One person died in the Vermilion River near Vermilion Falls on Saturday.
In a news release Monday, Greater Sudbury police said officers responded Saturday to a report of the drowning of a 27-year-old man.
'Information provided was that a group of individuals had been swimming in the area when one man separated from the group and began to struggle while attempting to return,' police said.
Pulled the man to shore
'Members of the public who were swimming, kayaking, and canoeing nearby attempted to assist the man as he went under the water. A community member in a canoe was able to locate the man under the water, jumped in and pulled the man to shore.'
Bystanders tried to revive him while they waited for emergency responders to arrive, but their efforts were unsuccessful, police said.
'We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,' the release said.
'We would also like to recognize and commend the courageous actions of the community members who intervened in an urgent effort to save a life.'
