Giant Grizzly Taken in Alaska Is a New World Record, Confirms Boone & Crockett
The Boone and Crockett Club has confirmed a new record grizzly bear, according to a social media post shared by the club Sunday. The giant boar was taken by a traveling hunter in Alaska in 2024, and it scored 27 9/16 inches, making it the largest hunter-killed grizzly in the B&C records book. Brian Van Lanen, of Wisconsin, killed the record-setting griz on a guided hunt near Norton Sound, Alaska, last fall, according to B&C. Hunting with guide Lance Kronberger, Van Lanen had both a moose tag and a grizzly bear tag when they set out in September, and they were holding out for the right bull one evening when they spotted the huge grizzly in an alder patch near a river. They came back the next morning to find the bear fighting a similar sized but younger boar over a fishing hole. The younger boar was about to chase their target bear away when Van Lanen fired his .338 Lapua, rolling the bear. After Van Lanen sealed the deal with a few follow-up shots, Kronberger rushed down to recover the bear. Minutes later, when Van Lanen got there, Kronberger told him something that Van Lanen said he will never forget: 'You have no idea what you've just killed.' Although the two had been hunting together for years, this animal was different. Lifting its massive head out of the river, Van Lanen and Kronberger knew they'd taken one of the biggest and oldest grizzlies ever harvested in North America. 'The gigantic boar was covered in scar tissue,' B&C said in a news release announcing the new grizzly record. 'The old boar's bottom lip was split entirely in half, and its teeth were worn to nubs. [The guide] estimated the bear to be 20-25 years old.' A B&C scorer taped the skull months later, after the mandatory 60-day drying period, and measured an official score of 27 9/16 — a measurement that was recently confirmed by a special judge's panel. With that official score, Van Lanen's record-book bear was also just a fraction of an inch shy of the B&C world-record grizzly bear skull, which was picked up by a hunter in Alaska in 1976 and measured 27 13/16 inches. 'As for that moose tag,' B&C says, 'Brian connected with a great bull just a couple of days later. A 73-inch wide beast that also made the Boone and Crockett record books.'

Report: OL Cole Van Lanen signs restricted free agent tender to stay with Jaguars
Report: OL Cole Van Lanen signs restricted free agent tender to stay with Jaguars OL Cole Van Lanen has reportedly signed his restricted free agent tender to stay with the Jaguars for the 2025 season. Offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen has reportedly signed his restricted free agent tender to stay with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 2025 season, according to Aaron Wilson. A restricted free agent is a player with three accrued seasons in the NFL. The Jaguars already placed an original round tender on Van Lanen, but he still had the ability to meet and negotiate with other teams. By receiving the original round tender, had another team offered Van Lanen a contract, the Jaguars would have had the opportunity to match the deal to keep Van Lanen. However, had the Jaguars chosen not to match this hypothetical offer, the new team would have had to give Jacksonville a sixth-round pick for Van Lanen, since that was the round Green Bay drafted him in. With that said, all of that is a moot point. It was reported that Van Lanen met with Seattle, but no other reports were out there that he received a contract offer from the Seahawks or any team. Van Lanen's restricted free agent deal is for one year and is worth $3.26 million, according to Over the Cap. This is a predetermined contract amount based on Van Lanen receiving an original round tender. Van Lanen appeared in six games on offense last season, which included three starts. He played both the right and left tackle spots. Van Lanen gives the Jaguars needed depth at tackle and could be the team's swing tackle off the bench in 2025. The Jaguars signed free agent tackles Chuma Edoga and Fred Johnson this offseason as well.

Seattle Seahawks host former Wisconsin Badgers offensive lineman on free-agent visit
Seattle Seahawks host former Wisconsin Badgers offensive lineman on free-agent visit The Seattle Seahawks hosted former Wisconsin offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen on a free-agent visit earlier this week. After spending the last three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Van Lanen is a restricted free agent. The Jaguars placed a 6th-round tender on him on March 8, meaning that the team will get the chance to match any offer he receives. If the Jaguars elect not to match, the offering team would have to send them back a 6th-round pick. Van Lanen will enter his fifth NFL season in 2025. He originally joined the league as a 6th-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2021. He spent his rookie season primarily on the Packers' practice squad before being traded to the Jaguars the following August. The former Badger has played in 34 games over three years in Jacksonville, starting three. His role grew significantly from 2023 to 2024, as his offensive snaps increased from just 53 (9% of the team's overall offensive snaps) to 252 (46%). Van Lanen played at Wisconsin from 2016-20. He won the starting left tackle job in 2019, helping to block for All-American running back Jonathan Taylor and a highly successful Wisconsin offense. Overall, the Green Bay, Wisconsin, native appeared in 45 games with the Badgers, with 19 starts at left tackle. The former 6th-round pick has gained significant traction at the NFL level. Even if the Seahawks offer Van Lanen a contract, Jacksonville may be inclined to keep him on the roster. However, the Jaguars' offseason to date has been headlined by the team reshaping its offensive line room with the free-agent signings of OT Fred Johnson, OG Chuma Edoga, C Robert Hainsey and OG Patrick Mekari. Hainsey and Mekari should be write-in starters at center and right guard, respectively, with Johnson and Edoga each filling depth roles. Those additions add competition for Van Lanen's role backing up both guard and tackle positions, and may be a reason the Jaguars elect not to match. Jaguars tender restricted free agent OL ahead of free agency
Jaguars tender restricted free agent OL ahead of free agency The Jacksonville Jaguars have tendered restricted free agent OL Cole Van Lanen ahead of free agency. The Jacksonville Jaguars will be placing an original round tender on restricted free agent offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen, according to Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap. A restricted free agent is a player with three accrued seasons in the NFL. Van Lanen still has the ability to negotiate with other teams. However, the wrinkle here is that with the Jaguars using an original round tender on him, if Van Lanen gets a contract offer from another team, the Jaguars have the opportunity to match and keep him or they can let him sign with that new team, but in return, they get a sixth round pick, since that was the round Van Lanen was drafted in. If Van Lanen stays with the Jaguars this season, his contract will be for one season, and the original round tender comes with a pre-determined salary amount of $3.26 million. The 2024 season was Van Lanen's third with the Jaguars. He was originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 2021 out of Wisconsin and was traded to Jacksonville in 2022. Van Lanen appeared in six games on offense last season, which included three starts. He played both the right and left tackle spots. Van Lanen gives the Jaguars needed depth at tackle and could be the team's swing tackle off the bench in 2025. Linebacker Joe Giles-Harris and wide receiver Tim Jones are restricted free agents as well.

Who are Jaguars' 2025 restricted free agents?
We know who the Jacksonville Jaguars big name unrestricted free agents are this offseason, but who are their restricted free agents and what's the difference between the two? The Jaguars' restricted free agents this offseason are linebacker Joe Giles-Harris, wide receiver Tim Jones, and offensive tackle Cole Van Lanen, according to Over the Cap (OTC). As we all know, unrestricted free agents are able to negotiate freely with other teams and can sign wherever they please. But when it comes to restricted free agents, that isn't quite the case. A restricted free agent (RFA) is a player with three accrued years of NFL experience. The RFA's current team has the option of placing one of three tenders on that player: a first round tender, a second round tender, or a right of first refusal tender. If no tender is placed on an RFA, they then become an unrestricted free agent. However, if one of those tenders is placed on the RFA, they can then negotiate with other teams, but there is a caveat. If the tendered RFA receives an offer from another organization, the current team has the opportunity to match the contract. If they do, then the RFA returns to the original team. But if they don't whatever tender was placed on the RFA, the original team will get as compensation from the new team. For example, if another team is willing to sign away a player with a first round tender, the new team would have to give the original team a first round draft pick in return. If the RFA receives a tender but does not get an offer from another team, they will then re-sign with the original team and receive a one-year contract at a predetermined amount set by the NFLPA based on which tender was utilized. Now, when it comes to Van Lanen, Giles-Harris, and Jones, I would guess that we aren't going to see any of them receive a tender. The reason for that is because the projected contract costs for each tender is more than what each player would like receive on the open market. The first-round tender this offseason, per OTC, is $7.27 million. A second-round tender is worth $5.21 million and the Right of First Refusal tender is $3.18 million. With that said, I would anticipate that the Jaguars do want to bring each player back on their 90-man roster. To varying degrees, all three players did have roles on this Jaguars team last season. Giles-Harris and Jones were special teams contributors while Van Lanen played nearly 300 offensive snaps.
