Durand Cup 2025: Luka Majcen Nets Late As Diamond Harbour Shock Mohammedan SC
Diamond Harbour FC shocked Mohammedan SC 2-1 in the 134th edition of the Durand Cup 2025 campaign. Diamond Harbour FC shocked Mohammedan Sporting Club 2-1 in the 134th edition of the Durand Cup at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) on Monday. Thokchom Adison Singh opened the scoring, while Sairuatkima equalised next, and ultimately Luka Majcen netted the winning goal in added time. It was a frantic start despite the timid atmosphere at the Salt Lake for the Kolkata derby. The Black and White brigade turned over possession after conceding an early corner. In the 3rd minute, Sajal Bag won the ball and set off, finding Ashley Alban Koli as the pair, along with Lalthankima could not turn the ball into the back of the net. There were shouts for a penalty, too, but the referee waved away requests. The game, though, soon descended into an exchange of toothless attacks and missed passes. Diamond Harbour had chances, but Clayton Da Silveira could not find his feet in a crucial moment after receiving a pass from Jobby Justin. In the 27th minute, it was DHFC who had a golden chance to take the early lead. A danced pass from Paul Ramfangzauva found Naro Hari Shrestha, who in turn chested the ball down for Clayton. The Brazilian tried to get the ball back to the Bengal forward, but found Mohammedan's Joseph Lalmuanwna. Unfortunately, it was not cleared completely as the ball fell at the feet of Clayton, whose snapshot whizzed just wide of the upright. Mohammedan were growing in confidence as their opponents kept missing chances. In the 36th minute, Ashley sent Thokchom Adison Singh down the right as the Manipuri winger took a few touches to gun down the goal. He blazed a shot straight at the keeper, but Mirshad Koottappunna just could not get down fast enough low to his left as the ball went through his hands, deflected off his right, and went into the goal. Against the run of play, the Black Panthers took the lead. Diamond Harbour looked immediately for an answer. Melroy Assisi bombed forward for a corner, but his thunderous header went straight into the hands of Subhajit Bhattacharjee. It was Mohammedan who almost had another with the pair of Ashley and Adison combining again. Ashley ran down the left wing, tried to find Adison with an outside of the foot pass as the forward did well to try and direct the ball forward, but his effort bounced just wide. The keeper was completely beaten. At the restart, Kibu Vicuna opted to change things up. In came Luka Majcen and Samuel Lalmuanouia. Diamond Harbour looked immediately more threatening. Luka slipped in a pass to Paul, but his shot was saved by Subhajit under the bar. From the resulting corner, which Samuel took, he found the head of Sairuatkima, who thundered his header into the back of the net for the equaliser in the 51st minute. Luka was the man pulling the strings and asking the players to combine around him as Diamond Harbour grabbed control of the game. But the Mohammedan youngster held on as the scoreline did not change. In the 83rd, Luka tried to get past the last defender but was body-checked. Despite the calls for a penalty, the referee did not move. At the other end, Sajal Bag tried an attempt from distance, but an outstretched hand from Mirshad saw the ball bounce off the bar. There was another mad rush for a winner in the dying minutes of the match. Kibu did not give up hope for a winner, which arrived just short of the 100th minute. A long ball was smartly chested by Samuel into the path of Luka, who got his shot off quickly. It was saved, but the ball somehow managed to get the ball back at his feet. He did not make any mistake on the second time of asking, slotting home to hand Diamond Harbour a historic win. view comments Location : Kolkata, India, India First Published: July 28, 2025, 21:24 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Durand Cup 2025: Mohammedan SC And Diamond Harbour FC In 'Kolkata Derby'
Last Updated: Mohammedan Sporting Club and Diamond Harbour FC kick-off their 134th Edition Durand Cup 2025 campaign with a Group B clash. On paper it is a Kolkata derby as Indian Super League (ISL) side Mohammedan Sporting Club take on I-League 2 champions Diamond Harbour FC in the 134th edition of the Durand Cup at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) on Monday. It should be a mismatch on paper again, a team from the first division of the country against a side climbing the ranks steadily. But the reality is far from it. West Bengal's Diamond Harbour FC was established in 2022 by All India Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and the Member of Parliament of Diamond Harbour, Abhishek Banerjee. Kibu Vicuna, who has previously helmed Mohun Bagan and Kerala Blasters, was appointed as the club's first head coach and still is at the helm. In 2025, DHFC are making their debut in the Durand Cup after winning back-to-back promotions in I-League 3 and 2 to reach I-League. Diamond Harbour have come prepared for their first bow in the oldest tournament in Asia. Statement signings like striker Luka Majcen of Punjab FC alongside players with ISL experience – like Jobby Justin, Melroy Assisi, Wungngayam Muirang, Mirshad Michu and Halicharan Narzary. Despite having established names in their ranks have seen their stature diminish in the last few years, despite winning the I-League and gaining promotion to the ISL. Financial mismanagement, absence of investors and a general lack of funds have seen multiple players leave the side over the summer. FIFA and AIFF transfer bans have rightfully ensued. As per local media reports, last season's club captain Samad Ali Mallick was forced to leave the side in order to earn a living. Mohammedan still have Amarjit Singh Kiyam, Gaurav Bora, Padam Chhetri and Abhishek Halder along with young starlets like Ashley Alban Koli and Makan Winkle Chote but will play the tournament with a blend of reserve squad players, talented Bengal-based footballers, and promising youth prospects. Head coach Mehrajuddin Wadoo, who had taken over the reigns mid-way through last season will hope that the margin of defeat will not mean ousting from the Durand Cup after the first game itself. Goal-difference and margin of victories may come into play in a group that includes last year's runners up and 17 times champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant along with Border Security Force FT. A derby on paper but a contest that may see change of guard in Kolkata football. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Durand Cup 2025: 5-Star East Bengal School South United FC 5-0
Last Updated: Lalchungnunga, Saul Crespo, Bipin Singh, Dimitrios Diamantakos and Naorem Mahesh Singh scored as East Bengal thrashed South United FC 5-0 in the 134th Durand Cup. East Bengal FC thrashed South United FC 5-0 in the 134th Durand Cup at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata on Wednesday. Lalchungnunga, Saul Crespo, Bipin Singh, Dimitrios Diamantakos and Naorem Mahesh Singh scored to hand the Red and Gold brigade a decisive win over the debutants. Naorem Mahesh Singh was the first to check the goalkeeper inside the first two minutes. Come the fifth it was Edmund Lalrindika who saw his effort fly just over the crossbar. East Bengal were clearly the far superior side against a side that is far bellow it on the Indian football ladder. Despite the pressure and control it seemed almost did not want to score. In the 10th minute, David Lalhlansanga had his shot blocked at goalmouth was stopped by Edmund. South United's luck ran out barely two minutes later as Lalchungnunga blasted East Bengal ahead in the 12th. A superb strike from the defender, who crept up from behind to hit it sweetly as the ball bounced off the inside of the crossbar and went into the back of the net. Nishanth N in the SUFC goal made smart saves to keep his side in the game but the pressure from East Bengal remained unrelenting. As the half hour mark neared, the Red and Gold brigade ease up on the pressure. Makakmayum Daniyal worked hard, running the channels but the ball rarely found its way over to him. Talib Nazir stepped up when South United got a free-kick in a promising position but his effort did little to trouble Debjit Majumder in the East Bengal goal. Birthday-boy Saul Crespo could have doubled East Bengal's lead but saw his headed effort from a PV Vishnu cross sailed well over. The goal came soon after. Abdul Salha Sheergojri caught Edmund with a late challenge as the referee pointed to the spot. Saul stepped up to convert the penalty to get East Bengal 2-0 up in the 38th minute. In the 40th, Vishnu could have added another. He did well to keep the ball at his feet with defenders charging him but his shot rattled the upright with the SUFC keeper well-beaten. At the stroke of half-time David could have scored only if he had reacted quicker to an Edmund cut-back. South United kept East Bengal at bay as the deficit stayed at two at the break. After the restart, David could have scored but dragged his effort wide after losing his marker. Oscar Bruzon had cause to worry as Vishnu stumbled to the ground after a challenge early in the second half and looked in pain thereafter. The winger had to be brought off as Nandhakumar came on. Jackson Singh and Dimitrios Diamantakos came on for David and Saul at the hour mark. South United responded by packing their on penalty box. After scrambling to clear a corner, Mahesh saw his shot go just wide in the 63rd minute. New signing Mohamad Rashid, who had been doing well marshalling the defence and acting as the linchpin of the mid-field, stepped up and blasted a shot in the 68th minute. His effort through was again agonisingly wide. In the 72nd, Bruzon opted for more fresh faces as Bipin Singh came on for Edmund as Provat Lakra replaced Anwar Ali. The effect was almost immediate. Lakra with a late challenge on Chris Sherpa in a promising position. South United FC though could not capitalise. East Bengal though aded their third. Two substitutes combining as Diamantakos finding Bipin with a well-timed ball in behind the defence as the Indian winger slipped the last man to curl the ball into the back of the net with his right foot in the 80th minute. South United's frustrations were showing and in the Talib's wild kick at Mahesh forced the referee to award a free kick just outside the penalty area. Diamantakos stepped up and tried his luck as the South United keeper just could not hold as shot rolled over the line for the fourth. With the goals, finally flowing, Mahesh got in on the action as he curled Bipin's corner from the edge of the box into the top corner in the 90th minute. East Bengal won 5.
