Thousands offer ‘bali tharpanam' in Thiruvanthapuram
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thousands of people offered bali tharpanam for ancestors at various places in the state capital, as part of the annual Karkkidaka Vavu on Thursday. The rituals started as early as 2 am at some places. In spite of coastal erosion posing threat, many went to Papanasam and Shankhumukham to offer bali for the departed souls. 'Over 1 lakh people offered bali tharpanam on the Papanasam beach in Varkala,' municipal deputy chairperson Kumari Sudersini A told TNIE. Despite light rain and strong waves, devotees poured in large numbers than in the previous years. 'However, Wednesday evening was not as busy as the usual eve of Vavu Bali,' said Papanasam ward councillor Ajayakumar C. Thiruvallam Parasurama Swami Temple, a key place for bali tharpanam too witnessed major rush from the morning. Marking one of the highest devotee counts for Vavu Bali, the temple saw close to 47,000 people offering bali. 'The crowd was heavier than last year. Extensive arrangements were made with the collaborative efforts of multiple departments, including the fire and rescue, the police, and the KSRTC,' said Thiruvallam ward councillor Sathyavathi V.

Collector reviews final preps for Vavu Bali rituals
T'puram: District collector Anu Kumari on Wednesday reviewed the final preparations for Karkidaka Vavu Bali rituals in Thiruvananthapuram . She assured that all necessary arrangements were completed to facilitate the smooth and safe conduct of the annual rituals at major bali offering sites. Speaking after a virtual meeting with representatives from various departments, Kumari stated that the infrastructure and logistical set-up at all key locations are fully in place. The Vavu Bali rituals, held annually in the Malayalam month of Karkidakam, will take place at prominent centres including Thiruvallam, Shanghumugham, Varkala, Aruvikkara, Vellayani, Aruvippuram, Neyyattinkara and Kadinamkulam. All ritual activities will be conducted strictly in accordance with green protocol, as part of district administration's commitment to environmentally sustainable practices. To ensure public safety and crowd management, 900 police personnel have been deployed across the various locations. Preparations in full swing for Vavu Bali rituals
Kochi: Extensive preparations are being made in the district for Karkidaka Vavu Bali rituals on Thursday. Considering the continuous rain, district administration is making arrangements accordingly. All preparations for bali tharpanam at Aluva Shivaratri Manappuram, Perumbavoor Chelamattam Sreekrishna Temple and banks of Periyar river in Kalady are nearing completion. A review meeting was held at Aluva PWD Rest House under the leadership of Anwar Sadath, MLA, and additional district magistrate Vinod Raj to discuss security arrangements and facilities to be set up in advance of the Vavu Bali offerings on Saturday. Facilities will be arranged at Aluva Advaita Ashram, established by Sree Narayana Guru, for bali tharpanam from early morning on Thursday. At Perumbavoor Chelamattam Sree Krishna Temple, bali tharpanam will begin at 1am and continue until noon. Special bus services have been arranged from Angamaly and Perumbavoor KSRTC depots to the temple. District medical officer has been instructed to deploy sufficient staff and arrange ambulance services. Services of fire rescue force will be ensured. Instructions have been given to KSEB to take steps for providing temporary electricity connections. Excise department has been instructed to ensure that there is no illegal sale of liquor or use of narcotics. Measures have been taken to ensure availability of drinking water. Food safety department will inspect quality of food items provided in local shops, hotels and other places. Supervision of arrangements related to Vavu Bali has been assigned to Fort Kochi sub-collector and Muvattupuzha RDO.

Liquor outlets to remain closed for Vavu Bali
Thiruvananthapuram : District administration declared the closure of liquor shops on July 24 in connection with Karkidaka Vavu Bali. District collector Anu Kumari ordered the closure of all liquor outlets within the limits of the city corporation, Varkala municipality and Aruvikkara and Perunkadavila grama panchayats. The prohibition on liquor sales will be in effect from July 23 midnight to 2pm on July 24. The collector stated that the ban was implemented to prevent untoward incidents and ensure law and order, as a large number of people, including women and children, were expected to gather for the ritual at Thiruvallam Parasurama Temple, Varkala Papanasam beach, Aruvikkara Devi Temple and Aruvippuram Shiva Temple. Hundreds of temples, especially those which share a compound with a river, provide facilities to people to offer bali tharpanam on the Vavu Bali day.

Tensions mar corporation's Karkidaka Vavu meeting
Thiruvananthapuram : A preparatory meeting organised by city corporation on Wednesday in connection with the forthcoming Karkidaka Vavu Bali rituals turned tense following disruptions by BJP representatives. The meeting, chaired by the mayor, was intended to include various elected representatives and officials to coordinate arrangements for the annual ritual. However, BJP workers allegedly manhandled deputy mayor P K Raju for not holding a discussion on the alleged graft charges against the ruling party. Despite the disruption, the meeting was held and necessary preparations for conducting the rituals efficiently were finalised. The Vavu Bali is on July 24. Thiruvallam Parasurama Temple and Shanghumugham beach are the major centres for the ritual under the corporation limits. The meeting emphasised on desilting and cleaning of bathing ghats at Thiruvallam Temple by the city corporation and the deployment of more lifeguards at Shanghumugham. Kerala Water Authority will rectify the showers set for devotees near the river at Thiruvallam. Parking grounds have been identified across Thiruvallam and a strict parking ban will be enforced on the NH 66.
