Woman, 20, arrested for murder of 3-month-old baby in Limpopo village
A 20-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly choking a 3-month-old baby to death. The police were notified of the child's death on Friday evening after two people took the child to a clinic in Vleifontein in the Vhembe District of Limpopo, according to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba. The two people told police that they were at a house in the area along with the 20-year-old woman, who was holding the baby. The woman went inside, and when they went to check on her, they caught her choking the baby. They intervened and rushed the little boy to the clinic, but it was too late. 'A case of murder was immediately opened, and the suspect was traced and subsequently apprehended for the murder of a 3-month-old victim. The motive behind the incident is unknown,' Ledwaba added. The woman, who is a relative of the deceased, will appear in the Makhado Magistrate's Court on a charge of murder.

Vhembe boxers suffer defeats at tournament
Quick read Two Vhembe boxers, Rider Muleba and Humbulani Netshamutshedzi, suffered losses in international bouts. Muleba lost on points to Zimbabwe's Chiedza Homakona; Netshamutshedzi was defeated by TKO against Botswana's Mmusi Tswiige. Despite setbacks, organisers praised the talent shown and reaffirmed their commitment to developing rural boxing in the region. Full story LIMPOPO – It was a night to forget for local boxing fans as two of Vhembe's own fighters suffered disappointing defeats during the Mama Rocks Boxing Tournament held at Khoroni Hotel last Friday night. Rider Muleba, a female lightweight boxer from Tshidzini, was outclassed by her Zimbabwe-based opponent Chiedza Homakona, losing on points in their international lightweight bout. Muleba appeared unprepared and lacked energy from the outset, allowing Homakona to dominate the ring with relentless combinations and pressure. In the international middleweight division, Humbulani Netshamutshedzi, another local fighter, lost by technical knockout (TKO) to Mmusi Tswiige from Botswana. The defeat sparked concerns over Netshamutshedzi's boxing future, as this adds another loss to his record. Despite the setback, Netshamutshedzi remains optimistic: 'I haven't lost hope. I'll sit down with my team and make a decision from there. I still believe I have a bright future in boxing. My dreams aren't over.' Meanwhile, Tswiige expressed gratitude to his trainer and spoke of the positive role boxing plays in youth development. 'I'm proud of this win, and I believe I'm ready to take my career to the next level. Boxing keeps us away from bad habits like drugs and alcohol. It demands discipline and time in the gym.' The tournament was attended by Thovhele Vho-Gole Mphaphuli, who encouraged the young boxers to train hard and stay focused if they want to succeed in the sport. He also praised the tournament's promoter, MR Phathutshedzo Dongola, for his commitment to developing local talent. Dongola, who chairs the promoting body behind the event, said his goal is to uplift youth in rural communities. 'I saw great talent across the Vhembe region and decided to create a platform to support and develop boxers. Our goal is to keep young people off the streets and away from alcohol and substance abuse.' 'VBS was our lifeline': Ramokgopa pressures treasury to restore Limpopo's lost bank
ANC treasurer-general Gwen Ramokgopa pleads with government to help rebuild VBS. Image: File photo ANC treasurer-general Dr Gwen Ramokgopa issued a stirring plea to the South African Reserve Bank and National Treasury: step in and help to rebuild the looted and collapsed Venda Business Society (VBS) Mutual Bank. Ramokgopa was speaking on Thursday at a packed memorial service for ANC veteran and revered liberation figure, Reverend Dr Tshenuwani Simon Farisani, held at the George Phagadi Town Hall in Thohoyandou. The late struggle stalwart and former Lutheran bishop passed away on May 29. His funeral will take place on Saturday at the University of Venda Stadium. In her tribute, Ramokgopa honoured Farisani's lifelong commitment to justice, recalling his outspoken defence of VBS victims who lost life savings and community investments when the bank collapsed under a staggering R2 billion looting scandal. 'Government, under President Cyril Ramaphosa, has been for the people. We always said those who stole from VBS must be punished and languish in jail,' Ramokgopa said, adding that the Finance Department and the Reserve Bank should assist the suffering community to revive their only hope, VBS. In her address, Ramokgopa reminded the nation of the Vhembe community's enduring pain — a pain worsened by betrayal and scandal. Video Player is loading.
