The Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office said it was 53-year-old John M. Kimmis who was discovered in his vehicle in the 800 block of West Main Street. He was described as homeless.
On Feb. 18 around 3:10 p.m., Ventura police officers responded to a report of a man slumped over the steering wheel of his car parked across the street from a RV park west of the Ventura River, police said at the time.
Officers determined that Kimmis had been dead for some time and determined his death was not suspicious. The cause and manner of death have not been determined yet, officials in the medical examiner's office said.

Ventura police release details in 2023 homicide; suspect also charged in Ojai woman's death

The Ventura Police Department has released new details in a 2023 homicide, days after a suspect was arrested and charged in the case. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office charged Christian Alexandre Hillairet, 25, with two counts of murder on June 6. The charges stem from the recent killing of an Ojai woman and that of a Ventura man found dead in late 2023. The police department identified him as William Thompson, 46. This week the department said that authorities found Thompson's body on Nov. 5, 2023, near the railroad tracks in the 6600 block of Nightingale Street in Ventura. Officers had responded to a 911 call reporting a body near the tracks. The Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office later ruled his death a homicide. After what police described as a lengthy investigation, detectives obtained new evidence in the case when the sheriff's office arrested Hillairet in early June, according to a news release. Police did not provide details about the new evidence, saying doing so could jeopardize the case. Carolyn Nino De Rivera, 26, was found dead in a home in the Upper Ojai area on May 31. Investigators said they learned Hillairet, a suspect in the killing, had crossed the border into Mexico. With help from federal and Mexican authorities, he was arrested in Rosarito days later, officials said. He was booked into county jail on June 5. His arraignment on the murder charges has been continued and he has not yet entered a plea. The Ventura Police Department urged anyone with information about the Thompson case to contact the police at 805-650-8010. 3 killed in crash involving motorcyclist fleeing Southern California police

Three people in San Bernardino County, including two uninvolved people, were killed in a crash involving a motorcyclist reportedly attempting to flee sheriff's deputies, authorities confirmed to KTLA. The tragic incident unfolded at around 10:30 a.m. when deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the motorcyclist for reckless driving in Redlands. 'The driver of the motorcycle did not yield and fled from the deputies,' SBSD Public Information Officer Mara Rodriguez said in a statement to KTLA. 'The motorcycle driver collided [with] a vehicle on Redlands Boulevard near Tennessee Street.' All three individuals involved in the crash were declared deceased. In footage of the crash aftermath, what appears to be a black Toyota Prius is seen overturned in the street with a large number of deputies and medical personnel from the fire department at the scene. Debris from the crash littered the street and it appeared that items from inside the Toyota Prius had spilled out of the vehicle, either as a result of the impact or when crews extracted the victims. While the intersection was cordoned off as investigators worked at the scene, it's unclear where the motorcycle came to a stop after the high-speed crash. SBSD officials did not say whether deputies initiated a pursuit of the motorcycle driver, only that they attempted a traffic stop. Additionally, no information was provided on the ages or genders of those killed in the violent collision. PIO Rodriguez said that investigators with the California Highway Patrol are conducting an investigation into the incident. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
