Two rescued from sailboat caught on ‘notorious' shoreline on Lake Erie
VERMILION, Ohio (WJW) — Two people were rescued from a sailboat that had run aground on Lake Erie over the weekend.
According to the Vermilion Police Department, the marine patrol unit responded to a distress call just offshore from Sherod Park at about 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3.

The sailboat was approximately 500 yards offshore in waves that were about 2′ to 3′ high, according to the department's post on Facebook.
Two crew members were safely transferred onto the patrol boat, and a tow boat was eventually able to unground the sailboat and tow it back to Vermilion for a damage assessment.

'Boaters should be aware that this area of the Vermilion shoreline is notorious for this type of incident. The depth of Lake Erie is very shallow in this area, and the depth increases very slowly,' warned Vermillion police on Facebook.
The post goes on to explain that 500 yards from the shoreline is only about 4' deep. There are also several old submerged piers and many large boulders scattered throughout this area, said officials.
