RRTS reaches Modipuram, final trial runs begin on Delhi-Meerut corridor
Meerut: The Namo Bharat train , part of the Regional Rapid Transit System ( RRTS ), has begun trial runs up to Modipuram — the final station on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During Thursday's run between Shatabdi Nagar and Modipuram, the train traversed Meerut's underground section for the first time, NCRTC officials said. Chief public relations officer of NCRTC, Puneet Vats, said, "Until now, trials were being conducted at both ends of the operational corridor — New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan and Meerut South to Shatabdi Nagar. This is a historic milestone as trains are now running across the entire Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor." He added that NCRTC would now evaluate the train's integration with various subsystems, including tracks, platform screen doors (PSDs), and the overhead power supply. Extensive trials, including high-speed tests reaching the design speed of 180 kmph, will follow in the coming days. Meanwhile, trial runs for the Meerut Metro are also underway on the Meerut South–Meerut Central stretch. For the first time in India, a local metro will share infrastructure with a regional transit system. The 23-km Meerut Metro corridor includes 18 km of elevated and 5 km of underground tracks, with 13 stations — three of them underground. The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS is the country's first such corridor and a joint venture between the central government (50%) and the governments of Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan (each holding 12.5%). The project, estimated at Rs 30,270 crore, will reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut to just 50 minutes. The corridor includes 24 stations, with 70.5 km elevated and 11.5 km underground. Vats said the corridor is expected to be fully operational by June 2025.

2km arm of Hindon elevated rd to link new township & capital
Ghaziabad: A 2km arm of the Hindon elevated road may connect the upcoming Harnandipuram township with Delhi at UP Gate, Delhi-Meerut Expressway and NH9. A plan still on the drawing boards, GDA officials said if the 10km elevated road is extended further towards the city forest area from the Raj Nagar Extension (RNE) roundabout to meet the outer ring road abutting villages from where land is to be acquired for the township, it could provide direct connectivity between the eastern and north-eastern parts of the city. GDA, which has already surveyed areas along RNE roundabout, estimates the road extension project to cost Rs 200 crore. Currently, Hindon elevated road spans from Rajnagar Extension to Ghazipur border. Two ramps on it allow vehicles to access the elevated road from Indirapuram and Vasundhara. "We conducted a survey to chalk out a possible route from where the elevated road could be extended towards Harnandipuram. According to the proposal, a 2km arm of the elevated stretch from the roundabout on the RNE side abutting Hindon river via city forest area will be constructed, which will be further joined with the outer ring road," GDA vice chairperson Atul Vats said. UP is currently in talks with farmers to decide on the land rates for five villages from which 336 hectares is to be acquired for Harnandipuram township. The rates will be four times the DM circle rate as per the provisions of the Land Acquisition (Rehabilitation & Resettlement) Act 2013. Under the CM Urban Expansion New City Promotion Scheme, UP has allocated Rs 400 crore for the development of the township. As per one estimate, Rs 15,000 crore will be needed to develop Harnandipuram, and a large chunk will go into acquiring land at mutually agreed rates from the farmers. Out of this, 50% ofcost will be borne by the state govt under the CM Urban Expansion New City Promotion Scheme, with the remaining amount covered by the GDA. Meanwhile, UP Housing Board, which administers Vasundhara and Sidharth Vihar townships, has recently proposed two cloverleaf interchanges on Hindon elevated road to provide commuters from Vasundhara and Sidharth Vihar direct access to Delhi via UP Gate and RNE. A 24km road—part of it a bridge over the Hindon—is proposed from Sidharth Vihar to the elevated road to allow vehicles to travel towards UP Gate directly. A grade separator and cloverleaf interchange is to let commuters travel towards RNE carriageway of the elevated road. The board has also proposed to build a 7km link road from Vasundhara's Sector 7 to the elevated road and a cloverleaf interchange further ahead, near the Kanawni culvert, in order to allow commuters to travel to Delhi without exiting the elevated road.

Campus talk: Mumbai schools, parents unite to get children moving and beat obesity
In an innovative move to promote better physical health among the young generation, schools in Mumbai are encouraging parents to participate in the #MoveForHealth campaign. This initiative, launched by the Early Childhood Association (ECA) and the Association for Preparatory Education and Research (APER), aims to combat the increasingly sedentary lifestyles and the rising concern of obesity among children. As part of this campaign, parents are encouraged to have their children engage in physical activity for at least 10 minutes every hour from 9 am to 8 pm. Activities can include walking, running, jumping, or any other form of movement. Research has shown that prioritizing physical activity, outdoor play, and a healthy lifestyle can help children develop good habits and lower the risk of negative health outcomes. Schools that are members of these associations believe that implementing smaller interventions can lead to a significant difference instead of making large lifestyle changes all at once. The president of ECA and APER, Swati Popat Vats, said, 'With #MoveForHealth campaign, the idea is to make movement an integral part of children's lives with small interventions through fun activities. By participating in this campaign, schools and parents will be including a significant physical activity in children's daily lives.' ECA and APER, having combined 48,000 educators as their members across India, had floated a survey among over 10,000 parents from schools in metro cities, such as Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, to gauge children's outdoor and physical activity habits. As per the findings of this three-month-long survey, 63 per cent of children engage in less than 1 hour of physical activity per day, whereas 28 per cent have no physical activity or outdoor play in their routine. While 67 per cent have no motivation or prefer a sedentary lifestyle due to screens or other reasons, 45 per cent of children are overweight or significantly above average weight. Dr Vats said, 'During the survey, many parents shared that children use their free time on screens, leading to a sedentary lifestyle. Many parents also shared that their children preferred to be in 'temperature controlled' areas and did not like to 'sweat'. This survey is an eye opener and we urge schools and parents to help bring about change and make movement a 'fun' activity instead of a 'forced' activity so that children embrace it willingly.' The survey, which sounded alarming concerns over the lack of physical activities among young children, led to the campaign. Sangeeta Puri, principal of Children's Academy school, who is participating in the campaign, said, 'These small initiatives make a real difference. For example, in our school, we provide a timetable to students on what to bring every day in the tiffin, which is decided to ensure that children get a balanced and healthy meal. Now that school has a rule on this, children do not fight with parents for not wanting to eat healthy food.'
