Controversy avoided! R Ashwin, team cleared of ball-tampering allegations in TNPL
R Ashwin and Varun Chakravarthy celebrates a wicket in TNPL. Former India cricketer R Ashwin has been cleared of ball-tampering allegations in the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). Ashwin-led Dindigul Dragons had been accused of tampering with the ball during their match against Siechem Madurai Panthers. The Madurai franchise alleged that Dindigul tampered with the ball by using towels treated with chemicals during their game in Salem on June 14. In that match, played at the Salem Cricket Foundation Ground, the Dragons defeated the Panthers by nine wickets. Batting first, the Panthers posted 150 for 8 in 20 overs. Ashwin went wicketless but conceded only 27 runs in his four overs. However, he made an impact with the bat, scoring 49 off 29 balls as an opener, helping the Dragons chase down the target in just 12.3 overs. In a letter to TNPL, Madurai franchise COO S Mahesh wrote: 'A serious case of ball tampering occurred during our recent match against Dindigul Dragons. Despite repeated warnings, the Dindigul team blatantly tampered with the ball, using towels that appeared to have been treated with chemicals.' Madurai coach Shijit Chandran added: 'The ball's condition deteriorated rapidly during our innings, affecting our batsmen's performance. You could hear the sound of every shot our batters played after the powerplay — as if they were hitting hard stone instead of a cricket ball. "We believe the Dindigul Dragons team used foreign substances to alter the ball's condition, including special towels with pre-applied roughening agents. This is unacceptable, against the spirit of the game, and amounts to cheating.' However, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) said it found no evidence of ball tampering during the game. R Ashwin announces retirement from Test cricket 'The towels in question were TNCA-issued and equally available to both teams,' TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan said in a statement. 'The Playing Control Team — including umpires and the match referee — maintained full oversight of the ball throughout the match. No concerns were raised during play, and no verifiable evidence has been provided. The claims appear speculative and post-facto in nature.' The towels were provided by the state cricket association to wipe the ball if it got wet. The drying was done in the presence of the on-field umpires. Therefore, the TNPL asked the Panthers to submit proof at the earliest to 'substantiate' their allegations.

Defending champions KKR, owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, are almost out of IPL 2025 Playoffs race after their two-wicket loss to CSK at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday. KKR bowler Varun Chakravarthy was fined 25 per cent of match fees by BCCI and handed one demerit point. "Varun Chakaravarthy, Bowler, Kolkata Knight Riders has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated One Demerit Point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team's match against Chennai Super Kings at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday," said the media statement from IPL. Varun Chakravarthy claimed 2/18 in 4 overs vs CSK in Kolkata. He was retained for Rs 12 crore before the IPL 2025 mega auction last year. Varun Chakravarthy was fined because of his aggressive send-off to CSK batter Dewald Brevis after dismissing him. BCCI punishes KKR's Varun Chakravarthy for IPL code of conduct breach vs CSK
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been fined 25% of his match fee and received one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team's clash with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. While the IPL governing body did not elaborate on the specific incident, the breach was classified as a Level 1 offense under Article 2.5 of the Code of Conduct. The article pertains to actions, gestures, or language directed at a dismissed batter that could provoke an aggressive reaction. Chakravarthy gestured to Dewald Brevis to leave the field after dismissing him-an act that led to the sanction. "Varun Chakravarthy admitted to the Level 1 offense under Article 2.5 and accepted the Match Referee's sanction," read an IPL statement. As per the rules, the match referee's decision for Level 1 breaches is final and binding. Chakravarthy had returned excellent figures of 2 for 18 in four overs, dismissing a dangerous Brevis, who had powered CSK's chase with a rapid 52 off 25 balls. The breakthrough moment offered KKR a glimmer of hope, but their defence of 179 fell short in the end. The loss marked a significant setback for the two-time champions, who now find themselves sixth on the points table with 11 points from 12 matches. With only two league games left, KKR must win both - against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 10 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 17 - to stay in playoff contention. Even that may not be enough, as they will need favourable results elsewhere. However, a relatively healthy net run rate of +0.193 could be a key differentiator if multiple teams finish on similar points. Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! KKR's Varun Chakravarthy becomes joint-fastest spinner to reach 100 IPL wickets
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 8 (ANI): Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Varun Chakravarthy completed 100 wickets in his Indian Premier League (IPL) career on Wednesday. The spinner achieved this milestone during his side's IPL match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. During the game, Chakravarthy led the KKR bowling attack from the front, with a four-over spell of 2/18. He got wickets of Ravindra Jadeja and in-form Dewald Brevis during the defence of 180 runs, which KKR failed to do. Now in 83 matches, Varun has 100 wickets at an average of 23.31, with an economy rate of 7.47 and best figures of 5/20. This also includes one wicket for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in his solitary game for the franchise in 2019. For KKR, he is their third-highest wicket-taker with 99 wickets in 82 matches at an average of 23.19, next to Andre Russell (124) and Sunil Narine (208), two of the franchise's biggest legends. He is the joint-fastest among spinners to 100 IPL wickets, joining Indian veteran Amit Mishra and Afghanistan superstar Rashid Khan (83 innings each), outdoing Indian spinner Yuzi Chahal (84 innings). This season, Varun is KKR's top wicket-taker and fifth-highest overall, with 17 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 19.35 and economy rate of 7, with best figures of 3/22. After winning the toss, KKR opted to bat first. A second wicket 58-run stand between skipper Ajinkya Rahane (48 in 33 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes) and Sunil Narine (26 in 17 balls, with four boundaries and a six) propelled KKR forward with a fine run-rate. After that, knocks from Andre Russell (38 in 21 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes) and Manish Pandey (36* in 28 balls, with a four and six) helped KKR reach 179/6 in their 20 overs. Noor Ahmed (4/31) topped the bowling charts for CSK while Anshul Kambhoj and Ravindra Jadeja got a piece each. In the run-chase, CSK was reduced to 60/5 in 5.2 overs. A counter-attacking 51 from Dewald Brevis (in 25 balls, with four fours and four sixes) and his 67-run stand with Shivam Dube brought back some momentum to the Men in Yellow. Dube (45 in 40 balls, with two fours and three sixes) continued being the aggressor in his 43-run partnership with skipper MS Dhoni, taking CSK to the brink of a win. However, in a twist, Vaibhav Arora got both Dube and Noor Ahmed in the penultimate over, leaving CSK with eight to get in final over, with two wickets left. Dhoni (17* in 18 balls, with a six) pulled off the finish fans wanted from him, tonking Andre Russell for a six on first ball of the final over and let Anshul hit the winning runs. CSK finished at 183/8 in 19.4 overs, getting their third win of the season. Vaibhav Arora leaked runs, but was the pick of the bowlers for KKR with 3/48 in three overs. Varun Chakravarthy (2/18) and Harshit Rana (2/43) were also among the wicket-takers for KKR. With three wins and nine losses, CSK still stays at the bottom of the points table. KKR currently has 11 points, with five wins, six losses and a no result in 12 matches. Their playoff chances have taken a serious hit as they sit at the sixth spot. (ANI)
