South Africa under-19 batter Jorich Van Schalkwyk records massive milestone with double ton in men's youth ODI
18-year-old South African batter, Jorich Van Schalkwyk, has scripted history by becoming the first batter to smash a double-ton in men's youth ODIs. read more South Africa's young batting sensation, Jorich Van Schalkwyk, has scripted history by becoming the first batter to smash a double-ton in men's Youth ODIs. Van Schalkwyk racked up 215 runs off 153 balls against Zimbabwe's U-19 team in the tri-series opener in Harare on Friday. The 18-year-old struck 18 fours and six sixes to help South Africa reach a monumental total of 385 in the first innings. The explosive innings took him past Hasitha Boyagoda, who registered 191 runs for Sri Lanka's Under-19 team in 2018. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Jorich Van Schalkwyk makes history for South Africa In reply, Zimbabwe lost its way early on and could not recover, eventually bundling out at a meagre score of 107. As a result, South Africa U-19 won the match by a significant margin of 278 runs. The match result has also modified history books, as this is the biggest run-margin victory in Youth ODIs. It bettered the previous best set by Australia when they defeated Namibia by 209 runs in 2012. This is not the first time Van Schalkwyk has broken a record while playing for the South Africa Under-19 team. In his previous outing, he made history by scoring an unbeaten 164 against Bangladesh Under-19, breaking the previous record for the highest individual score in South Africa Under-19 cricket. On Friday, he spent 212 minutes in the middle, which equalled 46.2 overs during his record performance. While it turned out to be a forgetful day for Zimbabwe, bowler Tatenda Chimugoro proved to be a knight in shining armour for Zim U-19. He snared six dismissals in the eight-over spell and gave away 62 runs. Van Schalkwyk was adjudged the player of the match for his brilliant performance with the bat. Coincidentally, Van Schalkwyk's achievement has come in the wake of India's Vaibhav Suryavanshi expressing the desire to reach the 200-run mark in youth cricket. Suryavanshi came close to breaching the mark recently but fell short. However, the SA opener did not miss out and became the first player to cross the eminent figure.
