Corvette sought in Vacaville multi-vehicle street racing crash impounded by police

(KRON) — A Corvette involved in a May multi-vehicle street racing crash was located and impounded for 30 days, announced the Vacaville Police Department on Friday. The incident happened on May 19 just after 8 p.m. VPD said two drivers were in the area of Peabody Road near Cliffside Drive 'when a black Mustang and a Corvette came barreling down the Cliffside Drive off-ramp from I-80.' 'The driver of the Mustang lost control while trying to make the turn and collided with both vehicles — sending glass and plastic flying and causing significant damage,' said Vacaville police. One victim was hospitalized in the incident. Police said nearby residents rushed to help victims at the scene after the crash. Investigators said that the Mustang and Corvette were racing on eastbound I-80, minutes before the collision. Police said the driver of the Mustang, confirmed as a 22-year-old Vacaville man, was arrested and booked into Solano County Jail on charges related to reckless driving and street racing. His car was also impounded for 30 days. Police did not provide details on the driver of the Corvette. Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to contact the Vacaville Police Department 24/7 dispatch center at (707) 449.5200 (option 1) and ask to be transferred to Officer Huffaker. Terrifying video shows what happens to innocent drivers in California city notorious for illegal street races

Jaw-dropping video captured the moment two reckless sports car racers caused a dramatic collision in a California city - sending an innocent driver to the hospital. On Monday around 8pm, a black Mustang and silver Corvette were illegally racing in Vacaville, where street sprints are on the rise and creating dangerous roads for law-abiding motorists. Two other vehicles were safely stopping at an intersection when they were unexpectedly caught in the crossfire of the dangerous contest. Nerve-wracking footage shared by the Vacaville Police Department shows the careless drivers barreling down an off-ramp and making a wide turn without slowing down. The situation took a turn for the worse when the driver of the Mustang lost control of the distinctively loud vehicle - causing it to slam into the cars simply waiting for the light to turn green. A white Nissan, the first car the Mustang hit, appeared to sustain the heaviest damage, with its back bumper flying off into the road as the car spun 45 degrees and glided backwards. The second vehicle, which appears to be a grey Honda, rolled onto the sidewalk into a grassy area after it was smashed into. As the chaos unfolded, the brazen Corvette driver continued flying down the street without hesitation, video shows. 'The driver of the Mustang lost control while trying to make the turn and collided with both vehicles- sending glass and plastic flying and causing significant damage,' police wrote in a statement. Vacaville Mayor John Carli (pictured) says one of his goals is to 'ensure public safety' in the city of more than 100,000 people Police rushed to the scene and arrested the shameless 22-year-old Mustang driver, who was booked into Solano County Jail on reckless driving and street racing charges. His car was impounded for a month. The alleged culprit is a Vacaville man, but his identity has not been publicly released by police. has reached out to the Vacaville Police Department for more information. Based on the latest police update, authorities are 'still following up on information regarding the Corvette seen in the incident.' One of the innocent drivers dragged into the racers' mess had to go to the hospital for their injuries. It is unclear what the extent of their injuries is or which driver was harmed. 'The driver of the Mustang is very lucky that this collision didn't result in greater injuries or a loss of life,' Lieutenant Chris Lechuga told KCRA. 'That kind of driving has no place on our city streets, in our community or any other, and they will be subject to enforcement and their vehicle impounded if they're found.' The Vacaville Police Department (pictured) has been receiving complaints at least once a week about road racing Police thanked onlookers who witnessed the shocking incident who helped the victims immediately after the crash until first responders arrived. 'Your compassion is just one more reason Vacaville remains a strong, caring place to live,' police wrote. Vacaville residents are growing increasingly concerned, as street racing is reportedly on the rise. Lechuga told KCRA the police department has been receiving complaints at least once a week about road racing. 'We do take these complaints seriously and we will follow up on each and every one,' he said, urging community members to speak up if they see irresponsible driving behavior. Vacaville Mayor John Carli says one of his goals is to 'ensure public safety' in the city of more than 100,000 people, according to his website.

Teen's body found on railroad tracks in 1982, CA officials say. Now man sentenced

The morning of Nov. 16, 1982, a railroad worker riding the rails made a discovery that would rattle a California community for decades. 'Most people who lived in Vacaville will never forget the afternoon' when the Southern Pacific Railroad worker found the body of 14-year-old De Anna Lynn Johnson, Vacaville Police said in a January 2017 Facebook post. 'Her body was found on railroad tracks just a short distance from her home,' the Solano County District Attorney's Office said in a March 20 Facebook post. She 'had been strangled and her body badly bludgeoned,' according to prosecutors. 'At that time, this horrific news travelled quickly and rocked the very fabric of our community.' For decades, her case was cold, until the arrest of Marvin Ray Markle in 2017, prosecutors said. Now, eight years later, the 59-year-old has been sentenced in De Anna's slaying, prosecutors said in a May 16 Facebook post. 'Every parent's worst nightmare is to bury their child,' District Attorney Krishna Abrams said in the post. 'Our hearts go out to De Anna Lynn's parents, who lived that nightmare, and to the rest of her family and friends as they have waited a lifetime for justice.' Initial investigation At the time of her death, De Anna was a ninth grade student at Will C. Wood Junior High School, police said. The night before her body was found, police said she attended a party at a home in Vacaville. Her mother reported her missing when she never made it home, according to police. Kathy Martinez, De Anna's former classmate, told the Vacaville Reporter the killing 'shocked the community. It was so cold.' 'It was frightening,' she told the newspaper. She went on to say that before the slaying, the area felt like 'a very safe community,' however, it 'changed the way we live,' the newspaper reported. During the initial investigation, Markle, who was 17 in 1982, was a suspect, police said. However, police said, 'the case went cold and three decades rolled by as detectives spent thousands of hours attempting to bring her killer to justice.' Arrest Detectives learned in 2004 that Markle was a suspect in a Butte County homicide, and he was arrested in that case in 2013, police said. 'Vacaville detectives attended the Butte County trial and witnessed testimony that helped advance Vacaville's homicide investigation,' police said. Markle was convicted in the Butte County killing and given an 80-year prison sentence in the death of Shirley Ann Pratt, according to police and prosecutors. Then, in January 2017, the Solano County District Attorney's Office issued an arrest warrant for Markle in relation to De Anna's death, police said. 'Today is a day De Anna's family never thought would come …' her mother, Ginger Dimpel, said at a 2017 news conference announcing Markle's arrest. 'We miss her very much, and we rely on happy memories and live on knowing that De Anna believed in God because of rainbows, but we believe in God because of De Anna.' Guilty verdict Markle pleaded not guilty in February 2017, according to The Vacaville Reporter. Several retired police officers who originally investigated De Anna's case in 1982 testified in court, prosecutors said. In March, following a three-week trial, a jury found Markle guilty of first-degree murder, as well as 'the enhancement for Personal Use of a Deadly Weapon,' prosecutors said, McClatchy News previously reported. 'I am so thankful for the dedication of the Vacaville Police Department and members of our office that no matter how much time went by they remained steadfast in their commitment to De Anna Lynn Johnson to solve her horrific case,' District Attorney Abrams said. Markle was given a 26 years to life prison sentence, 'consecutive to the life sentence he is currently serving,' prosecutors said. 'The defendant deprived De Anna Lynn of a life that he has lived,' Abrams said. 'Although nothing will bring De Anna Lynn back, hopefully this conviction provides some sense of closure and justice for our community.' Vacaville is about a 30-mile drive southwest from Sacramento.
