Braves improve infield depth with latest roster move

The post Braves improve infield depth with latest roster move appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Atlanta Braves stood pat at this year's Major League Baseball trade deadline. Braves manager Brian Snitker and the front office did not want to move on from their core despite their struggles this season. However, that doesn't mean that Atlanta is not going to make moves. To help fill the hole left by Austin Riley's injury, the Braves added former Baltimore Oriole Vidal Brujan. The Orioles added Brujan from waivers after the Chicago Cubs let him go earlier this season. The infielder gives Snitker depth on defense, as well as a versatile skillset. However, Brujan could be sent right back to the waiver wire after Riley returns. If he makes it to the end of the season, Atlanta is at the front of the line to retain him after claiming him off of waivers. Brujan has had a quiet season in 2025. After playing in 102 games for the Miami Marlins last season, teams around the league had interest in the infielder. However, Brujan struggled to find a spot in the Cubs' infield and couldn't stay on the team. The Orioles picked the veteran up, but he only played one game for Baltimore before they moved on. The Braves mark Brujan's fourth team in the last two years. While he might not fit into the Braves' long term plans, the infielder can only hope that his new team gives him a chance to prove himself on a new roster. Riley has less than a week before he is eligible to come off the injured list, though. Brujan was a plus defender during his last full season. Unfortunately, his bat has not kept up with his ability in the field. In a league where players need to be able to do both, Brujan quickly found himself outclassed. However, he has a new opportunity to rebuild his value ahead of free agency. Braves run out brutal bottom of the lineup in second doubleheader game

The Braves are running with a pretty rough bottom of the lineup, with newly acquired Vidal Brujan playing right field and batting seventh, ahead of Luke Williams and Nick Allen. Drake Baldwin gets the nod at catcher, after Murphy caught game one in the heat of day. Marcell Ozuna bats cleanup behind Baldwin and ahead of the resurgent Michael Harris. Meanwhile, the Marlins shuffle their lineup around, with Ramirez DHing after catching the day game at the third spot and Hicks taking over at cleanup. They also significantly shuffled the back of their lineup. Tonight's game starts at 7:15 PM ET and can be watched on the normal platforms. Orioles activate INF/OF Vidal Brujan, LHP Cade Povich

August 4 - The Baltimore Orioles activated infielder/outfielder Vidal Brujan after he was claimed off waivers Sunday and brought back left-hander Cade Povich from the injured list. In corresponding moves, the Orioles optioned right-hander Houston Roth and outfielder Jordyn Adams to Triple-A Norfolk. Brujan, 27, was designated for assignment Wednesday by the Chicago Cubs after he batted .222 with three RBIs in 36 games. Brujan is a career .192 hitter with five home runs, 43 RBIs and 16 stolen bases in 237 games with the Tampa Bay Rays (2021-23), Marlins (2024) and Cubs. Povich, 25, was 2-5 with a 5.15 ERA in 13 appearances (12 starts) for Baltimore earlier this season. He has been out since June 16 with left hip inflammation. Roth, 27, had his contract selected by the Orioles on Tuesday but did not appear in a major league game. Adams, 25, had his contract selected Friday. He has three at-bats over eight games with the Orioles this season. --Field Level Media

Cubs designate INF/OF Vidal Brujan for assignment

July 30 - The Chicago Cubs designated utilityman Vidal Brujan for assignment ahead of Wednesday afternoon's series finale in Milwaukee. Brujan, 27, is hitting .222 with three RBIs in 36 games this season, his first with Chicago following a December trade with the Miami Marlins. Defensively, Brujan has played innings this season at second base, shortstop, third base and all three outfield spots. Brujan is a career .192 hitter with five homers, 43 RBIs and 16 stolen bases in 237 games with the Tampa Bay Rays (2021-23), Marlins (2024) and Cubs. Chicago also recalled catcher/DH Moises Ballesteros from Triple-A Iowa and reinstated right-hander Porter Hodge (right shoulder impingement) from the 15-day injured list. Hodge was optioned to Iowa. --Field Level Media

Cubs Predicted To Cut Ties With Offseason Trade Acquisition This Season

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Chicago Cubs are loaded with talent, but they're expected to acquire more talented players before the trade deadline. If the Cubs are going to go trade for two or three players to add to the active roster, they're also going to have to cut a few players on the team right now. While this is typically a tough decision, the Cubs have an obvious candidate to be designated for assignment: utility man Vidal Brujan. FanSided's Zachary Rotman recently predicted the Cubs would cut ties with Brujan in the coming weeks, too. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 08: A detail of a Chicago Cubs logo on a helmet against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on June 08, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan."Small sample, sure, but Brujan has been on the active roster since mid-April when he was activated off the IL and has started a total of six games," Rotman wrote. "Yes, he's essentially started two games per month for half the season, which is absurd. For the most part, he's either entered a game as a defensive replacement, a pinch-runner, or as a pinch-hitter in a blowout. "Brujan can play a variety of positions, which is valuable, but what else does he offer? He has a .389 OPS this season and a .522 OPS in parts of five MLB seasons, so he can't really hit. He's known for having good speed, but he's stolen only 16 bases in 30 attempts in his career, has gone 2-for-3 this season, and ranks in the 42nd percentile in sprint speed according to Baseball Savant." The Cubs acquired Brujan in a trade during the offseason, but it never really made much sense. He doesn't excel at anything, and Chicago's lineup is way too loaded with talent for Brujan to ever earn any regular playing time. Cutting him seems like the obvious move. He's likely going to be the first player to go from the roster when the Cubs begin making their big trade deadline acquisitions that everybody seemingly expects them to make.
