White VW Jettas linked to two fatal pedestrian crashes in Despatch
The first accident took place on Saturday, 5 April 2025, where a two-year-old boy was struck by a white VW Jetta while playing on Albert Letuli Street in Kayamnandi. According to police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge, the incident occurred around 17:00. The child's parents transported him to the hospital using private transport, but he was declared dead upon arrival.
Beetge said to The South African that a culpable homicide case was opened and is being investigated by SAPS Despatch.
Exactly 14 days later, on Saturday, 19 April, around the same time, a 62-year-old woman was killed on Old Uitenhage Road while crossing towards Kayamnandi. The vehicle, also described as a white VW Jetta, fled the scene without stopping.
According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, the woman died on the scene before emergency services could arrive.
Both incidents occurred in the Despatch area, but on different roads. While the cases are not currently linked, police have noted the similarities in timing, location and vehicle description.

Suspected cop killers in gun battle with police
Suspected criminals, it seems, have become more brazen in South Africa wanting to engage in gun battles with police. A shoot-out between police and two suspected criminals in Inanda late last night (12 August) points to this. Police were following up on leads that two suspects, linked to the murder of a police officer, attempted murder, a chain of house robberies and armed robberies, when they (police) came under fire. Colonel Robert Netshiunda, SAPS police spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal said: 'When police arrived at the house [in Maplazini area] they introduced themselves as police officers and instructed the suspects to open the door. 'The suspects responded with gunshots towards police officers from inside the house and police were left with choice but to return fire in self-defence.' In the ensuing gunfight police managed to take control of the situation leading to the fatal shooting of the two suspects. According to Netshiunda the suspects aged 20 and 21 years old sustained fatal wounds. Police officers were not injured during the gun battle. They recovered what might possibly be a stolen firearm from the suspects. The serial number on the gun was filed off. Another brazen gun battle occurred between police and four suspected criminals during a foiled house robbery in Pinetown yesterday (12 August). Police responded to a house robbery in Paradise Valley, Pinetown only to be shot at by the robbers. This is how it played out according to Netshiunda. When police approached the house on Oxford Road, they noticed a suspicious looking VW Polo moving away from the scene. Attempts by police to stop the vehicle were ignored by the driver. 'The driver of the vehicle ignored police instruction's and sped off. A high speed chase ensued and on Underwood Road, the suspects opened fire towards police officers. Police returned fire and a shoot-out ensued,' said Netshiunda. The suspects were wounded during the shoot-out and three were admitted to hospital under police guard. The fourth suspect evaded police and is on the run. The three injured suspects are expected to appear in court when they are 'fit to do so'. In a SAPS Facebook post four days ago, Acting Police Minister, Professor Firoz Cachalia reacted to the dangers police face while undertaking their duty. This, following the deaths of police officers who were ambushed while transporting awaiting trial prisoner, Jabulani Moyo. 'Their [police] sacrifice in the line of duty is a stark reminder of the daily dangers faced by our police officers as they work to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of all South Africans. We owe them — and every officer who puts on the blue uniform — a debt of gratitude that words alone cannot fully express,' said Cachalia. Cape Town rocked by mass murder in sleepy Muizenberg
Cape Town has been rocked by yet another mass murder, with police confirming that four men were shot dead in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Overcome Heights in Muizenberg. According to Colonel Andrè Traut, the bodies of the victims – aged between 20 and 37 – were discovered at approximately 05:30 on Mountain Road, each having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. 'The murders are being investigated by detectives attached to the Anti-Gang Unit, who are working tirelessly to determine the events that led to the incident,' said Traut. While gang-related violence is a suspected motive, it has not been confirmed, and investigators are keeping all lines of enquiry open. Authorities have urged community members to assist the investigation by providing any information that could lead to arrests. 'Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to use the MySAPS mobile app. Callers may remain anonymous and all details will be treated with the utmost confidentiality,' Traut added. This latest shooting adds to a growing number of mass killings in the Western Cape, many of which have been linked to gang warfare, drug turf battles, and extortion rackets in recent years. Overcome Heights, in particular, has long been plagued by violent crime and gang activity, leaving residents in a constant state of fear. The Anti-Gang Unit remains on the scene, and forensic teams have been combing the area for clues throughout the day. No arrests have been made at this stage. Police are calling for calm in the community as investigations continue. Woman attempts suicide as loan shark increases interest to 400%
A woman attempted suicide in KwaZulu-Natal, Phoenix on Monday, 11 August 2025, after a loan shark unexpectedly increased the interest rate. Initially, the interest rate was 50%; however, the loan shark increased it to 400%. They demanded R100 000 in payback for a R20 000 loan. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the woman's family mentioned that the loan shark changed the interest rate to 400% after seeing that the debt was almost settled. After the woman resisted paying the high interest, the loan shark threatened to send a group of men to repossess her car if the money was not paid. Feeling scared, the woman borrowed smaller amounts of money to pay the loan shark as he continued making demands. The woman called family members and informed them that she intended to jump off a bridge because she had become overwhelmed with debt. She then requested her family to take care of her child. RUSA Spokesperson Prem Balram said that they informed the family about the next steps they need to take to get help for the woman. A suspect was arrested in Verulam, KZN on Tuesday, 12 August 2025, after attacking a family with a knife. The 36-year-old male suspect entered a property on Aslaam Road in Riyadh with intentions to rob the residence. Two family members were having tea in their yard when they suddenly noticed the suspect approaching them. 'The 78-year-old woman and her male domestic worker fled into the house, followed by the suspect. The robber produced a knife and attempted to steal the metal payer statue, but was confronted by a 54-year-old male who exited the bedroom. He stabbed the victim on his hand and fled empty-handed,' said RUSA. The suspect was later caught on Russom Street.
