Vikings Pro Bowler Injury Concerns Emerge as Season Nears
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Just two weeks away from their season opener against the Chicago Bears, the Minnesota Vikings have some concerns facing one of the NFL's top outside linebackers in Andrew Van Ginkel. After earning the first Pro Bowl of his career last season, Van Ginkel landed a one-year, $23 million extension that doubled his pay from the past season. It was money well spent for Minnesota, which saw the former Miami Dolphins starter tally a career-high 11.5 sacks, 18 tackles for loss and two pick-sixes last season. However, that investment in Van Ginkel could already be hit by diminishing returns with the latest development coming out of training camp. While safety Harrison Smith missed last week, head coach Kevin O'Connell addressed that his absence was due to illness. There's been no further information on Van Ginkel yet. "He's literally learning both of our positions. So, literally he can play at any moment and come in and there's no drop-off at all," Greenard said of Turner at the beginning of training camp. "I think that his humbleness is the biggest part about him, too." For more on the Minnesota Vikings and general NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Vikings' Dallas Turner dubbed 'must-watch' during Vikings training camp
EDGE defender Dallas Turner didn't have the type of rookie season most expected when the Minnesota Vikings traded up to select him with the 17th pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. He registered three snaps on 310 defensive snaps, playing a rotational role most of the season. That wasn't all Turner's fault. Starters Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel earned Pro Bowl nods after combining for 23.5 sacks. Turner will be counted on to produce in 2025, but will that come at the expense of pulling Greenard and Van Ginkel off the field? How the Vikings line Turner up is one of the top priorities for Alec Lewis to watch for this training camp, he wrote in The Athletic. Turner needs more playing time for multiple reasons. It's not just that the Vikings traded a boatload of draft capital to acquire him in 2024; it's also that Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard aren't likely to be able to sustain the workload they contributed last year. Turner's explosiveness should provide Flores a new card to pull to confound quarterbacks. Physically, Turner can do just about everything. Flores' willingness to move him around the field in training camp and beyond will be telling. Greenard and Van Ginkel terrorized quarterbacks in 2024, but the Vikings had to manufacture ways to get the rest of the defense involved. Turner could provide a needed spark off the EDGE if he substitutes in for one of them. However, being aligned over guards or centers and blitzing, a la Micah Parsons, could add a new element to the defense without sacrificing Greenard and Van Ginkel. The Vikings will give Turner every opportunity to play in 2025 by lining him up at various positions. Let's see if he's up to the task.

Former Wisconsin football star, 2025 Pro Bowler makes NFL top 100 ranking
Former Wisconsin football star and current Minnesota Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel earned the No. 88 spot in the NFL's top 100 ranking ahead of the 2025 season. For the first time in his six-year career, Van Ginkel pocketed a position on the heralded hierarchy. He is the first former Badger to crack the 100-man list and the second linebacker listed, following Tampa Bay Buccaneers' star Lavonte David (No. 96). Months removed from inking a one-year, $23 million contract extension with the Vikings, Van Ginkel finds himself amongst league royalty after a 79-tackle, 11 1/2-sack output in his most prolific year in the NFL to date. In addition to those numbers, Van Ginkel accumulated 18 tackles for loss, 19 quarterback hits, six pass deflections, one forced fumble and two interceptions -- both of which he returned for touchdowns. The seasonal performance also earned him his first Pro Bowl bid, a spot on the AP Second-Team All-Pro team and a No. 7 finish in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Prior to joining Kevin O'Connell's squad in Minnesota, the Iowa native spent the first five years of his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins. While he didn't necessarily shine like he did with the Vikings, he averaged 50 tackles, 6.2 for loss, 9.5 quarterback hits and 3.4 sacks per season as a valuable member of the defensive unit. His draft position -- No. 151 overall in the fifth round in 2019 -- suggested that he may have reached his ceiling with Miami, but he morphed that notion into a falsity when he arrived at U.S. Bank Stadium. "He's one of the most versatile players that we have in this league," former offensive tackle Terron Armstead said of Van Ginkel in his highlight reel for NFL Films. "You don't understand how fast he a relentless player. He plays with his hair on fire, and he has a lot of football IQ is really what separates ability to read plays before the snap. He looks at formations. That's why he's able to jump screen passes, because he knows it's coming." Van Ginkel played for two seasons for the Badgers from 2017-18 after one year at the Football Championship Subdivision (South Dakota) level and one year in JUCO (Iowa Western). With UW, he was responsible for 99 tackles, 20 for loss, 12 sacks, two interceptions, five pass deflections and four forced fumbles over those two seasons. He has since emerged as one of the most valuable linebackers in professional football. Minnesota Vikings pass rush duo named among the best in the NFL
Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel highlighted the Minnesota Vikings' 2024 free agent signings and exceeded expectations. Both players made the Pro Bowl, combining for 23.5 sacks of the Vikings' 48 sacks. Matt Holder of Bleacher Report expects more of the same in 2025, ranking the pass-rushing duo as the fourth-best in the NFL. ....Minnesota took a chance on both players during free agency and became the only team to have two players finish in the top eight for sacks. Greenard was half a sack short of tying a career high, getting to the quarterback 12 times, while Van Ginkel recorded his first double-digit sack campaign and nearly doubled his previous personal best (six) with 11.5. On top of that, the former Texan finished third among edge-rushers with 80 total pressures, and the former Dolphin was 26th with 49, according to Pro Football Focus. It will be interesting to see how the duo is used in 2025. Van Ginkel's playing time likely won't decrease, but Brian Flores praised second-year EDGE defender Dallas Turner during OTAs. If Turner has mastered the playbook, he will be asked to play more than the 310 defensive snaps he did as a rookie. Still, Van Ginkel and Greenard both showed they deserved to be on the field as much as possible in 2024. If they can replicate their 2025 performances, the Vikings will once again have one of the best defenses in the league.
