The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that funds raised in a BackaBuddy campaign to 'buy two cows' for KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will be donated to the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET), pending official approval.
The crowdfunding campaign was launched by social media users last month as a gesture of appreciation for Mkhwanazi.
The campaign exceeded its initial target of R35,000, raising a total of R44,074.
It followed Mkhwanazi's explosive allegations of political interference and the shielding of criminals within SAPS.
According to Mkhwanazi, senior police officials, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu who is currently on a special leave - interfered in politically sensitive investigations and orchestrated the disbanding of elite anti-corruption units.
He accused Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya, deputy national commissioner for crime detection (currently on leave), of colluding with North West information dealer Brown Mogotsi and Mchunu to dismantle the KZN political killings task team.
The unit was disbanded in March 2025, effectively suspending 121 active dockets, many of which were linked to politically motivated killings.
Mkhwanazi presented WhatsApp messages, SAPS documents and cellphone records to support his claims.

In response to the allegations, Mchunu argued in a letter dated December 2024 to National Police Commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola that the unit had "outlived its usefulness."
Following the revelations, President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on special leave and established a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the allegations. Professor Firoz Cachalia has since been appointed as acting Police Minister.
The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster confirmed that Mkhwanazi is awaiting formal approval from the office of the National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola to have the donated funds transferred to SAPSET.
'The Office of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, is awaiting approval from the Office of the National Commissioner to allow donated BackaBuddy funds, raised through a donation campaign by prominent X app accounts, to be deposited into the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) account, as per the directive of the Provincial Commissioner,' the JCPS Cluster said in a statement.
Once approved, the funds will be used to support the educational needs of children of police officers who died in the line of duty.
'Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi extends his sincere gratitude to everyone for their generous support and contributions,' the statement continued
SAPS national spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe confirmed the same.
'Once the approval has been granted, the money will be used to pay for fees, books and uniforms of children whose mothers and fathers died on duty,' Mathe wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The SAPSET, which was established in 2010 has assisted more than 1,000 bereaved children with their education.

Life sentence for Northern Natal wife-murderer

A man was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife - and mother of their four children - after he accused her of cheating on him. The man strangled the woman to death during a quarrel when they were alone at the homestead. Image: AI /Ron Between January and March this year 966 women and 314 children were murdered in South Africa, according to recent statistics released by the SAPS, which was another grim reminder of GBV proliferation in the country. It was also staggering to note that in 2023/24 term, 24 942 women were murdered, included in that number was a 29-year-old woman from Jakkalspan, Newcastle, who was strangled to death by husband. The 41-year-old man, who confessed to the July 2024 murder, was sentenced to life behind bars, at the Madadeni Regional Court in Northern KwaZulu-Natal yesterday. The accused believed that his wife had cheated on him. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said the couple lived together as husband and wife since the accused had paid a portion of lobola to her family, and they had four children together. This is because he suspected her of cheating on him. The quarrel escalated, and the accused strangled her to death." Ramkisson-Kara said the man then went to his brother's homestead, and related to him what had transpired. He told his brother that he was going to hand himself over to the police. At the police station, he reported to the officer on duty what he had done. The police took him back to his homestead, where he showed them his wife's body. He was then arrested and charged with murder,' said Ramkisson-Kara. In court, prosecutor Zama Zikalala led the testimony of the accused's brother and the police official in question. 'The postmortem results were also handed in to the court. In aggravation of sentence, Zikalala told the court that the accused had a previous conviction for assaulting the deceased on a prior occasion. The accused was sentenced accordingly, and the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm. 'We remain committed to the fight against the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide,' said Ramkisson-Kara. Ilitha Labantu spokesperson Siyabulela Monakali said it is deeply saddening to witness continued violence perpetrated against women and children across all sectors of society. 'Between January and March 2025 alone, 966 women and 314 children were murdered. In the first quarter of this year, 5,727 people lost their lives to murder and over 24,000 sexual offences were reported and 10,688 reported cases of rape. "These are not mere statistics. They represent shattered lives, broken families, and communities living in trauma. Year after year, the same systemic failures are raised, and year after year, they remain unresolved. South Africa does not lack insight into the root causes and consequences of GBVF; what is missing is decisive leadership and meaningful implementation,' said Monakali. While commemorating Women's Month, Monakali said they remained deeply concerned about the low conviction rate of offenders and the persistently high prevalence of violence against women and children in South Africa. 'We must ask ourselves critical questions: Are we truly winning the fight against GBVF, or are we more concerned with creating the appearance of progress, ticking boxes, and meeting targets on paper while failing survivors in reality? The latter appears to be true.

Gauteng cop and wife charged with kidnapping, extortion of Swiss national

JOHANNESBURG - A Gauteng cop from Tarlton Police Station and his wife have appeared in court for the extortion and kidnapping of a Swiss national diamond dealer. Sergeant John Motladile and his wife, Yvonne, briefly appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates court on Wednesday afternoon. They face charges of kidnapping and extortion relating to a 23-year-old Swiss national who arrived in Joburg last week, to purchase diamonds after seeing an advert on Facebook for the gems. The victim was held against his will at a home in Randfontein last week, where he met with a prospective seller of two uncut diamonds. Motladile interrupted the sale, threatening to arrest the victim should he not pay them more than R200,000. The victim was forced into a marked police van, driven to a popular fast-food outlet and ordered to buy the Motladile and his wife food and drinks. He allegedly paid the Motladile and his wife close to R50,000, but this wasn't enough. Interpol raised the flag after the victim's family contacted authorities for assistance. The victim was released shortly after crime intelligence members made contact with him, scaring Motladile and his wife. The pair were positively identified by the victim on Tuesday and arrested. They will remain in custody before applying for bail next week.
