Addicted to phone? This app will ask you Why every time you unlock your phone
Health experts frequently highlight the rising concerns around excessive screen time, citing issues like eye strain, neck pain, and poor posture. Yet, one of the most common problems today is the unconscious habit of reaching for phones without any clear purpose, often for comfort or distraction. These are also clinically observed behaviour concerns, belonging to conditions such as Phantom Vibration and Phantom Ringtone Syndrome. While lifestyle changes are advised, a new app called Intenty is gaining attention for offering a novel solution. Though seemingly ironic, the app gently prompts users to reflect on their intent each time they unlock their phones, helping break the cycle of mindless app to curb phone use: How does it workIntenty is a digital wellbeing app, which is popular for its innovative approach to curbing mindless phone use. Although originally released in 2020, the app has recently found renewed popularity, thanks in part to discussions on the Android subreddit, where users have praised its unique design and effectiveness. It is noteworthy that the app is yet to be launched for iOS and is only available on Play Store. Unlike traditional screen time trackers or restrictive app blockers, Intenty takes a subtler approach by inserting a moment of reflection each time a user unlocks their device. Upon unlocking, users are greeted with a full-screen text prompt, gently asking them to consider their motivation. The default message reads: 'How defined is your intention for this unlock?' Users are then given several options to select from, including 'No intention', 'Vague', 'Fair', 'Crystal clear', and a custom option for more personalised The goal is not to block access, but rather to introduce a small moment of self-awareness—a psychological 'speed bump', as described by the app's developer. 'This breaks the subconscious unlock, scroll habit before it can start,' the developer explains, highlighting how this gentle nudge encourages users to think twice before falling into aimless also offers alternative modes for users who want to focus on specific aspects of their phone use. These include:Necessity: Asking if the unlock is genuinely Encouraging users to check in with their emotions at the Reminding users to hold the device at eye level to avoid Prompting reflection on the value of the upcoming those looking for a more tailored experience, Intenty allows full customisation of these prompts. Users can create their own questions and track their responses over time through a history tab, which records previous answers along with the amount of time spent on the device during each interaction. This data can offer valuable insights into personal usage patterns and help users develop healthier digital Intenty offers a premium subscription tier that unlocks additional features, the core functionality remains fully accessible for free. Importantly, the app operates entirely on-device with no need for user accounts or online sign-ups, ensuring full privacy for those concerned about data security. With growing public awareness of the mental and emotional toll of excessive smartphone use, apps like Intenty are emerging as practical tools for those seeking to regain control of their digital lives. Rather than enforcing strict limits, Intenty empowers users to confront their habits and make conscious choices about when and why they engage with their devices.
