Viral post circulating online claims Port of Seattle is now ‘effectively dead' thanks to Trump's China tariffs
A recent social media post stated, in part, 'not a single international cargo ship at the Port of Seattle. The port is effectively dead.' While the post went viral, a local news outlet, KING 5 News, decided to investigate the claims. According to the station's reporting, the information shared in the social media post wasn't true. Thanks to Jeff Bezos, you can now become a landlord for as little as $100 — and no, you don't have to deal with tenants or fix freezers. Here's how I'm 49 years old and have nothing saved for retirement — what should I do? Don't panic. Here are 5 of the easiest ways you can catch up (and fast) Nervous about the stock market in 2025? Find out how you can access this $1B private real estate fund (with as little as $10) Even as the Trump administration imposed up to 145% tariffs on most Chinese imports, which it has now temporarily walked back to about 30%, the port isn't a 'ghost town' yet. KING 5 News reported that, based on data from VesselFinder, which tracks vessel positions in real time, three container ships were docked in the Port of Seattle at the time of the post. The ships were registered in Portugal, Singapore and Hong Kong. They also reported that traffic to the Port of Seattle was up 7.3% over the previous 30 days, according to the Northwest Seaport Alliance. In March, volumes were up by 18.4%, but that lift may be partly due to early cargo movement in anticipation of tariffs. "The last forecast I saw was forecasting out over the next three months, and each month was forecasted to be down around 25% per month,' Ryan Calkins, Port of Seattle Commissioner, told KING 5 News. Ship traffic isn't the only thing that may trend downward. 'Unfortunately, we are beginning to see a reduction in the total number of containers coming off any particular vessel when they come in,' Calkins said. The Seaport Alliance says that some ships are arriving with 30% less cargo. Additionally, some U.S. export orders have been canceled, which may leave U.S. business owners struggling to store and sell their products. 'Unfortunately hearing stories right now of our agricultural exporters having to come back to the terminal and pick up containers full of agricultural exports to return back and store them as they wait for a customer because the sale that they had made to an overseas customer was canceled as a result of the tariff war,' Calkins told KING 5 News. As the tariff situation evolves, it's possible a resolution won't be reached in time to avoid fallout. 'If we don't get a resolution quickly, I think we're all going to feel a lot of pain in the pocketbook,' Calkins said. Read more: You're probably already overpaying for this 1 'must-have' expense — and thanks to Trump's tariffs, your monthly bill could soar even higher. Here's how 2 minutes can protect your wallet right now The Port of Seattle represents a key player in a massive trade network. If shipment volumes continue to drop, it's likely that people connected to the port will feel it financially. With a drop off in imports and exports, some of the people who might immediately see an impact include dockworkers, truck drivers and warehouse staff. As the impacts of tariffs play out across the economy, anyone closely connected to trade, like farmers and manufacturers, will also feel the pinch. Unfortunately, a job loss could spell financial disaster for many, with around a quarter of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, according to a Bank of Amreica report. The domino effect can start with drained emergency savings and move to early withdrawals from retirement savings and sliding into debt to keep the lights on. Not to mention the long-term impact of pausing progress toward financial goals, like saving for retirement and paying off debt. If you find yourself in a tight financial situation, budget for what you have and what are your immediate needs. Start by pulling back on discretionary purchases, like eating out and entertainment. From there, tap into any financial support available through your union or state, including unemployment benefits. While income assistance can help you stabilize the situation temporarily, if the impacts continue, consider exploring job retraining programs and picking up a side hustle, like driving for a ride-hailing or food delivery service, to pull in some income while you look for a more permanent solution. Sunken superyacht to be pulled from water: report
The British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-metre-long superyacht. Photo: VesselFinder The superyacht that sank off Sicily last year, killing British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and six others, will be lifted out of the water next month after its mast is dismantled, people close to the matter say. The recovery of the British-flagged Bayesian, lying on its right side at a depth of about 50 metres (164 feet), could help explain why it went down during a sudden storm off the port of Porticello, near Palermo - an event that has baffled naval experts. The salvage operation will be managed by a joint venture of Dutch companies HEBO Maritiemservice and Smit Salvage, the Italian officials, who declined to be named as they are not authorised to speak on the matter, said. Neither company was immediately available to comment. A ship carrying the mega crane HEBO Lift 10 has left the port of Rotterdam and is currently sailing off the French Atlantic coast, one of the sources said, adding that it will take 10 to 12 days to reach Porticello. Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian, of whom 15 survived. The survivors included nine of the 10 crew members and Lynch's wife, whose company owned the yacht. Lynch's daughter was among those who died. Italian prosecutors and coastguards have selected a recovery project led by TMC Marine Consultants, which involves pulling the 72-metre mast out of the water before the rest of the vessel in order to safeguard the hull and evidence it may contain. Other potential salvage plans, which involved turning the 55.9-metre yacht, which weighs 534 tonnes, almost 90 degrees on the seabed without dismantling its mast, were rejected because of the complexity of the procedure. Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near Palermo, have placed three crew members under investigation: Captain James Cutfield, a New Zealander, ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton and night watch duty sailor Matthew Griffiths. They are suspected of manslaughter and causing a shipwreck. The prosecutors have said the Bayesian will have to be pulled out of the water before the investigation can be concluded.

Portuguese cargo ship carrying toxic chemicals collides with US Military oil tanker off UK coast
London : A collision occurred off the northeast coast of England on Monday when a Portuguese container ship, the Solong, smashed into a US military-chartered oil tanker, the Stena Immaculate, CNN reported. The incident sparked a massive fire, a daring rescue operation, and concerns about potential environmental damage. According to maritime intelligence company Lloyd's List, the Solong was carrying sodium cyanide, a highly toxic chemical. The collision occurred around 10 am local time, approximately 10 miles off the English coastline in the North Sea, as per the ship tracking tool VesselFinder. All but one of the 14 crew members on board the Solong were brought safely to shore, the vessel's owner, Ernst Russ, confirmed the rescue effort in a statement Monday evening, as per CNN. By Monday night local time, an "extensive" search for the missing crew member had ended, the British coast guard said. The missing person had not been found. Ernst Russ also said in its statement that both vessels "sustained significant damage in the impact of the collision and the subsequent fire." A US logistics firm, Crowley, which manages the Stena Immaculate, confirmed that all crew members on board the Stena Immaculate are safe after a collision with the Solong. According to Alastair Smith, Head of Operations for Lincolnshire at East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, the incident resulted in 36 people being treated by ambulance services after reaching the shore, The Solong was carrying a hazardous cargo, including "an unknown quantity of alcohol and 15 containers of highly toxic sodium cyanide," Lloyd's List reported. It is unclear whether the cyanide has entered the water. Sodium cyanide, according to the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, releases a highly toxic hydrogen cyanide gas that interferes with the body's ability to use oxygen. According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), sodium cyanide can also turn into hydrogen cyanide on contact with water. Eyewitness videos captured the intensity of the incident, showing thick black smoke and flames engulfing at least one of the vessels. The Stena Immaculate was carrying military jet fuel and marine diesel on its way to Killingholme, England, according to a spokesperson for the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), an agency of the US Department of Defense. The tanker was on a long-term charter with DLA Energy, which manages and distributes petroleum and fuel products. It was scheduled to re-supply fuel to Killingholme before reloading and delivering fuel to locations in the Mediterranean, the spokesperson said. The Solong left the Scottish port of Grangemouth on Sunday evening and was headed for Rotterdam, the Netherlands, at the time of the collision, according to Vessel Finder.

All but one of the 37 crew of the two ships were brought safely ashore. One crew member from the cargo ship, Solong, was missing, the vessel's owner Ernst Russ said in a statement. The ship owner said "13 of the 14 Solong crew members have been brought safely (to) shore." The owner of the fuel tanker said all 23 of its crew members were safe. The two ships were still ablaze 12 hours after the collision, British coast guards said. They said they had ended the search for the missing crew member. They confirmed 36 others had been brought ashore, one of whom was hospitalized. The collision triggered a major rescue operation by lifeboats, coast guard aircraft and commercial vessels in the foggy North Sea. The British government said it was assessing "any counter-pollution response which may be required over the coming days." The Marine Accident Investigation Branch was investigating the cause of the collision. The U.S.-flagged chemical and oil products tanker MV Stena Immaculate was at anchor near the port of Grimsby on Monday morning after sailing from Greece, according to ship-tracking site VesselFinder. The Portugal-flagged container ship Solong was sailing from Grangemouth in Scotland to Rotterdam in the Netherlands when it struck the tanker's side.
