State constitutes task force to tackle stray dog menace
Panaji: A day after Monday's Supreme Court order on stray dogs, the state directorate of animal husbandry and veterinary services (AHVS) has formed a task force to address the menace in the state, reports Nida Sayed . 'This task force will soon convene meetings with all stakeholders, including civic bodies. They will hold point-by-point discussions on the committee's role and formulate a coordinated approach for managing stray dogs in the state,' director Veena Kumar told TOI . The committee will be chaired by deputy director (epidemiology) Dr Nitin Naik. It will include South Goa representative Dr Atanazia Fernandes, who is assistant director, veterinary hospital, Sonsoddo, and North Goa representative Dr Charlette Fernandes, assistant director, government poultry farm, Ela, Old Goa. The move comes in the wake of the Supreme Court directive to municipal authorities in Delhi and parts of the national capital to pick up and house all stray dogs in dedicated shelters within eight weeks. TOI reported last month that state govt would introduce the Goa Animal Breeding and Domestication (Regulation and Compensation) Bill, 2025, to prohibit the domestication and breeding of ferocious animals and ban the import of such breeds. According to the bill, any person who contravenes this law will face imprisonment of up to three months, a fine of Rs 50,000, and community service. The bill empowers the govt to declare any breed or class of animals to be ferocious. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Beef shortage in Goa, traders for export ban
Panaji: Goa has seen a sharp 85% decline in beef supply, with just 2-5 tons entering the state over the past few days. The usual supply is around 20 tones a day, excluding 8-10 tons typically supplied to cold storage facilities and hotels. 'There is an ongoing strike by meat traders in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Since the meat supply to Goa comes from Belagavi, Karnataka, meat availability in Goa has been hit,' said director, animal husbandry and veterinary services, Veena Kumar. The state's only abattoir in Usgao, Goa Meat Complex, took the matter to the chief minister, Pramod Sawant, following which he addressed the matter at the monsoon assembly session on Tuesday. Until supply resumes in Goa, the complex is working out solutions to meet the local demand for the red meat. 'We are in talks with a slaughterhouse in Aurangabad to procure beef from there. We are currently working on the modalities and exploring the possibility of procuring one container of beef to Goa to cater to the shortage,' a source said. Goa Meat Complex has refrigeration facilities of 70 tons at the abattoir, where this meat is expected to be stored. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain Knee pain | search ads Find Now Undo On Tuesday, most beef traders downed their shutters in Margao, while only a few shops operated in other parts of Goa. The Quraishi meat traders association has urged govt to impose a complete ban on live cattle exports from the state, calling for immediate govt intervention in the matter. 'We are against cow slaughter, but buffalo meat should be allowed for consumption. The beef consumers in Goa are not getting enough supply at affordable rates, so govt must first satisfy the local demand before venturing into exports for a profit,' said its general secretary, Anwar Bepari. In the current financial year, so far, a total of 1,305 animals were exported by Goa govt under an agreement between Goa Meat Complex and Sunface Agro Foods Pvt Ltd.

Govt pushes for Frieswal cattle to boost dairy sector
Panaji: With at least 90 Frieswal cattle at the cattle breeding farm at Copardem, Sattari, the department of animal husbandry and veterinary services (AHVS) plans to enhance the local dairy industry. Indian council of agricultural research (ICAR), Goa, recently held a meeting on the dissemination of high-quality Frieswal cattle germplasm. AHVS director Veena Kumar expressed readiness to collaborate with ICAR to expand its production and distribution statewide. Frieswal cattle—a crossbreed with a genetic composition of 5/8 Holstein Friesian and 3/8 Sahiwal—was developed by ICAR-central institute for research on cattle (CIRC), Meerut, and the defence ministry. It was introduced in 1987 to boost India's dairy stock. They are known for yielding up to 4,000 kg of milk with 4% fat content per lactation over 300 days. Their high productivity and adaptability make them ideal for Goa's dairy farmers. The vision of the Frieswal cattle project is to enhance milk production while maintaining the resilience of indigenous cattle breeds. The Holstein Friesian component brings high milk yield potential, while the Sahiwal infusion ensures better heat tolerance and disease resistance, suited to India's tropical climate. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mulher de 58 anos com rosto de bebê?
