I worked in a shop next to the Coronation Street set - the cast showed their true colours away from the cameras and one star really stood out
A Coronation Street fan who previously worked next to the soap's old set has revealed how the stars were different to their on-screen characters - and one actress that stood out. The long-running ITV show has been a staple of the schedule for a whopping 63 years now, attracting a loyal fan base, from old to young. Before the show moved to its new base at MediaCity in Salford, Manchester, it was previously located at Trafford Wharf Studios. A former store worker who claimed to work right next to the famous cobbles has revealed how the actors would pop in when they weren't busy filming dramatic scenes. Taking to Reddit, the unnamed woman explained how she worked in TK Maxx, when it originally opened two decades ago. She said the entire cast were 'all lovely' but the late Liz Dawn stood out the most for her, branding her her 'favourite'. The woman explained: 'Liz Dawn was my favourite. She would stop and chat and sign autographs for every single person that approached her. She was lovely to all the staff.' She added: 'Other customers would say she could be served before them in the queue and she would say no, saying that she liked to queue and behave normally when she wasn't in work' Liz played the iconic role of Vera Duckworth and was married to Jack Duckworth (Bill Tarmey), living at 9 Coronation Street. She departed the role in 2008 after a whopping 34 years on the cobbles. At the time, she had been battling lung disease emphysema. Liz died in 2017 at the age of 77. Meanwhile, last month it was revealed how Coronation Street stars were left 'furious' over impending budget cuts. The ITV soap is set to have its episode count slashed by bosses after already seeing a number of stars axed from the programme. Now, the cuts have put another 'dampener' on the cast with their annual summer party said to have been cancelled. A source told The Sun that the stars have organised and will be paying for their own get together this year instead. They explained: 'It's been a difficult few months and people were really looking forward to the party, but it puts a bit of a dampener on things that they have to pay. 'It might not be a lot to some of the bigger known stars but for some staff it is. The fact that drinks aren't included is a real blow too.' The source added: 'People aren't really that surprised though considering the constant budget cuts.' Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
