firms allegedly cheating a large number of innocent persons through false crossword puzzle contests were to-day raided by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police in different parts of the city. 'Proprietors' of two such firms, Chander Prakash of Rani Bagh and Sarinder Kumar of Anand Nagar were arrested on charges of cheating, according to a press note issued by the Delhi Police. The modus operandi of these rucketeers was to collect the postal addresses of a large number of people, the press note said. The 'firm' would prepare a complete list of these people with their postal addresses and despatch literature regarding the crossword puzzle contest. For the first second and third prize winners, attractive articles such as motor cycles, tape recorders and transistors were offered as prizes. The puzzle contest would be so simple that anyone would be able to solve it without much mental exercise. Once the contestant despatched his puzzle entry he would fall in the trap of the racketeer. In due course of time the firm would inform all the contestants that they had won the first prize. All the winners were asked to send Rs. 50 as licence fee package and postal charges to enable the firm to despatch transistors to firms. In fact, a very inferior quality locally manufactured transistor would be sent to each one of them by VPP for Rs. 125. Invariably, the contestant would have already shelled out a sum of Rs. 48 to take delivery of the prize. He would thus be cheated by over Rs. 100 as the cost of the transistor will not be more than Rs. 70 to 73.

Revel Showcases Leadership in Grid-Optimized Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging at New Williamsburg Superhub, Scaling Impact on NYC's Energy Transition

Using leading virtual power plant software, Revel supports New York City's grid during extreme heat events showcasing the future of climate resiliency in an increasingly electrified sector NEW YORK, August 05, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As electrification surges across New York City, Revel is showcasing leadership in grid-optimized electric vehicle (EV) charging. The Brooklyn-based electric mobility pioneer has officially activated SmartKit Demand Response technology at its new Supercharging Hub located at the historic Dime Building (275 South 5th Street, Williamsburg) — a state-of-the-art charging site that supports the city's clean energy transition while reducing emissions and grid strain. This marks Revel's fourth year participating in grid services across its various facilities. The Williamsburg facility represents the latest milestone in Revel's partnership with SmartKit®, a virtual power plant (VPP) software developed by Logical Buildings. By strategically shifting the timing of vehicle charging sessions, Revel helps alleviate pressure on the grid during peak hours — when electricity is both dirtiest and most expensive — while generating revenue through utility-provided Demand Response incentives. As New York City accelerates toward a carbon-free grid under its ambitious climate goals, grid-interactive electric vehicle infrastructure will be critical. Charging intelligently, particularly during extreme weather and demand spikes, reduces emissions from peaker plants — which can emit twice as much CO₂ and 20 times more NOₓ than traditional power sources. Revel's grid-responsive operations were put to the test as New York City kicked off the 2025 Demand Response season with three consecutive curtailment events from June 23 to June 25, many lasting 10+ hours each. This sustained effort, which required Revel to dynamically schedule charging loads across its infrastructure, played a key role in supporting grid stability during an unprecedented strain on the electric system due to extreme heat with temperatures soaring in the triple digits on June 24. "Our Williamsburg Superhub proves that EV infrastructure can be a grid asset, not a strain, by dynamically responding to grid stress signals," said Paul Suhey, Revel COO & Co-Founder. "As electricity demand rises with electrification and continued extreme heat events, smart charging plays a crucial role in helping New York build a resilient, decarbonized future." The severity of the recent grid stress cannot be overstated. On Tuesday, June 24, the utility provider in New York and Westchester forecasted electricity usage to reach 100.71% of the system peak — a rare and urgent grid stressor. (By comparison, Demand Response events are typically triggered when demand hits just 92% of peak capacity). Additionally, the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) reported that peak electricity demand reached 31,857 megawatts (MW) during the three-day heat wave—the highest level recorded since 2016.1 During these critical events Revel's actions provided immediate and measurable grid-positive relief. At its Williamsburg Superhub, which houses 15 public EV charging stalls capable of fully charging a vehicle in 20 minutes or less, Revel curtailed 250 kilowatts of load, contributing to avoided emissions from fossil fuel peaker plants. This targeted load reduction is expected to yield tens of thousands in grid services revenue — while delivering instantaneous and impactful resiliency for the local power grid. "Revel is showing how electric mobility companies can actively participate in electric load management," said David Klatt, President of Logical Buildings. "By using SmartKit, Revel is turning electric load into flexible, responsive capacity — a replicable model for cities looking to decarbonize while electrifying. As cities decarbonize, electric use will rise—and this new electric demand needs to be grid-interactive." The Revel–SmartKit® partnership first launched in 2021 with the company's electric moped fleet and has now evolved into a powerful model for full-scale EV infrastructure. With the new Williamsburg Superhub online and integrated into New York's Demand Response programs, Revel is actively shaping the next phase of grid flexibility and reliability. Former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma criticises NPP govt over its failure

Shillong, July 31 (UNI) Leader of Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly, Dr. Mukul M. Sangma, today said that the opposition parties - Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Voice of the People Party (VPP) - will expose all the irregularities of the National People's Party (NPP)-led government. 'We (TMC and VPP) will take on the State government and expose their self-centric agendas and their anti-people programmes,' the former Chief Minister said. Sangma's statement comes a day after lone Congress legislator and Opposition Chief Whip, Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, joined the NPP, leaving the grand-old party with no representation in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly. Sangma voiced confidence that TMC and VPP are capable enough to deal with the ruling dispensation. 'They (government) may be attempting to stifle the voice of the opposition, but that is their wishful thinking. Opposition is opposition whatever the number are there in the opposition bench,' the senior-most legislator in the assembly asserted. The former Chief Minister cautioned the Conrad Sangma-led government that it cannot continue with the impunity and that the opposition parties will ensure that the government is held accountable for its irregularities. Pointing out that various kind of unfortunate things unfolding in different parts of the state, including the disappearance of 4,000 metric tonnes of coal from two designated depots, the TMC leader said, 'It is up to the people of the State to visualise the intent and priority of this government.' Hitting out at the NPP-led government for its failure to address the pressing issue of illegal influx into the state, Sangma said that the government's actions regarding the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) and the long-standing demand for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) were 'nothing more than political rhetoric'. 'The government has failed to come up with an effective and transparent mechanism to check illegal influx. They are simply misguiding the people on MRSSA and ILP,' Sangma alleged. Claiming that the rights and identity of Meghalaya's indigenous population were being compromised, the TMC legislator urged the government to move beyond statements and take meaningful, constitutionally sound actions. Battery-powered homes support Blatchford's virtual power plant

It's a Canadian first. Article content Edmonton's Blatchford neighbourhood, the former municipal airport site being transformed by the city into a sustainable residential community for urban living, is now home to this country's first energy storage-based virtual power plant. Article content On pace to integrate 100 net zero houses — the project is just in its early stages at a 10 per cent VPP build out, expected to reach 25 per cent growth by the end of this year — the VPP should enhance renewable energy adoption even further in Blatchford and also deliver savings to homeowners, officials said. Article content 'Blatchford is a unique proof of concept for innovations in sustainable urban living and renewable energy — so it's really fitting that this first-of-its-kind integrated VPP is launching right here with one of our homebuilders (Landmark Homes),' said Tom Lumsden, Blatchford's development manager in regards to the VPP launch in late June. 'By combining green-built, highly energy-efficient homes, a fully renewable District Energy Utility and a neighbourhood designed to encourage a vehicle-free lifestyle, Blatchford is emerging as a hub for planet-friendly land development, construction, and technologies.' Article content 'Instead of throwing a pebble in the ocean, we're dropping a boulder into a lake and we can really create ripples,' said Geoff Ferrell, senior vice-president, Global C&I and VPP Project Business, sonnen USA, noting you could describe a VPP as a distributed energy management system. Article content The batteries, included at no cost in the purchase of a Landmark net-zero home in Blatchford and likely installed in the utility room, are long-lasting and should have a life span of at least 10, if not 20 years, said sonnen. They use advanced Lithium Iron Phosphate technology, and sonnen said this offers enhanced safety and longevity compared to lithium-ion batteries. Article content Article content While the 100 batteries in the Landmark Homes aren't enough to save the grid on its own — it will represent nearly half a megawatt of power and more than two megawatt hours of storage capacity to support the energy grid — Tallas said you have to start somewhere and this is a good start. Article content And a start it is. While this Edmonton project will likely take to mid-2027 to complete and fully ramp up this first VPP and its 100 batteries, sonnen plans to launch further VPPs throughout Alberta — sonnen said it believes Calgary would be a good future choice — and other Canadian regions, providing more than 18 MW of energy and 60 megawatt hours of grid support over the next three years.
