Vauxhall Astra driver drove while drunk in Newtown
A banned driver who had been out drinking in Newtown has received a suspended prison sentence after he chose to drive his partner's car home in a bid to avoid a row. Brian Rowlands was stopped by police with his partner across the back seats of the Vauxhall Astra on Llanidloes Road. Helen Tench, prosecuting, explained it was the early hours of the morning when police officers noticed Rowlands driving the car, but it was registered to a woman with no named male drivers on her insurance policy. She continued: "A female passenger was lying across the rear passenger seats. "Officers said his eyes were glazed." Mrs Tench added that Rowlands was 13 months into a 40-month disqualification at the time of the offence for drink driving in 2024 and had another conviction from 2022. He had 61 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35ug. Carl Atkinson, from the probation service, said: "The defendant had been out drinking and there had been a disagreement between him and some other people. They followed him and his partner, so they attempted to leave in a taxi, but none were available, so he made the decision to drive. "It was a poor decision made when he was in a particularly high emotional state." Rowlands, of Glandwr in Newtown, had previously admitted drink driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance at Welshpool Magistrates' Court last month. Representing himself at Tuesday's (July 15) hearing, the 37-year-old said: "I regret what I have done, it was a big mistake." Chairman of the bench of magistrates, Lawrence Monk, told Rowlands: "We consider this to be very serious. You have driven while drunk three times in three years, and so we are minded to give you a prison sentence." Magistrates sentenced Rowlands to 16 months in prison, but suspended it for 12 months as they felt there was "a real prospect of rehabilitation". They said he would be sentenced to eight weeks in prison for drink-driving, and eight weeks for driving while disqualified, to run consecutively. He will also complete 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days. Rowlands also received a 36-month driving ban for drink-driving, a 12-month ban for driving while disqualified, plus the 27 months outstanding from his previous ban, to run concurrently. No separate penalty was issued for driving without insurance.
