Maryvale Primary School reads for World Read-A-Thon Day

On May 16, Maryvale Primary School learners sat comfortably on blankets, chairs, and couches in their quad garden, which was transformed into an outdoor-library Jungle Book haven to celebrate World Read-A-Thon day. Read more: Another Atholl parkrun for the books Classes coupled up, older grades buddying the younger ones, in half-hour sessions, to enjoy a morning of books using independent, shared, and paired reading strategies. Also read: Local charity raises funds by selling books to build toilets in informal settlements 'Books are treasures, and reading is the key to learning and future success. Let's keep this alive by reading everyday, for pleasure or research, to build a nation of critical thinkers,' said Thabile Manyathi, primary school principal. Grade 2 teacher Valeria Ciccone added: 'Reading not only builds vocabulary, comprehension, and imagination; it opens doors to new ideas, cultures, and perspectives.' She added that it was heartwarming to see children so engaged and excited about books. The success of this event, evident in the smiling faces, planted the seed for future read-a-thons, an initiative the school can't wait to grow.
