Telangana high court refuses to interfere with GHMC order on closure of beef shops
Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Thursday said it cannot interfere with the GHMC's orders directing the closure of beef shops and slaughterhouses on August 15 and 16 in view of
Independence Day
and Sri Krishna Janmashtami.
The court also refused to grant a stay, noting that the petitioner was not engaged in beef sales. The GHMC commissioner issued the closure orders on August 4.
Vadla Srikanth of Tarnaka challenged them in the high court, alleging a violation of fundamental rights. Justice B Vijaysen Reddy heard the matter. The petitioner's counsel argued that the GHMC lacked the authority to issue such directions, which allegedly violated Articles 14 and 19(1)(g) of the Constitution, and that closing only beef shops amounted to discrimination. Observing that the petitioner was a consumer and not a trader, the court suggested filing a Public Interest Litigation in such matters. The case was adjourned to August 28.
