Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati to lead team to bring Buddha's relics
BHUBANESWAR: Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati will lead a delegation accompanying the holy relics of Lord Buddha from Vietnam to India on June 2. The relics were taken to Vietnam from India for exposition on the gala celebrations of the United Nations Day of Vesak, which is observed annually on the full moon of May to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of Lord Buddha. These relics were on display in Vietnam during the Vesak celebrations from May 6 to 8. The relics have been provided by the Mahabodhi Society of India and the National Museum, Ministry of Culture, with the support of the International Buddhist Confederation. The relics, which travelled from Sarnath - the sacred site where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon - were flown to Vietnam in a special Indian Air Force aircraft. Speaking ahead of his departure to bring back the relics from Vietnam, the Governor said, 'It is a matter of great honour to accompany the sacred relics of Lord Buddha back to India. This spiritual journey reflects our shared civilisational heritage with Vietnam.'

Malaysian palm oil surges on stronger soyoils
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures extended gains to the third straight session on Tuesday after a long holiday weekend, supported by stronger rival soyoils and a weak ringgit, but rising stocks limited gains. The benchmark palm oil contract for July delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained 81 ringgit, or 2.07%, to 3,893 ringgit ($901.16) a metric ton at closing. 'Soyoil's premium over palm oil is increasing, exceeding $100 per ton for forward month shipments. This should drive higher demand during peak production months,' said a Mumbai-based trader, adding that rising soyoil prices will support palm oil. The contract rose as much as 3.22% earlier in the session, its biggest daily gain since March 7, as the market in Malaysia reopened after the Vesak holiday on Monday. However, palm futures eased after Malaysian Palm Oil Board data showed palm oil inventories jumped to their highest level in six months in April, as production surged to a decade-high for the month while local consumption dropped. Palm oil exports by the world's second-largest producer likely fell 9% in the May 1-10 period, according to cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services. Meanwhile, independent inspection company AmSpec Agri Malaysia estimated exports during the same period were up 0.6%. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract was up 0.08%, while its palm oil contract slid 0.03%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) were up 0.02%. Palm oil tracks the prices of rival edible oils as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, weakened 0.61% against the US dollar, making the commodity cheaper for buyers holding foreign currencies.

Bihar: Monks light candles near India's largest reclining statue of Lord Buddha
Gaya (Bihar) [India], May 13 (ANI): On the occasion of Buddha Purnima on Monday, Buddhist monks gathered near the Sleeping Buddha statue on the banks of river Niranjana in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, and lit candles to pray for peace in India and around the world. Dozens of monks participated in the candlelight prayer held late in the evening to mark Lord Buddha's 2069th birth anniversary. The ceremony was led by Bhante Arya Pal, the Founder Secretary of the Buddha International Welfare Mission. Speaking on the occasion, Bhante Aryapal said, 'Today is Vaishakh Purnima. It is a very special day because Lord Buddha was born on this day. At the age of 25, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and later, at the age of 80, he passed away in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. All these important events happened on Vaishakh Purnima.' He added, 'That is why this day holds great importance for all followers of Lord Buddha around the world; for people who know and respect Buddha truly honour him from the heart.' Buddha Purnima (also known as Vesak), which was celebrated on May 12 this year, marks Gautama Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana (death). Earlier on May 12, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended wishes on the occasion of Buddha Purnima and said that Lord Buddha's life will always inspire the world community towards 'compassion and peace.' 'Best wishes to all countrymen on Buddha Purnima. Lord Buddha's messages, based on the principles of truth, equality and harmony, have been a guide for humanity. His life dedicated to sacrifice and penance will always inspire the world community towards compassion and peace,' PM Modi posted on X. President Droupadi Murmu conveyed her heartfelt greetings to the people of India and to followers of Lord Buddha worldwide. 'On the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima, I extend my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all fellow citizens and the followers of Lord Buddha worldwide. The immortal message of non-violence, love and kindness given by Bhagwan Buddha, the embodiment of compassion, is the basic mantra for the welfare of mankind. His ideals strengthen our faith in eternal values of equality, harmony and social justice. His teachings inspire us to live a life based on morality,' President Murmu said. (ANI)
