Patagonian moments on Australis Cruises sailing
"Would you like to have a Patagonia moment?" our Chilean guide asks us, 40 minutes into our sentry duty at the base of the Pia Glacier in Tierra del Fuego: "Te invito a tener un momento de silencio?" Twenty yapping voices are quieted in the vastness of this pinpoint at the edge of the earth. I hear a deep rumbling and cracking, like the timbers of a ship being crushed by ice, before a hunk breaks free from the mass to which it's been attached for the last 400 to 500 years and crashes into the frigid water to begin its cycle once again. Zodiacs provide incredible access to glaciers in Tierra del Fuego's narrow fjords. Photo Credit: Megan Padilla Few people have witnessed this glacier calving because of its remote location in a fjord off the Beagle Channel near the farthest tip of South America. Access to one of the planet's most remote coastlines is what lures guests aboard Australis Cruises' Ventus and Stella. The 200-passenger sister ships crisscross the southern fjords of Patagonia between the Chilean port of Punta Arenas and Argentina's Ushuaia on four-night trips that run nonstop September to April, during the South American summer. The only way to see this dramatic and desolate scenery carved by ice is by boat, through the same passageways famously charted in the age of exploration. Australis has been dedicated to this route since 1990. For most guests, it is a one-way leg in a broader journey, whether as part of a South American tour package or a custom itinerary crafted by a travel advisor. Since I'd be flying 27 hours, from Minneapolis through the Chilean capital of Santiago to Punta Arenas, to experience an Australis cruise, I opted for a roundtrip that would take nine days. An AA Twin cabin. There are 100 cabins in six categories on the Ventus and the Stella, and each cabin has a large window. Photo Credit: Courtesy of Australis A different sort of connection I expected to see spectacular end-of-the-earth land- and seascapes. What I didn't expect was to feel so restored -- by nature, the effects of slow travel and having no cell or WiFi service (not even available for purchase). Australis' choice to limit its Starlink use to the crew sets an intention for the entire voyage: be in the moment. Due to Patagonia's complex tides and mercurial weather that can cover every season in an hour, the expedition crew never shared more than half a day's plan. It doesn't take long for me to let go of my need to know everything. When invited to a meal, I head down to the dining room. When summoned to a briefing, I go up to the Darwin Lounge to learn about our next excursion. In between, I nap, read or watch for whales, sea lions and dolphins from the large window in my cabin or from any of the three panoramic lounges. When the bird-watcher with the long camera lens rushes out to the deck, so do I. Nesting Magellanic penguins on Magdalena Island. Photo Credit: Courtesy of Australis/Florian Grieger Small-ship expedition cruises can go where larger ships can't. In nine days I spot a total of five other vessels. Two are sailboats, and one is our sister ship. Instead of docking at ports for excursions, guests load onto Zodiacs to be ferried to shore for hikes or go on a nature cruise for close-up viewing of glaciers, nesting seabirds, sea lions and penguins. The excursions are the highlight of each day, and the Australis expedition team's passion and knowledge are equally matched. Every Zodiac excursion begins by mustering in a lounge. Guests sort themselves into Spanish and English groups; the passenger manifest represents all 11 nationalities of the explorers who mapped the south part of Fireland (Tierra del Fuego) from 1520 to 1970: Portugal, Spain, England, the Netherlands, France, the U.S., Italy, Argentina, Austria, Germany and New Zealand. Guests arrive in head-to-toe layers, bulky orange life jackets buckled over the top, armored for adventure. The Cape Horn lighthouse. The captain and crew make every effort for a landing at the legendary spot. Photo Credit: Courtesy of Australis Calling on Cape Horn Though the roundtrip covers the same route, it looks different in reverse. A few excursions are repeated, including a second chance to land at Cape Horn; at the northern edge of the Drake Passage, Cape Horn is one of the world's most notorious shipwreck graveyards. For many passengers, this is the "life list" item they've come to check off. The captain and crew study weather and conditions and do everything possible to arrive in a window of possibility. I am lucky to land both times, climbing the 200 steps to the boardwalks leading to a monument and a lighthouse. I even meet the light keeper and his young daughter and son, who sell watercolor paintings and other souvenirs. During both visits, the captain calls us back to the ship by horn because the weather is taking a dramatic turn. We return to the ship chilled, damp and dirty but ebullient and chatty with the camaraderie of a shared experience. Folks drift off to their cabins to shed gear, then dribble back into the Darwin Lounge, the top-deck perch encircled entirely by windows and with a well-stocked, complimentary bar at its center. Blenders whir, shakers shake, ice clinks, drinks emerge in all shades and glass shapes. No one asks what time it is, not even those who typically abstain from day drinking. In Patagonia, we are all living in the moment.

Ventus Therapeutics to Present Phase 1 Results for VENT-03, a First-in-Class cGAS Inhibitor, at LUPUS 2025
WALTHAM, Mass. & MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Ventus Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company advancing two Phase 2 small-molecule programs for immunological, inflammatory, and neurological disorders, today announced the upcoming presentation of the Phase 1 safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics (PK), and pharmacodynamic (PD) results of VENT-03 at the 16 th International Congress on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (LUPUS 2025), taking place from May 21-24 in Toronto, Canada. VENT-03 is the first oral small-molecule cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) inhibitor to successfully complete a first-in-human Phase 1 study and was discovered using Ventus' proprietary ReSOLVE ® platform. Data from the Phase 1 study, initially announced in October 2024, showed that VENT-03 was safe and well tolerated at all tested dose levels with a favorable PK profile enabling once-daily dosing. 'We are pleased to present at LUPUS 2025 the first reported Phase 1 results for a cGAS inhibitor, demonstrating that VENT-03 has the potential to become a first- and best-in-class therapy for lupus and other autoimmune disorders,' said Marcelo Bigal, M.D., Ph.D., President and CEO of Ventus. 'Ventus is eager to unlock the potential of cGAS inhibition across multiple autoimmune diseases, with the first Phase 2 trial evaluating VENT-03 in patients with lupus to commence later this year.' The Phase 1, double-blind, placebo-controlled, first-in-human trial included 72 healthy adult volunteers across single ascending dose (SAD) and multiple ascending dose (MAD) cohorts. The study results show that VENT-03 was safe and well tolerated up to single doses of 2000 mg once daily (QD) and multiple dosing of 900 mg QD for 10 days, which are substantially higher than our anticipated Phase 2 dose. The proportion of participants with adverse events (AEs) in the MAD cohorts was similar for VENT-03 and placebo (79% vs. 75%), and the vast majority of AEs in the study were mild and considered unrelated to the study drug. The PK profile of VENT-03 supports once-daily dosing with or without food, and the PD results demonstrate robust target engagement, supporting further clinical development. 'More than five million people worldwide are estimated to have a form of lupus. These patients can experience disease progression and severe symptoms that can affect quality of life, and currently available treatment options may not be able to adequately address these symptoms for all patients,' said Mona Kotecha, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Ventus. 'Through targeting cGAS, VENT-03 has the potential to become a safer and more effective treatment option for patients in need, addressing key unmet needs across multiple organ systems while providing the additional benefit of once-daily oral dosing. We look forward to sharing these results and to connecting with the wider lupus community at LUPUS 2025.' Details of the poster presentation are as follows: Title: Safety, Tolerability, Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics in Healthy Volunteers of VENT-03, a Novel cGAS Inhibitor for the Treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Authors: Xavier Valencia, Kelly Pike, Loraine Warner, Conrad Winters, Jeanne Stewart, Ramsay Beveridge, Patrick Cyr, Nadine Fradet, Amandine Chefson, Ofer Spiegelstein Abstract Number: Poster 286 Session Date: May 22 nd About cGAS cGAS is an intracellular pattern recognition receptor that is activated after binding to double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) in the cytoplasm. The presence of dsDNA in the cytoplasm is often the result of cellular dysfunction, which is a hallmark of many autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Activation of cGAS leads to cGAMP formation, activation of STING, pronounced inflammation, and tissue damage. In both patients and preclinical models of disease, the cGAS pathway has been shown to be a key driver of lupus and other inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic sclerosis, dermatomyositis, and Sjögren's disease. About Ventus Therapeutics Ventus Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company advancing two Phase 2 small-molecule programs for immunological, inflammatory, and neurological disorders. Fujikura releases Ventus White wood shafts
Fujikura releases Ventus White wood shafts The fourth member of the Ventus wood shaft family, Ventus White targets golfers who need help generating clubhead speed and hitting fairways. Show Caption Hide Caption TaylorMade Qi35, Qi35 LS, Qi35 Max, Qi35 Max Lite drivers TaylorMade refined the weighting and balance of the new Qi35 drivers to make it easier to gain distance with ideal spin + a better launch conditions. Fujikura's Ventus line of golf shafts uses a color system to denote launch and spin characteristics. Ventus White is the newest addition to the line, featuring the softest handle section for moderate and slower swing speeds. The new shaft incorporates VeloCore+ technology to reduce twisting and improve shot dispersion. Instead of nonsensical codes or names that don't mean anything descriptive, several shaft brands have started using color systems over the last few seasons to make it easier for consumers and fitters to understand how shafts relate to each other. For example, Fujikura offers Ventus Black for fast-swinging players who need a low-launch, low-spin driver shaft. Ventus Blue flies slightly higher and with a little more spin while Ventus Red flies higher still and has the most spin. As versions of those shafts have been released, the color coding has stayed consistent, with black being the lowest flying, then blue, and finally red, which flies the highest and spins the most. Easy. Starting today, golfers are going to see a fourth color when they go to their local pro shops and specialty stores, Ventus White. The new Ventus White, which will cost $350, has the softest handle section of any of the Ventus shafts, with a medium-stiff midsection and a firm tip. Uncut, the shaft weighs 49 grams, but cut to a traditional driver length of around 45 or 45.5 inches, it will likely drop to between 40 and 45 grams. This new lightweight offering was created for players with moderate and slower clubhead speeds who can benefit from using lighter drivers and fairway woods, and it will be offered in regular and senior-flex versions. Several driver manufacturers have begun to offer drivers specifically made for the type of player the Ventus White targets, like Callaway's Elyte Max Fast, Xxio's 13 and TaylorMade's Qi 35 Max Lite. Fujikura has also offered extremely light shafts like Air Speeder and Vista Pro in the past, but Ventus White is the first brand offering to feature VeloCore+. The addition of VeloCore+ reduces the twisting a driver shaft naturally makes on the downswing, so golfers can keep the face square more easily and tighten their dispersion patterns.
