Woman attempts suicide as loan shark increases interest to 400%
Initially, the interest rate was 50%; however, the loan shark increased it to 400%.
They demanded R100 000 in payback for a R20 000 loan.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the woman's family mentioned that the loan shark changed the interest rate to 400% after seeing that the debt was almost settled.
After the woman resisted paying the high interest, the loan shark threatened to send a group of men to repossess her car if the money was not paid.
Feeling scared, the woman borrowed smaller amounts of money to pay the loan shark as he continued making demands.
The woman called family members and informed them that she intended to jump off a bridge because she had become overwhelmed with debt.
She then requested her family to take care of her child.
RUSA Spokesperson Prem Balram said that they informed the family about the next steps they need to take to get help for the woman.
A suspect was arrested in Verulam, KZN on Tuesday, 12 August 2025, after attacking a family with a knife.
The 36-year-old male suspect entered a property on Aslaam Road in Riyadh with intentions to rob the residence.
Two family members were having tea in their yard when they suddenly noticed the suspect approaching them.
'The 78-year-old woman and her male domestic worker fled into the house, followed by the suspect. The robber produced a knife and attempted to steal the metal payer statue, but was confronted by a 54-year-old male who exited the bedroom. He stabbed the victim on his hand and fled empty-handed,' said RUSA.
The suspect was later caught on Russom Street.

Good news for driving licence cards in South Africa
South Africa's driving licence cards may be getting a new lease on life. According to Mybroadband , this is thanks to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department's (JMPD) launch of a cutting-edge handheld traffic enforcement system. Unveiled by City of Johannesburg public safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku on Friday, 8 August 2025, the device gives officers instant access to driver and vehicle records, even during load-shedding or without network coverage. The setup includes modified smartphones with portable printers, able to verify driver's licence card details, flag stolen vehicles, detect fraudulent cards, and pull traffic violation histories from the Electronic National Traffic Information System (eNatis). Accident reports can also be captured in under five minutes, streamlining roadside operations. From images at the launch, the device in use appears to be Honeywell's ScanPal EDA52, an enterprise-grade mobile computer with secure connectivity and a barcode scanning engine that quickly reads the information on driving licence cards and discs. Professional driving expert Rob Handfield-Jones says the system shows how much more useful and relevant licence cards can become when paired with the right digital tools. 'This proves that physical cards can work hand-in-hand with technology to make law enforcement faster, more accurate, and more reliable,' he said, as per Mybroadband . By combining physical cards with advanced mobile verification, traffic officers can confirm authenticity on the spot, ensuring only valid, legal drivers are on the road. For motorists, it means faster roadside checks, less waiting, and greater confidence that their official licence card remains a powerful, recognised form of identification on the road. Suspected cop killers in gun battle with police
Suspected criminals, it seems, have become more brazen in South Africa wanting to engage in gun battles with police. A shoot-out between police and two suspected criminals in Inanda late last night (12 August) points to this. Police were following up on leads that two suspects, linked to the murder of a police officer, attempted murder, a chain of house robberies and armed robberies, when they (police) came under fire. Colonel Robert Netshiunda, SAPS police spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal said: 'When police arrived at the house [in Maplazini area] they introduced themselves as police officers and instructed the suspects to open the door. 'The suspects responded with gunshots towards police officers from inside the house and police were left with choice but to return fire in self-defence.' In the ensuing gunfight police managed to take control of the situation leading to the fatal shooting of the two suspects. According to Netshiunda the suspects aged 20 and 21 years old sustained fatal wounds. Police officers were not injured during the gun battle. They recovered what might possibly be a stolen firearm from the suspects. The serial number on the gun was filed off. Another brazen gun battle occurred between police and four suspected criminals during a foiled house robbery in Pinetown yesterday (12 August). Police responded to a house robbery in Paradise Valley, Pinetown only to be shot at by the robbers. This is how it played out according to Netshiunda. When police approached the house on Oxford Road, they noticed a suspicious looking VW Polo moving away from the scene. Attempts by police to stop the vehicle were ignored by the driver. 'The driver of the vehicle ignored police instruction's and sped off. A high speed chase ensued and on Underwood Road, the suspects opened fire towards police officers. Police returned fire and a shoot-out ensued,' said Netshiunda. The suspects were wounded during the shoot-out and three were admitted to hospital under police guard. The fourth suspect evaded police and is on the run. The three injured suspects are expected to appear in court when they are 'fit to do so'. In a SAPS Facebook post four days ago, Acting Police Minister, Professor Firoz Cachalia reacted to the dangers police face while undertaking their duty. This, following the deaths of police officers who were ambushed while transporting awaiting trial prisoner, Jabulani Moyo. 'Their [police] sacrifice in the line of duty is a stark reminder of the daily dangers faced by our police officers as they work to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of all South Africans. We owe them — and every officer who puts on the blue uniform — a debt of gratitude that words alone cannot fully express,' said Cachalia. Crowdfunded gift for Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi redirected to SAPS Education Trust
Supporters donated over R44,000 via a BackaBuddy campaign originally intended to 'buy two cows' for Mkhwanazi as a symbol of gratitude. The funds will now be redirected to support the children of fallen officers. Image: Doctor Ngcobo / Independent Newspapers The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that funds raised in a BackaBuddy campaign to 'buy two cows' for KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will be donated to the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET), pending official approval. The crowdfunding campaign was launched by social media users last month as a gesture of appreciation for Mkhwanazi. The campaign exceeded its initial target of R35,000, raising a total of R44,074. It followed Mkhwanazi's explosive allegations of political interference and the shielding of criminals within SAPS. According to Mkhwanazi, senior police officials, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu who is currently on a special leave - interfered in politically sensitive investigations and orchestrated the disbanding of elite anti-corruption units. He accused Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya, deputy national commissioner for crime detection (currently on leave), of colluding with North West information dealer Brown Mogotsi and Mchunu to dismantle the KZN political killings task team. The unit was disbanded in March 2025, effectively suspending 121 active dockets, many of which were linked to politically motivated killings. Mkhwanazi presented WhatsApp messages, SAPS documents and cellphone records to support his claims. Video Player is loading. Following the revelations, President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on special leave and established a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the allegations. Professor Firoz Cachalia has since been appointed as acting Police Minister. The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster confirmed that Mkhwanazi is awaiting formal approval from the office of the National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola to have the donated funds transferred to SAPSET. 'The Office of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, is awaiting approval from the Office of the National Commissioner to allow donated BackaBuddy funds, raised through a donation campaign by prominent X app accounts, to be deposited into the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) account, as per the directive of the Provincial Commissioner,' the JCPS Cluster said in a statement. Once approved, the funds will be used to support the educational needs of children of police officers who died in the line of duty. 'Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi extends his sincere gratitude to everyone for their generous support and contributions,' the statement continued SAPS national spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe confirmed the same. 'Once the approval has been granted, the money will be used to pay for fees, books and uniforms of children whose mothers and fathers died on duty,' Mathe wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The SAPSET, which was established in 2010 has assisted more than 1,000 bereaved children with their education.
