More than a thread: Siblings who turned life saviours for rakhi bond
Lucknow: The bond of Rakshabandhan goes far beyond threads and rituals, a fact beautifully demonstrated by city siblings who saved each other's lives during medical emergencies.
Atul Pratap Singh, 39, who was diagnosed with a severe kidney ailment at the age of 26 and had to undergo dialysis, said he is alive today because of his sister, Vibha Singh (name changed) , who donated a kidney to him.
"I will always remain in her debt," said an emotional Atul.
"My kidneys started to fail and doctors advised a transplant. Without any hesitation, my sister offered to donate her kidney. She was tested and it was a perfect match, and after a successful transplant, I'm now fit and fine," he added.
In another example of a sister's selfless love, athlete Raj Sarki shared how his sister, Rajni Sarki, became a lifesaver when he had nearly given up hope.
"In 2022, I woke up one morning with blurred vision in my right eye. The doctor found my blood urea and creatinine levels were extremely high. I had to undergo dialysis and was later admitted to the hospital," he recalled. Doctors recommended an urgent kidney transplant as his kidney function had almost completely failed.

"My mother initially volunteered to donate, but doctors refused as she had diabetes. That's when my sister, who was married and had a one-and-a-half-year-old baby, got tested and donated her kidney to me," he said.
In another case, Shazia said she needed a bone marrow transplant in 2023 after being diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare and serious blood disorder where the bone marrow doesn't produce enough new blood cells. "Deepak, 55, my rakhi brother since childhood, donated blood for me," she said.
Samiya Hasan shared how her brother, Wasiq Hasan, 36, donated blood when she needed platelets after being diagnosed with dengue.
