Two-day national seminar on Agama begins at NSU

The National Sanskrit University's (NSU) two-day seminar on 'Agama' organised by the Department of Agama commenced on a grand scale here on Monday, with participation of scholars from across the country. Y. Arunasundaram, Principal of Mylapore Sanskrit College, Chennai, who attended as the chief guest, called upon the scholars to take up 'authentic' research on the principles of Agama, the doctrine of temple worship. 'While Vedas are considered divine revelations (not of human origin), the Agamas are also divine scriptures bestowed upon us. The Agama gives the divine a particular form in temples and defines the procedure for consecration of idols,' he said at the conference discussing 'Chaturagamas' viz., 'Vaikhanasa', 'Pancharatra', 'Shaiva' and 'Tantrasara'. In his presidential address, NSU Vice-Chancellor G.S.R. Krishnamurthi recalled that the founding objectives of the university were to preserve scriptures like the Agama through publications, propagate them through conferences and workshops. 'We are now preparing an Agama exhibition hall,' he announced. TTD Dharmagiri Vedapatashala (Tirumala) Principal Kuppa Siva Subrahmanya Avadhani called the Agamas as the 'application part' of Vedas, which he termed as the root of Dharma. 'The application includes cover creation, dissolution, deity worship, meditation, yoga and other sacred rituals,' he said, adding that the essence of all Agamas lay in attaining the divine vision, with the extended activities such as sacrifices, penances and rituals. Dean Rajanikant Shukla and Agama head Vedantam Vishnu Bhattacharya also took part.
