Metro 4 trial runs in September, operations by year-end: Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde

THANE: Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday announced that trial runs for the Mumbai Metro Line 4 will begin in Sept, with operations expected by the end of the year. The corridor, connecting Wadala to Kapurbawdi, has been extended to Gaimukh as Metro 4A and is also being linked to Mira-Bhayander (Metro 10) beyond, where it will further integrate with other Mumbai metro lines, forming a seamless loop across the Metropolitan Region, Shinde said while speaking at the 31st edition of the Varsha Marathon by the Thane Municipal Corporation, which saw over 20,000 participants. "Work on the Thane internal metro line with interchange stations with Metro 4 is also progressing, which will provide last-mile connectivity and benefit commuters from Thane and neighbouring areas," Shinde said. Shinde had earlier stated that trial runs on the Gaimukh-Majiwada stretch (Metro Line 4 partial and 4A) would commence before year end. However, activists and opposition leaders now question the timeline, pointing to the present delays in station construction, particularly along the Ghodbunder stretch and the Mogharpada car shed, which is yet to be built. MMRDA officials said 85% of the work on the corridor is complete. A crucial installation of a 58-metre steel span at Pantnagar-Ghatkopar bus station was also completed over the weekend, officials said. Authorities disclosed plans to transport 48 Metro coaches from the Mandale depot (Line 2B) to the elevated section between Gaimukh and Cadbury on Line 4 to enable trial runs and pre-commissioning work without waiting for depot completion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Female Athletes in the World Click Here Undo Meanwhile, Shinde also outlined plans to decongest Thane roads by rerouting freight and outbound traffic from Gujarat, Nashik, and JNPT via the Mumbai freeway extension and Coastal Road, bypassing the city and diverting vehicles to Saket and Fountain Hotel junctions. He asked Thane municipal commissioner Saurabh Rao to utilise the Rs 3,000 crore budget released by the state during his tenure as CM to preserve Thane's identity as the "City of Lakes," maintain green cover, and ensure pothole-free roads. Thane marathoner complains of uneasiness after race, dies

Thane: A 56-year-old resident of Manpada died of a suspected heart attack a few hours after he participated in the Varsha Marathon organised by the Thane Municipal Corporation on Sunday. The runner, Benny Devassy, successfully completed the 21-km run, while his wife, who is a teacher at a prominent school in the city, participated in the 10-km run, neighbours informed TOI. The couple returned to their home in Manpada after the run, following which the man complained of uneasiness and was rushed to a private hospital by his family, where he was declared dead in the afternoon. The family is known to have taken him to another hospital, which also confirmed his death. "Devassy was an avid runner and even participated in a few marathon events abroad. He used to work and live abroad and came home a few weeks back," said a neighbour. "It's shocking as he was fit and a health-conscious person," said the neighbour. A senior official from the Thane Corporation said they were unaware of the incident and claimed there were no runners who complained of uneasiness during the event or immediately after it. "We had 13 ambulances stationed along the route that attended to minor cases of bruises and fatigue. We will screen the list of complaints registered with our medical teams afresh on Monday to know if the deceased approached them," said an official.
