Burning car explodes, kills 1 in Lebanon, Oregon
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An explosion from inside a burning car rattled a Lebanon neighborhood early Saturday, killing one person and scattering debris into yards and streets, the Lebanon Fire District said. Three cars were on fire, including two that were fully engulfed, by the time firefighters got to the scene near 700 W. Grant Street around 9:20 a.m. Two of the cars were near a house, and crews worked to keep the flames from extending into the house. West Linn woman, 81, in white VW Jetta still missing As more fire crews arrived, the remains of one person who had been living inside one of the cars was discovered. That person's identity has not been released at this time. The blaze was under control in about 20 minutes, authorities said, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Captain Johan Van Dyk, spokesperson for the Tshwane District Police, reported a dramatic turn of events on May 12, when a motorist narrowly escaped an attempted hijacking on the M10 road in the Cullinan policing area. At approximately 3 pm, armed suspects emerged and confronted the unsuspecting driver, sparking a swift police response that led to multiple arrests. Van Dyk explained that the motorist had pulled over on the M10 road in the Cullinan policing area when a white VW Jetta suddenly stopped in front of him, blocking his path. Moments later, armed suspects jumped out of the vehicle and advanced towards him, threatening him at gunpoint in an apparent hijacking attempt. ' According to the victim, he had pulled over to the side of the road when a white VW Jetta stopped in front of him. Three men exited the vehicle — one armed with a firearm — and instructed him to get out of his car. ' He added that just as the suspects were about to carry out the hijacking, they spotted a police vehicle approaching the scene. Startled by the sudden presence of law enforcement, the suspects hastily abandoned their plan, ordered the victim to leave the area, and scrambled back into their getaway vehicle before speeding off in an attempt to evade arrest. ' The nearby police officers were immediately alerted and responded swiftly. They managed to intercept the suspects and successfully apprehended all three. ''Upon searching the individuals, officers recovered a firearm with eight rounds of ammunition. A dramatic turn of events saw police arrest three suspects for attempted hijacking and possession of an illegal firearm in Cullinan on May 12. The incident occurred around 15:10. According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, a motorist was driving along the M10 when he was approached by armed suspects in an attempted hijacking. According to his statement, the victim pulled over to the side of the road when a white VW Jetta stopped in front of him. 'Three men exited the vehicle, one armed with a firearm and instructed him to get out of his car.' Van Dyk explained that before the suspects could proceed with their crime, they noticed a police vehicle approaching. He said the suspects panicked, ordered the victim to leave, and quickly fled back into their vehicle. 'The nearby police officers were immediately alerted and responded swiftly. They managed to intercept the suspects and apprehended all three,' van Dyk said. He said a police search of the suspects uncovered a firearm with eight rounds of bullets. He said the suspects were unable to provide a valid explanation for possession of the weapon. 'The suspects were arrested and charged with attempted hijacking as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,' said van Dyk. He added that further investigation is underway to determine if the suspects are linked to other criminal activities. White VW Jettas linked to two fatal pedestrian crashes in Despatch
The community of Despatch in Nelson Mandela Bay are left in shock after two pedestrians were killed in separate road accidents in Khayamnandi in the Eastern Cape. Both accidents, involving white VW Jettas, occurred on consecutive Saturdays, just two weeks apart. The first accident took place on Saturday, 5 April 2025, where a two-year-old boy was struck by a white VW Jetta while playing on Albert Letuli Street in Kayamnandi. According to police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge, the incident occurred around 17:00. The child's parents transported him to the hospital using private transport, but he was declared dead upon arrival. Beetge said to The South African that a culpable homicide case was opened and is being investigated by SAPS Despatch. Exactly 14 days later, on Saturday, 19 April, around the same time, a 62-year-old woman was killed on Old Uitenhage Road while crossing towards Kayamnandi. The vehicle, also described as a white VW Jetta, fled the scene without stopping. According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, the woman died on the scene before emergency services could arrive. Both incidents occurred in the Despatch area, but on different roads. While the cases are not currently linked, police have noted the similarities in timing, location and vehicle description.
