Bhimavaram: West Godavari district collector Chadalawada Nagarani said that in addition to planting trees to improve greenery, efforts are being made to control plastic pollution. On Thursday, to celebrate World Environment Day, a large-scale programme was taken up in the district to plant saplings and remove plastic waste from canals and drains under 'Vanam-Manam.' As part of this, collector Nagarani, District Superintendent of Police Adnan Nayeem Asmi, district Joint Collector T Rahul Kumar Reddy, DRO Mogili Venkateswarlu, and district officials from various departments enthusiastically participated in the sapling planting programme at Collectorate here. Later, collector Nagarani participated in the programme to remove plastic waste along the Vissakoderu canal and on the footpaths at the overpass on JP Road. She inspected the waste removal work being done in the canals under the auspices of the Irrigation Department and made several suggestions to the irrigation officials. As part of the waste removal, the soil placed on the banks was ordered to be moved to another area in a day or two. She ordered that the waste removal work in the four main canals in Bhimavaram town be completed on a war footing. She advised the municipal and police officials not to allow coconut shells along the canal banks under any circumstances and that action should be taken against this. Speaking on the occasion, collector Nagarani said that a programme to plant 3.85 lakh saplings has been started across the district as part of World Environment Day. Preparations have been made for planting saplings in government offices, places, roads, along the canal banks and panchayat places. She asked the people to be partners in this and to bring about a change in the climate by planting saplings in the house premises and in open spaces outside. She said that nurseries have been developed in Venkataramannagudem, Seetharampuram and Konithivada villages of the district under the supervision of the Forest Department. She said that plants are the oxygen for humans and it is everyone's responsibility to plant trees in large numbers. She said that staff from all departments took part to remove waste in the canals. District Additional SP V Bhima Rao, District Forest Officer D Asha Kiran, and others participated in the programme.

Vijayawada: As the Andhra Pradesh govt gears up to plant one crore saplings under the 'Vanam-Manam' programme to enhance green cover on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, the state reported 468 hectares of primary forest loss in 2024, the second highest after 561 hectares of primary forest loss eported in 2017. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Andhra Pradesh lost a total of 6,550 hectares of primary forest cover between 2002 and 2024, making up 16% of the total tree cover loss during the same period, according to the latest Global Forest Watch (GFW) report. Subsequently, in another disturbing development, Andhra Pradesh lost 5.73 thousand hectares of natural forest last year, which is equivalent to 1.75 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. As of 2020, the state had 2.46 million hectares of natural forest, extending over 15% of the total land mass, the report mentioned. According to the GFW report, Andhra Pradesh stood in the 13th place out of 28 states and eight union territories in terms of tree cover loss between 2001 and 2024, losing trees to an extent of nearly 42.4 thousand hectares. Meanwhile, Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur, the four north-east states, were responsible for 52% of all tree cover loss during the same period. In terms of tree cover loss, which is about 42.4 thousand hectares, this is equivalent to a 3.8% decrease in tree cover since 2000 and 23.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. As per the GFW data, Andhra Pradesh lost 2.87 thousand hectares of tree cover in 2024 and 2.96 thousand hectares in 2023, i.e., 0.26% and 0.27% of tree cover loss. Andhra Pradesh reported the highest tree cover loss of 3.26 thousand hectares in 2011. Further, East Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts were responsible for 76% of the total tree cover loss that occurred between 2001 and 2024 in the state. East Godavari witnessed the highest tree cover loss at 16.4 thousand hectares compared to an average of 3.26 thousand hectares. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It was further found that 66% of tree cover loss occurred in areas where the dominant driver is deforestation. For permanent agriculture, a record 26.8 thousand hectares of tree cover was axed, while another 214 hectares of tree cover was lost due to infrastructure and settlements, and another 23 hectares for hard commodities. However, Andhra Pradesh made significant strides in tree cover gain between 2002 and 2020 by gaining 194 thousand hectares of tree cover, which is equal to 11% of the overall tree cover gain in the country. Under the tree cover gain charts, Karnataka leads in first place with 222 thousand hectares of tree cover gain, with Andhra Pradesh in second place.

Vijayawada: In a move towards ecological sustainability and climate resilience, AP govt is set to kick off an unprecedented greening initiative on (Thursday), aiming to plant a record one crore saplings across the state in a single day. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Branded under the flagship 'Vanam-Manam' programme, this campaign is part of a long-term mission to transform the state's landscape and increase green cover from the current 29% to an ambitious 50% by 2047. The afforestation mission aligns with the global call for urgent climate action and is deeply rooted in local environmental challenges. With a geographical area of 1,62,923 sq km, AP currently boasts a green cover of 48,978 sq. km (30.05%)—comprising both forested areas and trees outside forests. To reach the 50% mark, govt plans to green an additional 32,483 sq km by systematically planting native tree species on all available public and private lands. Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, accompanied by deputy chief minister and environment minister, will formally launch the Vana Mahotsavam at a state-level event, with parallel ceremonies held at the district, constituency, mandal, village, and institutional to the 2025-26 action plan, over 5.58 crore saplings will be planted on 1.79 lakh hectares throughout the year, supported by multiple departments, including forest, rural development, horticulture, APFDC, and even private players like paper mills through CSR initiatives. On World Environment Day alone, the forest department is expected to plant 37 lakh saplings, with substantial contributions from rural development (30 lakh), APPCB (10 lakh), and govt lands, railway and canal bunds, schools, universities, housing colonies, degraded forest areas, and lands surrounding industries will serve as plantation sites, transforming them into pockets of biodiversity.
