Bengaluru stampede: How RCB's victory parade turned into a deadly tragedy

What began as a day of rapturous celebration over the IPL victory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) turned into one of crushing tragedy in Bengaluru on June 4, 2025 evening, when 11 people — all aged below 40 — died and scores of others were injured when a massive build up of fans at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium led to chaos and stampede. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered a magisterial enquiry into the incident that drew sharp criticism over failed crowd management by the opposition. He also announced an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh to the families of the deceased fans. 11 die in stampede as RCB victory celebrations turn tragic at Bengaluru An open-air felicitation to the RCB team — to mark its historic first IPL title win in 18 years — on the steps of the Vidhana Soudha and confused messaging over a victory parade by the team in Bengaluru, despite the city police never clearing it, brought over two lakh people onto the streets, sources said. Desperate to get a glimpse of the famed trophy and the players of RCB, the crowds resorted to climbing trees, compound walls and even roofs of buildings. It was at the stadium that things came to a head, eventually leading to a stampede. Due to overcrowding and narrow passageways, the 32,000-capacity stadium, already packed to the brim, witnessed a deadly rush leading to the tragedy. Doctors attributed all the deaths to asphyxia, a condition arising when the body is deprived of oxygen, causing unconsciousness or death. The Karnataka High Court has directed the Advocate General to get instructions from the State Government on the deaths caused by the stampede. Meanwhile, in a move that raised eyebrows, Bengaluru City Police did not register any First Information Report (FIR) regarding the stampede. Instead, they filed 11 separate Unnatural Death Reports (UDRs). On June 5, 2025, State Home Minister G. Parameshwara said that the Karnataka government has decided to formulate a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for mega events, meetings and celebrations aimed at preventing any untoward incidents in the future.

"Bengaluru stampede avoidable; who will take responsibility for mismanagement?" BJP's BY Vijayendra slams Karnataka govt

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 5 (ANI): Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra on Thursday, strongly criticised the state government over the stampede near M Chinnaswamy Stadium that resulted in multiple casualties, calling the incident avoidable and holding the government accountable for mismanagement. Vijayendra questioned the state's decision to organise the event with haste, saying, 'Who will take responsibility for the stampede? The tragedy could have been avoided if the state government had managed things properly. In the final match held in Ahmedabad, 1.5 lakh people gathered, and no such tragedy occurred there. Why did the state government organise the event with such haste? Why was permission given to hold the event yesterday without proper preparation? What was the necessity of celebrating in front of the Vidhana Soudha? Whether the Deputy Chief Minister or the Chief Minister organised it must be clarified.' He further pointed out that the stampede had already occurred near the stadium even before the players had left the Taj West End Hotel. 'At such a time, why did the government decide to go ahead with celebrations at the Vidhana Soudha? Even when deaths and injuries were being reported, why did they continue with the celebrations? The state's Deputy Chief Minister went to the event at Chinnaswamy Stadium. At the time of the incident, ambulances were not arranged,' Vijayendra said. He criticised the state government for ordering a magistrate's investigation rather than a judicial inquiry and accused the Chief Minister and ministers of being overly obsessed with publicity. The BJP leader also condemned the compensation announced by the government, calling it inadequate. 'They have announced only Rs 10 lakh as compensation. When someone dies due to an elephant attack in Kerala, Rs 25 lakh is given. Then, for the people of our state who lost their lives, Rs 50 lakh compensation must be given. The RCB owners must also provide compensation,' he asserted. Vijayendra alleged that no precautionary measures were taken to organise the event and demanded accountability. 'The situation has come to a point where the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Ministers, and the Home Minister must resign,' he added. Earlier today, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara inspected the stampede site at the Chinnaswamy stadium. The stampede had killed 11 people and injured several. The Home Minister said that the state government had not asked the Royal Challengers Bangalore or the Karnataka Cricket Association to organise the victory celebrations at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Speaking to the media, Parameshwara said, 'We did not request RCB or the KCA, they organised it (the victory celebration). They are the ones who brought the team to Bengaluru. The government also felt it should facilitate this, as it was the Bengaluru team. I feel very sorry that this incident happened.' Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, CM Siddaramaiah said, '11 died and 33 were injured in the stampede. This tragedy should not have happened. The government expresses deep sorrow over this incident. 'The Karnataka CM further asserted that he has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter.'I don't want to defend this incident. Our government will not do politics on this. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry and given 15 days. People even broke the gates of the stadium. There was a stampede. No one expected such a huge crowd. The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000 people, but 2-3 lakh people came,' CM Siddaramaiah said. The incident occurred near the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where thousands of fans gathered to see RCB players after the franchise won the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. (ANI)

Bengaluru stampede aftermath: Scene strewn with footwear, bent railings; video shows haunting trail of panic

NEW DELHI: The aftermath of Wednesday's deadly stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium was starkly visible on Thursday morning. Twisted railings at the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha, footwear strewn across entry points, and signs of a city still reeling from the tragedy that unfolded during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory celebrations. At least 11 people died and 75 were injured in one of the worst fan-related tragedies in Indian cricket history. The stampede broke out at Gate No. 7 of the stadium, around two kilometres from the state assembly, after rumours spread that free tickets were being distributed for the felicitation event. Visuals from the site showed belongings of victims scattered across the road — slippers, broken barricades, torn shirts — painting a grim picture of the scale of panic. 'People completely lost control. It was a disaster,' said Achimanya, an eyewitness from Rajajinagar. The chaos intensified around 5:30 pm when sudden rain added to the confusion. With poor crowd management and ambiguity around the entry process, the crowd surged forward, causing a fatal crush. The Karnataka government, under criticism from the opposition BJP, has announced a Rs 10 lakh compensation to families of the deceased and free treatment to the injured. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) also pledged Rs 5 lakh to each bereaved family. Meanwhile, a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to investigate the lapses. Eyewitnesses allege that police presence was inadequate, especially as over 3 lakh fans poured into the area for the celebrations. With both the Vidhana Soudha event and the stadium felicitation scheduled back-to-back, the stretched police force struggled to maintain control. Lathi charges were reported near Cubbon Park Circle, as ambulances tried to clear a path through the packed crowd. 'I could avoid the worst only because I reached late,' said Sinchana N (25), a survivor. 'Cops were not controlling the crowd in the real sense, and were just pushing people around.' Despite prior warnings, officials went ahead with plans for a victory parade featuring Virat Kohli and the RCB squad, celebrating their first-ever IPL title win. Lack of clear communication on ticket distribution and entry gates further contributed to the confusion.

"Players Had Commitments": Siddaramaiah Aide On Short Notice For RCB Event

The size of the crowd that had gathered for the celebrations of RCB's victory in the IPL was unexpected and "nobody could have visualised it", Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's Political Secretary Naseer Ahmed has said, after at least 11 people died in a stampede on Wednesday. "Time was also very short, it was not announced. The match was yesterday and today, in a very short time, whatever best possible arrangements could be made, were made," he said. When NDTV asked if the celebration should have been held later, he said, "The situation was such... Many players had commitments and insisted it should be done today... RCB is a Bengaluru team, they just wanted to come and participate." Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the Indian Premier League on Tuesday - marking a major milestone for Virat Kohli and the team's fans, who waited 18 years for the day - and huge crowds gathered at the Vidhana Soudha - the state legislature - and the Chinnaswamy Stadium to greet the team on Wednesday afternoon. The players met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the Vidhana Soudha and were felicitated there, after which they went to the stadium, took victory laps and celebrated with the trophy as adoring fans looked on. Stampedes occurred both outside the Vidhana Soudha, where two people died, and the stadium, where another nine were killed.
