Cape Town rocked by mass murder in sleepy Muizenberg
According to Colonel Andrè Traut, the bodies of the victims – aged between 20 and 37 – were discovered at approximately 05:30 on Mountain Road, each having sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
'The murders are being investigated by detectives attached to the Anti-Gang Unit, who are working tirelessly to determine the events that led to the incident,' said Traut.
While gang-related violence is a suspected motive, it has not been confirmed, and investigators are keeping all lines of enquiry open.
Authorities have urged community members to assist the investigation by providing any information that could lead to arrests.
'Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to use the MySAPS mobile app. Callers may remain anonymous and all details will be treated with the utmost confidentiality,' Traut added.
This latest shooting adds to a growing number of mass killings in the Western Cape, many of which have been linked to gang warfare, drug turf battles, and extortion rackets in recent years.
Overcome Heights, in particular, has long been plagued by violent crime and gang activity, leaving residents in a constant state of fear.
The Anti-Gang Unit remains on the scene, and forensic teams have been combing the area for clues throughout the day.
No arrests have been made at this stage.
Police are calling for calm in the community as investigations continue.

Police warn hiring of undocumented workers may contribute to human trafficking
Pretoria Central police are warning residents they could face arrest if found employing undocumented immigrants. This comes after the station spoke at a recent Women's Day event hosted by the ladies of the African Evangelical Church (AEC) at the Manhattan Hotel, on August 9. Members from around the province gathered at the hotel for the AEC's Gauteng Regional Women's Convention. Station spokesperson, Constable Thabang Nkhumise, spoke on the realities of kidnapping and human trafficking, as it is an ongoing issue affecting the metro and the country at large. Nkhumise gave the ladies a clear picture of what human trafficking and kidnapping is, and further demonstrated the types of trafficking ranging from forced labour, sexual exploitation, debt bondage, domestic servitude, forced marriage, child soldiers, and organ removal. The attendees were also enlightened on forms of kidnapping such as human smuggling and abduction. 'We want to urge you, ladies, to be cautious and not employ foreign nationals who are not documented for cheap labour, as that is considered part of human trafficking,' Nkhumise said. Member of the AEC's Women's Chapter, Babalwa Mabitsela, said that they invited the police because, as women, they needed to be made aware of the happenings regarding their surroundings. 'We know that human trafficking and kidnapping are not confined to the borders of South Africa; it is global, and we need to know what's happening within and even beyond. 'There may be some of us who are involved in it and not even aware that we are. Some of us may be employing domestic workers from neighbouring countries, and those people are undocumented. 'The fact that they are here in the country illegally means that we are also contributing to human trafficking,' Mabitsela said. Mabitsela said the engagement was an eye-opener for her and fellow members, especially when police went over the most recent crime statistics. The women were urged to report any criminal conduct and assured that they can do it anonymously, so as to help the SAPS and protect the most vulnerable groups of people. Contacts for help were handed out for whistle-blowing, such as the Crime Stop line, 08600 10111, or 112 for all cellphone providers, or alternatively, they were urged to use the MySAPS mobile app. ALSO READ: CBD couple arrested with drugs and stolen property Do you have more information about the story? French national arrested in Mali over alleged coup plot
On 14 August 2025, Mali's Security Minister General Daoud Aly Mohammedine confirmed the arrest of French national Yann Vezilier. Vezilier is accused of working 'on behalf of the French intelligence service' to destabilise Mali's military-led government. His image was broadcast on national television alongside 11 alleged conspirators. France has not yet issued an official response to the arrest or the espionage allegations. Two senior Malian generals were also arrested in connection with the alleged coup plot. General Abass Dembele, former governor of Mopti, was dismissed in May after demanding an inquiry into army-led civilian killings. General Nema Sagara, previously praised for her role in the 2012 rebel combat, was also detained. Security sources told AFP that at least 55 soldiers have been arrested so far. The junta claims the plot involved 'foreign states' and that Vezilier mobilised political leaders, civil society actors, and military personnel. General Mohammedine asserts that they 'completely foiled' the alleged conspiracy, which started on 1 August 2025. Political tensions have escalated, with former Prime Ministers Moussa Mara and Choguel Maïga arrested for embezzlement and defamation. Mara has been detained since 1 August. Mali has faced a security crisis since 2012, driven by jihadist violence and criminal gangs. Junta leader Assimi Goïta, who seized power in 2020 and 2021, extended his rule until 2030 despite earlier promises of elections. Mali has severed ties with France and aligned with Russia to combat insurgency, though attacks have intensified. Investigations into 'possible accomplices' are ongoing.
