Glam in the cold: How to slay a winter wedding
Tis the season to layer up and boot down.
Winter is slowly creeping in, and while most people are preparing for the cold, one thing that often slips under the radar is the winter wedding –or more precisely, what to wear to one.
We all have a rough idea of what works for a summer or spring wedding – those seasons are traditionally considered 'wedding season'. But as South African winters stretch longer and longer, it's time we start embracing winter weddings too. And don't worry –we've got the perfect guide to help you look stunning while staying snug.
We spoke to bridal stylist Veronica Phiri from The Wedding Collective to find out what makes for the perfect winter wedding guest outfit.
Her golden rule? Before diving into outfit planning, first consider the four style pillars: the venue, the culture, the colour palette and lastly, functionality – because yes, it's chilly, but you still need to be able to hit the dancefloor.

'If you can't sokkie, shimmy, and scoop the bouquet without freezing or tearing a sleeve, it's a no,' she says. 'Consider detachable sleeves, or go full glam with a statement glove moment,' referencing Elsa from Frozen.
While the thought of a winter wedding might make you want to reach for bulky layers that leave you looking more snowman than showstopper, Veronica swears by purposeful layering. 'Your coat should never feel like an afterthought thrown over your look in a rush,' she adds.
There are so many ways to style your winter wedding outfit, and Veronica encourages guests to think outside the box.
'Imagine a dramatic wool cape with satin lining floating behind you as you arrive. Or a cashmere trench belted over a sequinned slip dress – cinching you like a winter goddess.'

High necklines are another stylish and practical option to keep in mind –they add elegance while keeping you warm.
'A Chantilly lace, high-necked bodysuit with a full leg peeking out of a dramatic slit is very much in fashion right now. She's not just modest –she's mysterious.'
Yes, a wool cape or a fabulous coat can carry the look, but accessories are where the magic happens. Think vintage, cowgirl glam, old money –and prepare for the compliments to roll in. 'Don't skimp. Bell sleeves, puff sleeves, bishop sleeves –give the people drama! You'll stay warm, look incredible in pictures, and might just outshine the centrepieces,' she says with a wink.

Feathers: The more, the merrier. Whether on hats, cuffs, or hems, feathers add instant glamour, visual warmth, and a festive flair.
Velvet: A timeless classic. Rich, plush, and theatrical –go for ruched dresses, tailored suits or even jumpsuits in deep jewel tones.
Brocade: A true statement fabric. Opulent, structured, and ideal for blazers or dramatic skirts. 'Brocade is for when you want people to remember your outfit longer than they remember the vows,' says Veronica.
