State on alert for I-Day celebrations
Ranchi: State police headquarter has sounded a general alert across Jharkhand in order to ensure law and order during Independence Day celebrations on Friday. Police have also intensified operations in the extremists affected areas in this regard. Jharkhand police spokesperson and IG (operation) Michel Raj said, "The alert had been issued though there is no input related to any specific threat. The superintendents of police have been asked to take precautions to ensure peaceful celebrations. Additional forces have been sent to Ranchi and Dumka for state-level functions." Police have been asked to keep vigil at public places, including project sites, an official stated. Khunti sub-divisional police officer Varun Rajak said, "Anti-extremist operations have been held in view of the I Day celebrations. Police would conduct the exercise in the bordering and the sensitive areas of the district on Friday as well." Inspector general (South Chhotnagpur) Mamoj Kaushik said enhanced security would be in place around Morabadi ground with more CCTVs being set up for surveillance. The venue would also be surveyed by drones. Railway Protection Force is also on the vigil as they are checking the passengers and their bags before entry to the stations. Cops seize poppy bulbs worth 1.67 crore in Khunti district
Ranchi: Acting on a tip-off, Khunti police seized poppy bulbs worth Rs 1.67 crore in an operation carried out near the Sulhe village under the Khunti police station limits in the night intervening Thursday and Friday. Khunti SP Manish Toppo on Friday said, "Police received information at around 1:30 am on Thursday night regarding loading of poppy bulbs on a truck and formed a team under the leadership of SDPO Varun Rajak to conduct the raids. As the team reached the spot at around 4 am, four to five men involved in loading of sacks on a 10-wheeler truck escaped from the spot taking advantage of the darkness." He added that police searched the truck to recover 39 sacks of poppy bulbs weighing 1,114 kilograms hidden amidst 350 China clay bags. The SP said the police have registered a case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act in this connection and started investigation.

Man arrested for firing at a boy in Khunti
Ranchi: A day after a 14-year-old boy was shot at outside his house located at Badaiktoli under the Khunti police station area on Sunday, a person has been arrested. Khunti SDPO Varun Rajak said, "One Shiv Nayak has been arrested. A country-made gun, which was used in the crime, was seized from the accused. Raids are under way to arrest the other accused, Abhimanyu Nayak. Both the accused are residents of the same locality as of the victim. A case was registered under secs 109 and 3(5) of the Arms Act." The minor boy was admitted in local hospital with injuries on the hand. He is out of danger, police added.
