Ventura police release details in 2023 homicide; suspect also charged in Ojai woman's death
The Ventura Police Department has released new details in a 2023 homicide, days after a suspect was arrested and charged in the case. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office charged Christian Alexandre Hillairet, 25, with two counts of murder on June 6. The charges stem from the recent killing of an Ojai woman and that of a Ventura man found dead in late 2023. The police department identified him as William Thompson, 46. This week the department said that authorities found Thompson's body on Nov. 5, 2023, near the railroad tracks in the 6600 block of Nightingale Street in Ventura. Officers had responded to a 911 call reporting a body near the tracks. The Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office later ruled his death a homicide. After what police described as a lengthy investigation, detectives obtained new evidence in the case when the sheriff's office arrested Hillairet in early June, according to a news release. Police did not provide details about the new evidence, saying doing so could jeopardize the case. Carolyn Nino De Rivera, 26, was found dead in a home in the Upper Ojai area on May 31. Investigators said they learned Hillairet, a suspect in the killing, had crossed the border into Mexico. With help from federal and Mexican authorities, he was arrested in Rosarito days later, officials said. He was booked into county jail on June 5. His arraignment on the murder charges has been continued and he has not yet entered a plea. The Ventura Police Department urged anyone with information about the Thompson case to contact the police at 805-650-8010. Authorities name victims in 5 recent fatalities around Ventura County
The Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday released names and other information in five recent fatalities. For all of the traffic incidents, the cause of death was determined to be some type of blunt force injuries and the manner was found to be accidental. From the most recent incident to the oldest, they are: The bicyclist killed on Pacific Coast Highway Saturday was identified as 66-year-old John C. McLaughlin of Los Angeles. The collision involving a car was reported around 11:15 a.m. north of Sycamore Canyon Road. California Highway Patrol officials said McLaughlin had been riding a Specialized bike on the northbound shoulder when, for unknown reasons, he abruptly turned into the traffic lane. He was hit by a northbound Mazda 3 sedan and died at the scene from his injuries, the CHP said. The 37-year-old Malibu woman driving the Mazda and her passenger, a 42-year-old Malibu man, weren't injured, CHP officials said. A pedestrian hit in a predawn collision in Oxnard on Feb. 16 was identified as Shaik H. Nabi, 54. The medical examiner described Nabi as unsheltered. He had reportedly been walking outside a marked crosswalk shortly before 5 a.m. on Fifth Street, east of Rose Avenue, according to the Oxnard Police Department. He was hit by an eastbound Honda Pilot SUV driven by a 29-year-old Oxnard resident who stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to police. Authorities said neither speed nor drugs or alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash. A man fatally shot in Oxnard on Feb. 16 was identified as Ruben E. Villa, 39, of Camarillo. The medical examiner determined the cause of death was gunshot wounds of the head and the manner was homicide. Villa was found around 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of H and Second streets, according to the Oxnard Police Department. The crossing is near the old Oxnard High School campus where the future Campus Park is planned. Police, who had previously released the victim's name, said they began life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived, but Villa died at the scene. No arrests in the case had been reported as of Wednesday evening. A woman who died in a two-vehicle crash in Ventura on Feb. 15 was identified as Susan L. Birdsall, 83, of Ventura. Birdsall was the passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a GMC pickup around 1:45 p.m. at Loma Vista Road and Victoria Avenue, according to the Ventura Police Department. Police said the SUV had been traveling eastbound on Loma Vista and was going through the intersection when it clipped the truck, which had been turning right onto Loma Vista from northbound Victoria. Authorities didn't know which vehicle had the green light. The force of the crash rolled the truck over and left the SUV on its side in the driveway of a home east of the intersection. Ventura City firefighters carried out an intricate operation to extricate both people in the SUV. Birdsall was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later died, police were told that night. The driver was said to be seriously injured but stable. The two people in the GMC truck got out of the vehicle on their own and weren't seriously hurt, authorities said, although all four people involved were reportedly taken to the hospital. The medical examiner has previously released the name of a man who died after getting hit by two vehicles in Oxnard on Feb. 14, but the agency hadn't yet determined cause and manner of death. Oxnard resident Rosario Armenta was 79. He had reportedly been walking in the roadway around 6 a.m. on the 14th at the intersection of Hueneme Road and Salvador Drive, the Oxnard Police Department said. Armenta was taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center. The two drivers who struck him stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. On Wednesday, the medical examiner said the cause of death was blunt force head injuries and the manner was accidental.
