RealMe's Color-Changing Chameleon Phone Takes A Bath At MWC 2025
Mobile World Congress 2025 has been full of weird and wacky phones" target="_blank -- some available to buy" target="_blank and some not. The RealMe 14 Pro is in the former category, and has been available since the end of last year, but the Barcelona phone show was the first time we'd witnessed the phone perform its crowd-pleasing party trick in person. What makes the RealMe 14 Pro special is that the backside of the phone can change color when exposed to the cold thanks to thermochromic pigments in the casing which react to temperature fluctuations. The effect is that vivid blue marbling appears across the pearlescent back when the phone reaches less than 16 degrees Celsius. To demonstrate this at MWC, the phone was suspended in a tank, which filled up with cold water at the click of a button. As the phone was immersed, blue lines started to swirl across the cream casing. It was a striking effect that gave the phone a unique, delicate and eye-catching look. After the water drained away and the phone warmed up again, the blue marbling started to fade away, which almost felt like a shame as aesthetically the phone looked more appealing when cold. The color changing is clearly something of a novelty, but I always appreciate it when phone makers attempt to inject an element of fun into their devices. This chameleon of a phone was co-designed with Scandinavian design studio Valeur Designers, best known for collaborating with aesthetically audacious audio brand Bang & Olufsen. There's no US pricing and availability listed for the RealMe 14 Pro, but the mid-range device is available in Asian markets for around $265.
