Indian teams for Asian squash championships announced
Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI), on Thursday (May 29, 2025), announced the teams for the Asian individual championships (June 17 to 21) and Asian doubles championships (June 23 to 26) in Sarawak, Malaysia. Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh, India's leading singles players, have chosen to play only in doubles. The duo won the mixed doubles title in the National doubles championships in Chennai recently. Abhay had clinched the men's doubles title with Velavan Senthilkumar while Anahat had won the women's doubles crown with Joshna Chinappa. Speaking to The Hindu in Chennai on Thursday (May 29, 2025), Cyrus Poncha, Secretary of SRFI, said, 'In the beginning itself, we had a discussion with them (Abhay & Anahat) and their priority was to play the doubles event.' SRFI insisted that it has gone by the rule book when it came to selecting the teams. 'For Asian individuals, we have chosen the players who performed well in the trials and in doubles, we have selected all those who finished in the top two in the Chennai Nationals. All, as per the guidelines that SRFI had issued in November last year in its website,' Cyrus added. The team Asian individual championships: Men: Velavan Senthilkumar, Suraj Chand, Rahul Baitha, Diwakar Singh; Women: Akansha Salunkhe, Joshna Chinappa, R. Pooja Arthi, Shameena Riaz. Asian doubles championships: Men: Abhay Singh & Velavan Senthilkumar; Ravi Dixit & Guhan Senthilkumar; Women: Anahat Singh & Joshna Chinappa; Pooja Arthi & S. Rathika; Mixed: Abhay & Anahat; Velavan & Joshna.

Top seeds have it easy in men's and women's sections
Men's top seeds Abhay Singh and Velavan Senthilkumar beat Joel Dhinakaran and Lakshmana Hari 11-2, 11-1 in the first round while women's top seeds Joshna Chinappa and Anahat Singh defeated V. Deepika and Janet Vidhi 11-5, 11-5 in the third round of the HCL National doubles squash championship at the Indian Squash and Triathlon Academy (ISTA) here on Tuesday. Joshna and Anahat clinched five consecutive points in the first game to make it 8-2 from 3-2. Deepika and Janet saved two match points before going down. Other results (third round): Women: Pooja Arthi and S. Rathika bt Sahana and Sangamitra 11-2, 11-1. Mixed: Velavan Senthilkumar and Joshna Chinappa bt Guhan Senthilkumar and Aradhana Kasturiraj 11-8, 11-3; Rahul Baitha and Anjali Semwal bt Kalimuthu and Ananya Narayan 11-9, 9-11, 12-10; Suraj Chand and Pooja Arthi bt Pradeep Choudhary and Nina Bose 11-2, 11-4.

National Doubles
The Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI) on Monday announced that the HCL National doubles squash championship will be held from May 20 to 23 at the Indian Squash Academy (ISA) here. The tournament will feature India's top squash talents — including Abhay Singh, Velavan Senthilkumar, Joshna Chinappa, and Anahat Singh — competing for a total prize money of ₹3,30,000. The event will serve as a platform to select players to represent India at the Asian squash doubles championships, tentatively scheduled for July 4 to 7. Cyrus Poncha, SRFI secretary-general, said: 'The National doubles championship plays a vital role in grooming talent for international competition. 'With strong performances last year, we are optimistic about India's chances at the Asian championships. This tournament reflects our continued commitment to promoting excellence in squash.'
