Arne Slot chooses former Arsenal and Barcelona star as new Liverpool assistant
Arne Slot is set to bring in former Arsenal, Barcelona and Rangers defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst as his new assistant at Liverpool. John Heitinga had been in the role as the Reds won the Premier League title last season but he has left to take charge of Ajax. A number of names have been linked with replacing Heitinga, including Liverpool cult hero Dirk Kuyt, but it appears Slot's search is at an end. The Times report that Van Bronckhorst is close to being appointed at Anfield where he will join Slot's backroom staff. It appears something of a coup for Liverpool to get the 50-year-old in as a coach as Van Bronckhorst has already held some high profile jobs as a manager. After two spells there as a player he started his managerial career with Feyenoord in 2015 and won the Eredivisie in 2017. Van Bronckhorst spent four years in charge of the Dutch side, but his time with clubs since then has been much shorter. A short stint in China with Guangzhou R&F was followed by a year with Rangers and then just 20 games in charge of Besiktas in 2024. The versatile defender and midfielder had a brilliant playing career, winning 106 caps for Netherlands. He won the Premier League with Arsenal, two La Liga titles with Barcelona and two Scottish Premier League titles with Rangers. The two will now unite on Merseyside, with the newcomer working alongside Sipke Hulshoff and Aaron Briggs under Slot's management. Despite enjoying an incredible season last time around as they won a second Premier League title, Liverpool are going through a summer of quite significant change. More Trending As well as in the coaching department there will be notable changes on field as well, with Jeremie Frimpong already arriving to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold. Florian Wirtz is expected to arrive next in a club record deal with Bayer Leverkusen, while the Reds are being linked with a string of strikers as they look to get rid of Darwin Nunez this summer. Anfield boss Arne Slot is preparing to reshuffle his coaching staff ahead of their Premier League title defence next season. And it's being reported that ex-Gers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst will replace him. The Times say van Bronckhorst is poised to become Slot's new assistant coach. Van Bronckhorst guided the Ibrox side to the Europa League final and a Scottish Cup victory in 2022. But he was sacked a few months later after a string of poor results in the Champions League and in the Scottish Premiership. The Dutchman remained out of work for a year-and-a-half before stepping back into the dugout with Turkish giants Besiktas last year. But he lasted just 20 games in charge, winning only ten and drawing four, losing six. The former Rangers, Arsenal and Barcelona star was replaced by Manchester United icon Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as at the Istanbul club. Van Bronckhorst remains a legend at Feyenoord, having played there in two spells and winning the Eredivisie as a manager. Slot and van Bronckhorst's stints in the dugout at Feyenoord led to similar successes. Moment Ally McCoist interrupts live radio to congratulate his 'wee pal' on signing for Rangers Van Bronckhorst won the league and two Dutch Cups over 176 games, with a win rate of 61 percent. Slot won the league once and the Dutch Cup once and amassed a win percentage of 65 percent, prior to his move to Liverpool. Van Bronckhorst, 50, was previously linked with a return to Feyenoord but they appointed Robin van Persie instead. He also turned down an approach from SC Heerenveen back in March. Liverpool are also on the verge of completing a blockbuster move for Florian Wirtz. The German superstar could be followed in the door at Anfield by PSG ace Bradley Barcola and Newcastle United talisman Alexander Isak in what would be a wild £300m summer spending spree. The Reds have already forked out £29.5m on Wirtz's Leverkusen team-mate, former Celtic defender Jeremie Frimpong. Bournemouth's 21-year-old left-back Milos Kerkez is also being eyed as a potential replacement for Scotland hero Andy Robertson. 2 Giovanni van Bronckhorst won the Scottish Cup with Rangers Credit: Getty Images - Getty Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Slot closes in on deal to appoint former Arsenal star as his Liverpool assistant
Liverpool are working hard to add new faces to their squad with Arne Slot also hopng to recruit a new coach following the departure Johnny Heitinga earlier this season Liverpool are set to appoint Giovanni van Bronckhorst as assistant boss. Arne Slot is looking to add another Dutchman to his coaching team to replace Johnny Heitinga, who departed to take the top job at Ajax. Van Bronckhorst has been out of work since he was sacked by Besiktas in November. The Dutch coach has previously managed Feyenoord - like Slot - as well as Rangers. But now he will step back into a role as an assistant to take over from Heitinga if a deal gets completed. Heitinga was a popular figure among the Liverpool players after just a year at the club for the former Everton defender. But he could not turn down the chance to take charge of Ajax, where he has previously been interim boss. Van Bronckhorst had a distinguished career as a player having played with Rangers, Arsenal, Barcelona and Feyenoord at either end of his playing time. Speaking out earlier this year, Van Bronckhorst shared his disgruntlement about how his spell at Ibrox ended. He said: "I'm frustrated because I had to leave because I am a fighter, I was a fighter as a player and also as a coach. "I think I have done everything in my power to manage the club. If you have to say goodbye to a club, and a club I mean players, the fans to leave, that is not a nice feeling to leave something you love. "But you have to live with it, you have to deal with it and you have to move on because life goes on. I am now in a very positive place where I enjoy life, I enjoy my family and enjoy watching really good games. We all move on." Van Bronckhorst added: "It's something you don't want as a coach. I wish I was still there coaching this team but I also know how it works in football and I am not deciding the future of the club. It is not ideal for a coach and I think also not ideal for a club." Following his time with Rangers, Van Bronckhorst was appointed by Turkish giants Besiktas but lasted just five months in Istanbul. He won exactly half of the 20 matches he oversaw - and has not returned to the dugout since. Away from the dugout, Liverpool are also hard at work adding to their playing staff. Jeremie Frimpong and Armin Pecsi have already been signed and the Reds are still chasing deals for Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz. Ex-Rangers boss 'close' to surprise new job with EPL giants
The Dutchman spent just under a year in charge at Ibrox, leading the club he turned out for as a player to the 2022 Europa League final. Read more: Liverpool are now 'close' to appointing Van Bronckhorst to their backroom staff, claims The Athletic. Van Bronckhorst spent a brief spell in charge of Besiktas after leaving Rangers before taking up a role on UEFA's Executive Committee. He now appears set to move to Liverpool as the club looks to build on a title-winning campaign. Speaking in April of this year, Van Bronckhorst was asked whether he'd like to become the permanent manager of Rangers once again: "No," he said live on TNT Sports. "For me, that book is closed. "Maybe as a fan, but no." Rangers recently appointed Russell Martin as the club's new head coach following a change of ownership this summer. He officially got down to business earlier this week ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
