KKR's Varun Chakravarthy becomes joint-fastest spinner to reach 100 IPL wickets

India Gazette08-05-2025

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 8 (ANI): Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Varun Chakravarthy completed 100 wickets in his Indian Premier League (IPL) career on Wednesday.
The spinner achieved this milestone during his side's IPL match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
During the game, Chakravarthy led the KKR bowling attack from the front, with a four-over spell of 2/18. He got wickets of Ravindra Jadeja and in-form Dewald Brevis during the defence of 180 runs, which KKR failed to do.
Now in 83 matches, Varun has 100 wickets at an average of 23.31, with an economy rate of 7.47 and best figures of 5/20. This also includes one wicket for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in his solitary game for the franchise in 2019. For KKR, he is their third-highest wicket-taker with 99 wickets in 82 matches at an average of 23.19, next to Andre Russell (124) and Sunil Narine (208), two of the franchise's biggest legends.
He is the joint-fastest among spinners to 100 IPL wickets, joining Indian veteran Amit Mishra and Afghanistan superstar Rashid Khan (83 innings each), outdoing Indian spinner Yuzi Chahal (84 innings).
This season, Varun is KKR's top wicket-taker and fifth-highest overall, with 17 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 19.35 and economy rate of 7, with best figures of 3/22.
After winning the toss, KKR opted to bat first. A second wicket 58-run stand between skipper Ajinkya Rahane (48 in 33 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes) and Sunil Narine (26 in 17 balls, with four boundaries and a six) propelled KKR forward with a fine run-rate.
After that, knocks from Andre Russell (38 in 21 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes) and Manish Pandey (36* in 28 balls, with a four and six) helped KKR reach 179/6 in their 20 overs.
Noor Ahmed (4/31) topped the bowling charts for CSK while Anshul Kambhoj and Ravindra Jadeja got a piece each.
In the run-chase, CSK was reduced to 60/5 in 5.2 overs. A counter-attacking 51 from Dewald Brevis (in 25 balls, with four fours and four sixes) and his 67-run stand with Shivam Dube brought back some momentum to the Men in Yellow. Dube (45 in 40 balls, with two fours and three sixes) continued being the aggressor in his 43-run partnership with skipper MS Dhoni, taking CSK to the brink of a win.
However, in a twist, Vaibhav Arora got both Dube and Noor Ahmed in the penultimate over, leaving CSK with eight to get in final over, with two wickets left.
Dhoni (17* in 18 balls, with a six) pulled off the finish fans wanted from him, tonking Andre Russell for a six on first ball of the final over and let Anshul hit the winning runs. CSK finished at 183/8 in 19.4 overs, getting their third win of the season.
Vaibhav Arora leaked runs, but was the pick of the bowlers for KKR with 3/48 in three overs. Varun Chakravarthy (2/18) and Harshit Rana (2/43) were also among the wicket-takers for KKR.
With three wins and nine losses, CSK still stays at the bottom of the points table. KKR currently has 11 points, with five wins, six losses and a no result in 12 matches. Their playoff chances have taken a serious hit as they sit at the sixth spot. (ANI)

'He's the best bowler in the world': Jasprit Bumrah receives massive praise from former foe ahead of England Tests

Jasprit Bumrah's former adversary has hailed him as the best fast bowler in the world ahead of the India vs England Test series. Bumrah received the praise for his calm persona, his competitiveness, and unique bowling action. read more Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad has praised Jasprit Bumrah , calling him the best fast bowler in the world at the moment. Speaking on the For The Love Of Cricket podcast with Jos Buttler, Broad said that Bumrah is going to be a big threat for England in the upcoming Test series. India and England are slated to kick-start their five-match Test series on 20 June at Headingley, Leeds. Ahead of the crucial encounter, which will mark the start of the new cycle of the World Test Championship for India, Broad showered massive praise on the ace bowler. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Broad says Bumrah is the best bowler in the world 'No doubt in my mind he's the best bowler in the world at the moment. He showed that in Australia. He's going to be pretty dangerous in these conditions, isn't he? Certainly someone England won't want to face across five Tests — if he plays them all, he'll pick up a shedload of wickets,' Broad said. Broad also spoke about Bumrah's personality. He said Bumrah is usually calm and laid-back, but he has a strong fighting spirit when he's on the field. 'He's such a calm guy, quite laid-back most of the time — but there's this amazing competitive streak in him,' Broad said. 'That spell in Australia, when he got into a scrap with Sam Konstas and then got Usman Khawaja out — he was screaming and roaring. Every great fast bowler needs that emotion.' Broad explains why facing Bumrah is difficult Broad further explained why facing Bumrah is so difficult for batters, especially in Test cricket. He said Bumrah's smooth run-up and quick delivery can catch batters by surprise, as he releases the ball from about a foot closer than most bowlers. He even compared Bumrah to legends like Shoaib Akhtar and Glenn McGrath. 'When he jogs in, you might think he's bowling at 70 miles an hour, but then he surprises you at 90. That makes it really hard for a batter to get used to him,' Broad said. 'Shoaib Akhtar would sprint in and bowl 100 miles an hour, so you were always ready. Bumrah's different. His short run-up is very balanced and controlled, and he never loses his rhythm. I always admired Glenn McGrath's smooth delivery, and Bumrah is very similar in that way,' he added. Bumrah will not play all five Test matches in England due to workload management. The Indian pacer did not take up the captaincy for the same reason. With Shubman Gill as the new captain, India will look to win even without Bumrah, but there's no denying that his presence will definitely help. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Karnataka high court bars police from widening RCB stampede probe for now

The Karnataka high court on Tuesday barred the state police from expanding the scope of its investigation beyond the initial first information report (FIR) registered in connection with the June 4 stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium that left 11 dead and several injured. The court also continued the restraint on the Bengaluru police from arresting officials of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and event management firm DNA Entertainment in the case. Justice SR Krishna Kumar directed that, for the time being, police must confine their investigation to the offences mentioned in the first of three FIRs registered suo motu following the incident. The court extended the interim protection from arrest granted earlier to the senior officials of RCB, KSCA, and DNA Entertainment until July 8. The FIR, registered at the Cubbon Park Police Station in Bengaluru, names the KSCA management for alleged negligence during the crowd-control disaster that unfolded as thousands gathered to greet the RCB team following its first-ever IPL title win. It also charges them under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for the offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. While all three entities have been named in the FIRs, no specific individuals from any of the organisations have been identified as accused. The court also took note of the state government's submission that only the FIR currently under investigation by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) would be pursued. The direction came during hearings on pleas filed by RCB, DNA and KSCA seeking quashing of the FIRs. Their counsel argued that all three FIRs arose from the same incident and covered identical grounds, making multiple investigations unwarranted. The stampede took place on June 4 when an overwhelming crowd turned up at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to witness RCB's IPL victory celebrations. According to the state, the stadium's capacity is around 30,000, but over two lakh people reportedly gathered outside and around the venue. The government has maintained that the tragedy was triggered by RCB's announcement of free passes for fans to attend the event. It alleged that RCB and DNA Entertainment failed to obtain the necessary permissions or put in place basic safety measures to control the massive turnout. Meanwhile, in parallel proceedings, a separate bench comprising by acting chief justice V Kameswar Rao and justice CM Joshi, hearing a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) into the incident, decided to implead RCB, DNA Entertainment and KSCA as parties to these proceedings. The bench also said it would appoint an amicus curiae to assist the court in examining the matter further. The state has already constituted a one-member judicial commission led by retired high court judge Justice JM Cunha to conduct an independent inquiry into the stampede. A separate magisterial inquiry is also underway. Last week, the state submitted a sealed cover status report on both inquiries before the division bench. The court on Tuesday said it will also consider whether the government can continue keeping the findings and interim reports confidential during the course of the proceedings.

James Anderson set to lead Lancashire in County Championship

New Delhi [India] June 17 (ANI): Former England legendary seamer James Anderson is set to lead Lancashire in their next two County Championship matches, with the 42-year-old stepping into an interim role due to Marcus Harris returning to Australia for the birth of his child, according to ESPNcricinfo. He has played once in the Championship this season, after a calf injury ruled him out for the first six weeks, but has been in good form in the Vitality Blast. He is set to lead the side against Kent in Blackpool starting on Sunday, which will be his first experience of captaining a professional XI. Anderson will become Lancashire's third red-ball captain this summer, with Harris having succeeded Keaton Jennings after a difficult start to the season that also cost Dale Benkenstein his job as head coach. Lancashire are currently second from bottom in Division Two, having drawn five and lost two of their seven games, but they have enjoyed a successful start to the Blast, winning four of six to sit third in the North Group. Anderson has played his part, returning to the format after more than a decade and taking ten wickets in four matches. The Blast will break after Friday's fixtures for two rounds of the Championship, with Lancashire facing Kent at home before a trip to play Derbyshire at Chesterfield. Harris will miss both games, but Lancashire will be able to call on Australian overseas signings Ashton Turner and Chris Green. Anderson, who recently retired after playing 188 Tests, is regarded as England's greatest fast bowler. Anderson remains England's leading wicket-taker in ODI cricket, with a tally of 269 scalps that may never be beaten. However, he claimed just 18 in his 19 T20Is, with his last match in the format coming against South Africa at Centurion in 2009. The 42-year-old English pace wonder, who retired from international cricket after taking 704 Test wickets and over 991 international scalps. (ANI)
