Community 'dreadfully upset' after scarecrows vandalised ahead of village show
Residents in Spaxton near Bridgwater are scrambling to repair more than a dozen scarecrows that were vandalised ahead of their annual village show. According to police, it appears the 20 homemade scarecrows in the village were driven over by a car overnight. Residents say children were left in tears after the incident but the community is determined to carry out the weekend's flower show as planned. Vicky Hemming, the chair of Spaxton Flower Show, explained: "Everybody was dreadfully upset but actually the really heartening point was that people came, we had a working party on the Wednesday night, about 30 people arrived and we pieced everything back together as best we could." Resident Ali Bond said: "The children were so upset." She added: "Children often walk along here to school in the morning and they saw everything strewn all over the floor, all their hard work." Avon and Somerset Police said: 'We received a 101 call to a report of criminal damage relating to 20 scarecrows, which were created as part of a village competition, at about 3.10pm on Wednesday 23 July. 'The scarecrows were placed along both sides of a road, and it appears a car has been used to drive over them. 'We believe the incident was carried out by somebody outside the village between 11.30pm on Tuesday 22 July and 6.30am on Wednesday 23 July. 'Any witnesses to the incident, or anybody who may have CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage of the incident or the moments leading up to it, are asked to call 101 quoting reference number 5225207898, or complete our online appeals form.'
