Velvet hopes to spark renewed interest in Dusun with new album

Published on: Wednesday, May 14, 2025 Published on: Wed, May 14, 2025 Text Size: Velvet's ambition is to encourage a new generation to embrace their mother tongues, using music as a medium for cultural revival and pride. Kota Kinabalu: Sabahan singer-songwriter Velvet Aduk hopes to spark renewed interest in indigenous languages with the release of her long-awaited Dusun-language album, Ogingol, which dropped on May 10 across all major streaming platforms. The nine-track album is a deeply personal tribute to her Dusun and Kadazan roots, blending contemporary musical styles with ancestral dialects to produce something fresh and meaningful. Titled after its lead track, Ogingol, which translates to 'beautiful', the album features original songs that explore themes of identity, belonging, and cultural pride. Other tracks include Nokosuai, Bolintuongon, Mintogod, Miang-Miang Keladi, Kaandaman, Nouyan (a duet with Arddley Nicholas), Kopiruba Wagu Insan Tadau, and Koupusan Ginawo Ku. Most of the songs were written and composed by Velvet herself, and the album was co-produced and co-arranged by longtime collaborator Brandon Laurie, with Andy O'Mail on lead guitar. Notably, Kaandaman, written in Kadazan, marks Brandon's debut as a songwriter, expanding the creative team's contribution to preserving native expression. 'This album is my way of promoting and preserving my culture, just as we do every year during Kaamatan,' Velvet said. 'It is not just music – it is my way of learning, remembering, and giving back,' she added, describing the process as both educational and emotionally grounding. Raised in Kampung Inobong, Penampang, Velvet grew up immersed in the language of her ancestors, a connection that profoundly shaped her songwriting. Through her lyrics, she captures the richness of Dusun and Kadazan dialects as spoken across Sabah, weaving linguistic diversity into the fabric of her melodies. Far from a traditional folk collection, Ogingol pushes the boundaries of Dusun music, delivering polished arrangements that range from introspective ballads to radio-ready pop. 'I want Dusun songs to sound elegant and classy,' she explained, highlighting her desire to balance artistic authenticity with listener accessibility. Each track blends Velvet's distinctive vocal style with modern instrumentation, setting a new benchmark for contemporary indigenous music. The duet Nouyan features Arddley Nicholas, the Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) 23 Best Male Vocal award winner, further boosting the album's musical intensity. Velvet's ambition is to encourage a new generation to embrace their mother tongues, using music as a medium for cultural revival and pride. The album is now streaming globally on Spotify, iTunes, YouTube Music and other digital platforms, inviting listeners everywhere to discover the beauty of Sabah's native languages. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? How the Velvet-Wood mine in Utah may help fighter jets

The U.S. Department of Interior is hoping to turn an old mine in a remote area in San Juan County into a new mine that will aid in building fighter jets. On Monday, the agency announced it is expediting the review of what it says is a 'major energy project' to mine for critical minerals in an astounding time frame of 14 days. 'The expedited mining project review represents exactly the kind of decisive action we need to secure our energy future. By cutting needless delays, we're supporting good-paying American jobs while strengthening our national security and putting the country on a path to true energy independence,' said Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. The proposed operation would mine uranium and vanadium at what was once the old Velvet Mine to capture what was once left idled. If approved, the Velvet-Wood mine project in San Juan would produce uranium and vanadium by accessing the old Velvet Mine workings and developing the Velvet-Wood mineralization. The agency says commercial uses of uranium include fuel for civilian nuclear reactors, as well as various uses in medical applications. Uranium is also used for fuel in U.S. Navy nuclear reactors, such as on the Virginia-class attack submarine, and in the production of tritium, which is required for nuclear weapons. Additionally, vanadium has important uses, namely as a strengthening agent in steel production. It is also used in titanium aerospace alloys in both commercial and military aircraft — think of those fighter jets and defense. 'Top Gun' came out in 1986, a wildly popular movie showcasing the talent of the U.S. military. It was resurrected in 2022, with a continuation of the story starring Tom Cruise in 'Top Gun: Maverick.' While it may seem like it is all about glamour, the reality is the United States needs these materials. According to the agency, this new mine which is old would result in three acres of new surface disturbance given the proposed underground mining plan and the existing surface disturbance from the old Velvet mine. Anfield Resources is the company involved in the project. It also owns the Shootaring Canyon uranium mill in Utah, which the company intends to restart. That mill would convert uranium ore into uranium concentrate. 'Today's actions will greatly accelerate the permitting review of the Velvet-Wood,' said Adam Suess, acting assistant secretary for land and minerals management with the Bureau of Land Management. 'By fast-tracking the review process for the project, we are driving American energy dominance and ensuring our nation's energy security,' he added in a press release.

Vatic Ventures to acquire uranium properties in Namibia

Canada-based exploration and development company Vatic Ventures has entered into a share purchase agreement to acquire a 100% interest in private company Velvet Clean Energy, subject to approval from the TSX Venture Exchange (TSXV). The private company holds rights to acquire up to an 80% interest in EPL 8289 (ZOYA property), and up to a 90% interest in EPL 8735 (GALORE property), both located in the uranium province of Erongo within the Alaskite Alley in Namibia. The ZOYA property spans 44.62km² and the GALORE property 87.65km² within a jurisdiction known for significant uranium production. The properties are strategically located near the Husab and Rossing uranium mines, with access to infrastructure. Vatic will issue 7.5 million post-consolidation common shares to Velvet shareholders at a deemed price of C$0.06 ($0.043) per share under the agreement. For EPL 8289, Velvet can earn an initial 70% interest by making cash payments totalling $600,000 (£449.05m) and issuing shares valued at $400,000. The initial 70% interest vests with cash payments spread until 31 March 2027 and share issuances on specified dates in 2026 and 2027. Velvet must also meet a minimum expenditure obligation of $3m over four years, or $1.5m over three years, to exercise the second option to acquire an additional 10% interest. The terms for EPL 8735 require cash payments of $200,000 and share issuances worth $150,000 to earn an 80% interest. An additional 10% can be acquired upon funding further exploration and a feasibility study, with the acquisition price contingent on the results. Upon completion of the transaction, Velvet will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Vatic. The company also plans to change its name to Ballistic Energy Metals and consolidate its shares on a three-old-for-one-new basis. Vatic CEO Loren Currie said: 'These uranium exploration assets are contiguous and on strike with some of the largest uranium mines in the world, Husab the 3rd and Rossing the 7th largest uranium deposit worldwide, and it also helps to be situated in one of the top mining jurisdictions in Africa, with a tremendous record of uranium production. 'The gap between uranium supply and demand has been persisting on the market and is predicted to widen even more because of the degradation of the uranium supply industry over a decade of prolonged low prices and with many more governments turning to nuclear power for secure clean baseload power. 'We foresee huge challenges to meet new demand in the medium to long term, which will drive uranium prices up and render uranium resources such as those that we hope to discover on EPL 8289 and EPL 8735 significantly valuable.' In December 2023, Vatic Ventures signed an agreement to acquire a 100% interest in private company 1432714 BC, which holds an option to acquire a Brazil-based lithium property, Solonópole South, from arms-length vendors. "Vatic Ventures to acquire uranium properties in Namibia" was originally created and published by Mining Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
