TSA refutes rumors about using Costco cards as an airport ID alternative
The Brief TSA officials are debunking reports that a Costco membership card can be used at airport security checkpoints. Officials stressed that the big-box membership card is not an acceptable form of TSA identification. They said trying to use the cards will result in significant delays for the traveler and others at the checkpoint. OAKLAND, Calif. - Federal transportation officials are strongly refuting internet rumors that suggest a Costco membership card can be used as a form of identification to get through airport security. What they're saying "That is not considered an acceptable form of identification. It's not a government-issued ID," said Transportation Security Administration Spokesperson Lorie Dankers, who noted that the agency has been very clear about what constitutes an acceptable form of identification for air travel, especially in the context of the REAL ID. The new law replacing the traditional driver's license with a REAL ID-compliant license for domestic air travel went into effect last month after years of delays. In addition to REAL IDs, other acceptable forms of identification include a passport, a U.S. passport card, a Veteran Health Identification Card, and a Department of Homeland Security trusted traveler card like Global Entry and NEXUS. "Adult passengers 18 and older must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel," the TSA specified on its website, with a list of acceptable IDs. The agency also noted that the list is subject to change without notice, and advised travelers to recheck it before getting on a flight. SEE ALSO: Traveling to the UK? You'll need this document to enter the country Dankers addressed the Costco card rumors by saying that every few months, this fallacy circulates on the internet, and people are misled to believe the membership card will be accepted at TSA security checkpoints. But she warned against depending on a Costco card or any non-governmental card to get you cleared to board a plane. A Reddit post from last month has gotten a lot of traction with many people discussing their experiences. "It's mostly click-bait," Dankers said. She did note that Costco cards and other identification that uses a photo can be used in extreme cases to support those travelers who find themselves in a bind due to lost or stolen identification. Dankers said that in the situation where a traveler only has a non-governmental-issued photo ID on them, anything from a Costco membership card to a library card or student identification, the cards can be used to establish a launching point in the strict and detailed process of proving their identity. It's better than not having any form of a photo ID. "At least we know that some place has given them an ID," the TSA spokesperson explained, while stressing, "That in itself is not considered an acceptable ID but is considered a baseline." That baseline would allow TSA officials to begin a vetting process, involving a series of verification steps to try and confirm someone's identity. But travelers are warned that it's not a process anyone would want to go through, as it's time-consuming, and if the person's identity can't be confirmed, they will be denied access to fly. "There is no upside to doing this because all it does is delay you," Dankers said, adding that it's not only going to delay the traveler without their proper ID on them, but the process can lead to long delays for others. A TSA agent working on your case will affect the workflow at the checkpoint and threaten the schedules of other travelers who are rushing to catch a flight. "It causes our resources to be taken," Dankers said, stressing, "It should only be used in the most extreme of cases." And even then, there's no guarantee your Costco or other non-governmental photo card will lead to a verification of your ID and allow you to get on that flight.

Flying without REAL ID will require alternate forms of identification
NEW YORK (PIX11) — REAL ID enforcement is finally in effect at airports nationwide, decades after the original legislation was passed but what can you do if you need to travel but didn't get a REAL ID in time? Travelers who aren't REAL ID ready can still fly but should be prepared for extra security, according to the head of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. However in the event that residents still don't have one, below is a list of other compliant means of identification that TSA will accept. Real ID deadline: New identification requirements begin tomorrow

Several forms of identification fall into the Real ID category. DETROIT (FOX 2) - After years of changing dates, the Real ID deadline is finally here. Real IDs will be required to fly domestically and access certain federal areas, like military bases, beginning on May 7. Here's what to know: What is a Real ID? The backstory The Real ID Act was passed in 2005 in response to the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the act set security standards for identification that is used to board domestic flights, access federal facilities, such as miliary bases, and access nuclear power plants. Types of Real IDs Several forms of identification fall into the Real ID category. Here are some examples: A driver's license with Real ID designation or an enhanced license - In Michigan, this means your license will have a star inside a gold circle or a star inside a gold Michigan. If your license does not have this, you may need to get a new ID. More on that below. A United States passport A United States passport card A foreign government-issued passport A Veteran Health Identification Card A U.S. Department of Defense ID For a full list of Real ID compliant identification, click here. How to get a Real ID license in Michigan To have your license or identification changed to a Real ID, you will need to visit a Secretary of State office and bring: Your current Michigan driver's license or ID A valid, unexpired U.S. passport or birth certificate If your name doesn't match the name on your birth certificate, you also need to bring certified documents, such as a marriage license, that shows each time your name has changed. Price If you are renewing your license or ID, there is no additional fee for a Real ID. However, if you are updating your identification outside of renewal time, you will have to pay $9 to update a license or $10 to update an ID. What happens if you don't have a Real ID? If you don't have a Real ID compliant identification on or after May 7, you will not be able to board a flight or access military bases and nuclear power plants. However, a non-Real ID license can still be used how it normally would be -- as identification, to cash a check, to drive, and to rent a vehicle, for example. REAL ID enforcement set for May 7
After years of being postponed, REAL ID enforcement will begin May 7. That means U.S. citizens and permanent residents will need to present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license to board domestic flights, enter military bases and certain federal buildings. Federal buildings such as Social Security Administration and U.S. Postal offices will not require a REAL ID for access. 'If or when a person needs a REAL ID-compliant license, they can still get one after May 7,' said Allen Blair, deputy director of Public Affairs at Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. 'That is not a deadline, but the enforcement date when TSA will begin requiring a REAL ID to fly or visit a military base, for example. There are also options, as there are alternative forms of REAL ID that people can use — a passport, passport card, global entry card, military ID, and Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) are among the several forms of REAL ID that let you fly. We just want people to consider their needs, and have a plan.' According to Blair, currently, more than 1.33 million Kentuckians (36.6%) have obtained their REAL IDs. 'In recent months, we have seen an increased interest from people wanting REAL IDs. We started issuing them when we began setting up regional offices after the legislature shifted licensing to the cabinet in 2020,' Blair said. '…It's important to note that by law Kentucky is a voluntary state, and you can choose between a REAL ID compliant license or a standard credential. Both provide the same daily needs for driving and identification. The REAL ID version meets federal security requirements set up after 9/11.' In 2020, Kentucky House Bill 453, sponsored by Sal Santoro, a Florence Republican, made the KYTC the sole application and issuance entity for operator's licenses and personal identification cards while eliminating the requirements that these documents be applied for in one's county of residence. The bill also expanded the pre-existing list of documents an applicant can use when applying, and allow applicants to choose between four to eight years before renewal. That led to the creation of REAL ID Regional Offices, which gradually removed all driver's license duties out of the hands of circuit court clerks. Daviess County's regional office was opened in January 2021 inside the former Daviess County Operations Center at 2620 Kentucky 81. It took over all of the driver licenses and permit responsibilities from the Daviess circuit court clerk on Sept. 27, 2021. In the past, residents had to be issued their driver's licenses in their home counties. However, regional offices can issue licenses to any resident regardless of where he or she lives in the state. Before being issued a REAL ID, there are certain documents a person must possess. The first category is proof of identity — a certified birth certificate or a valid passport. The second category is proof of Social Security — an original Social Security card or a W2, or a 1099 from this year or last year with name and Social Security listed. The third category is proof of address — two bills with a name and address. Acceptable examples would be a medical bill, utility bill and a magazine subscription. Hurlburt Field Air Force base to require REAL ID for visitors
OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — Hurlburt Field Air Force base officials will require visitors to present a REAL ID beginning on May 7. Escambia County deputies seek man accused of stealing — and crashing — trailer According to an Air Force news release, if a visitor does not have the ID, they can use a non-compliant driver's license along with another form of identification to enter the base. The DoD components will accept different combinations of identification, including: Transportation Worker Identification Credential, along with a driver's license Veteran Health Identification Card, along with a driver's license Birth certificate, social security card and driver's license There are other acceptable IDs to get onto the base, including: DOD common access cards DOD uniformed services ID cards — military retiree or dependent IDs Local DOD access cards and passes — i.e. a Defense Biometric Identification System card or visitor passes REAL ID compliant driver's licenses, enhanced driver's licenses, or nondriver's identification cards issued by a state, territory, possession or the District of Columbia U.S. or foreign passport or passport cards Federal personal identification verification cards Non-federal PIV-interoperable cards Any Florida resident trying to gain access to the Gator Lakes Golf Course will also need a REAL ID to get a Hurlburt Field Golf Affidavit.
