No free repair: Lawyer sues e-scooter firm, wins Rs 25,000 in damages
Bengaluru: After being denied free repairs during the warranty period and forced to pay to retrieve his vehicle, a city-based customer has won a relief package through the Bengaluru Urban district consumer disputes redressal commission. The commission has pulled up Ola Electric Technologies Pvt Ltd and ordered compensation, including litigation costs. The story began on June 10, 2024, when a Bengaluru lawyer purchased an Ola S1X electric scooter. The vehicle was delivered on June 14, 2024, with a three-year warranty, covering all parts except consumables such as oil, paint, and brakes. However, within a year of use, the rear wheel rim was found bent, the tyre leaked air, and the front left brake stopped functioning — problems the resident alleged were due to poor material quality. On March 13, 2025, the buyer approached the Ola service centre to have the defects fixed under warranty. A technician named Santosh promised it would be resolved within a day. But on March 14, the technician informed the buyer that the scooter was handed over to a mechanic outside the Ola network and asked him to transfer money to a personal bank account for repairs. The buyer was shocked when told that the scooter wouldn't be returned unless he paid. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Top 25 Most Beautiful Women In The World Articles Vally Undo You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Stunned by the demand, the buyer wrote to Ola's customer service, attaching pictures and a detailed complaint. But there was no response. When he visited the service centre on March 15, he found the scooter parked with its rear wheel removed. Even after more follow-up emails on March 17, Ola didn't act. With no way around, the complainant on March 18 transferred Rs 1,400 to a mobile number provided by the technician and was later made to pay Rs 235 more as labour charges — a total of Rs 1,635 — just to retrieve the scooter. WhatsApp messages and photos submitted as evidence showed the repairs were carried out by an unauthorised third-party mechanic. The buyer argued this was a violation of Ola's warranty clause that repairs done by non-Ola-certified personnel are not permitted. He later received a bill on WhatsApp, which showed the scooter was repaired outside the Ola service network. The lawyer stated in his affidavit that he paid under protest to retrieve his vehicle and sent a legal notice to Ola on March 20, 2025, but in vain. Frustrated, the lawyer filed a consumer complaint on April 7, 2025, alleging service deficiency. The company did not appear before the commission despite receiving notice, nor did it file any written version of its defence. After going through all the proof, the commission said Ola failed to provide free repair during the warranty period, made illegal monetary demands, and caused mental, emotional, and financial distress. The commission noted: "Even though the complainant is a lawyer and knows his rights, he was compelled to pay for repairs unlawfully. If this is the treatment given to a legal professional, what would be the fate of a common consumer?" The commission has directed Ola to immediately discontinue such unfair trade practices. The commission on July 15 ordered the company to refund Rs 1,635 with 6% annual interest from the date of payment, apart from paying Rs 20,000 for mental harassment and Rs 5,000 as litigation costs.

Citing deadline, tourism department pushes Roerich eco-tourism plan in Karnataka
Bengaluru: Citing the city's lack of nature-based recreational spaces and a looming central funding deadline, the tourism department has made a strong pitch to implement a Rs 99.2-crore eco-tourism and cultural hub at Roerich and Devika Rani estate, located off Kanakapura Road and bordering Bannerughatta forest range. At a high-level review meeting chaired by forest minister Eshwar Khandre Thursday, a day before the matter came up at the high court, tourism officials stressed that if the project isn't executed by March 2026, the state stands to lose Rs 65 crore in central funds earmarked for the initiative. The govt has granted its in-principle approval for the project, which, if implemented, will see a mix of amenities, including cultural centres, walking trails, eco-lodges, and public infrastructure. Officials argued Bengaluru, despite its size and population, lacks a large-scale green recreational zone anchored in ecological and cultural heritage. The Roerich estate, they said, could fill that gap. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Tourism officials also claimed the project doesn't require separate forest clearance under the Forest Conservation Act, 1980, and assured the minister that all construction and development would be compliant with the Forest and Wildlife Acts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Top 25 Most Beautiful Women In The World Articles Vally Undo "We've planned eco-sensitive designs and intend to follow stringent mitigation measures. With the estate's legacy and landscape, this could become a model site for sustainable cultural tourism," a senior official said. However, forest department officials at the same meeting raised red flags over the ecological sensitivity of the area. The 468-acre estate lies within an elephant corridor that connects Bannerughatta and Savanadurga forest ranges. Karnataka's only elephant overpass, designed to help these animals migrate across human-dominated landscapes, is located nearby. Forest officials shared camera trap images showing regular movement of elephants, leopards and other scheduled mammals in the region. "The estate is part of a fragile corridor. Construction here will fragment wildlife movement, especially of large mammals," a forest official present at the meeting said. However, senior forest officials did not formally object to the tourism department's plan during the review meeting, according to multiple sources. In fact, earlier on Tuesday, the principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) had recommended the project to the Union environment ministry. "There are some technical issues encountered in the Parivesh portal while uploading the working and management plans. Hence, the management plan of the tourism department is submitted with a request to forward it to the MoEF&CC regional office for further approval," the PCCF letter read. Tourism officials at the meeting are said to have acknowledged the presence of wildlife, but maintained that their design includes mitigation measures and does not violate forest laws.

Over 67,000 cases of deodorants sold at Walmart, Amazon recalled due to 'cGMP deviations'. What is it?
Over 67,000 cases of three types of Power Stick deodorant sold at Walmart, Amazon and Dollar Tree have been recalled due to 'cGMP deviations". This means the product did not meet manufacturing regulations by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). On Thursday, the US Food and Drug Administration announced a nationwide recall of some Power Stick deodorants , manufactured by A.P. Deauville . The agency's website notes that CGMP stands for 'Current Good Manufacturing Practice' and these regulations 'make sure that a product is safe for use, and that it has the ingredients and strength it claims to have.' Live Events The antiperspirants were distributed nationwide and sold at Walmart, Amazon and Dollar Tree. A.P. Deauville also makes shampoo, conditioner, lotion, body wash and facial wipes. What is CGMP? For the recall, the FDA enforcement reported cGMP deviations , which listed failures in adhering to current good manufacturing practices as the primary reason. According to FDA, the main regulatory standard for ensuring pharmaceutical quality is the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for human pharmaceuticals. ALSO READ: Barron Trump 'humiliated' at NYU? Professor, peers make shocking statement about US President's son "CGMP refers to the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations enforced by the FDA. CGMP provides for systems that assure proper design, monitoring, and control of manufacturing processes and facilities. Adherence to the CGMP regulations assures the identity, strength, quality, and purity of drug products by requiring that manufacturers of medications adequately control manufacturing operations. This includes establishing strong quality management systems, obtaining appropriate quality raw materials, establishing robust operating procedures, detecting and investigating product quality deviations, and maintaining reliable testing laboratories. This formal system of controls at a pharmaceutical company, if adequately put into practice, helps to prevent instances of contamination, mix-ups, deviations, failures, and errors. This assures that drug products meet their quality standards," FDA says. Why is CGMP so important? A consumer usually cannot detect (through smell, touch, or sight) that a drug product is safe or if it will work. While CGMP requires testing, testing alone is not adequate to ensure quality, the FDA says. In most instances testing is done on a small sample of a batch (for example, a drug manufacturer may test 100 tablets from a batch that contains 2 million tablets), so that most of the batch can be used for patients rather than destroyed by testing. ALSO READ: Shooting in Washington's Renton leaves 'multiple victims', police launch investigation Therefore, it is important that drugs are manufactured under conditions and practices required by the CGMP regulations to assure that quality is built into the design and manufacturing process at every step. However, it is important to note that no harmful substance was found in those products. "If a company is not complying with CGMP regulations, any drug it makes is considered 'adulterated' under the law. This kind of adulteration means that the drug was not manufactured under conditions that comply with CGMP. It does not mean that there is necessarily something wrong with the drug," according to FDA.
