Sri Lankan Tamil arrives in Dhanushkodi illegally via boat
A Sri Lankan Tamil, who arrived in Dhanushkodi here on Tuesday seeking refuge, was housed in the Mandapam camp.
Vidhurshiya, 25, a resident of the Andankulam area of Mannar district in Sri Lanka, was living in the Palani of Dindigul district with her family as a Sri Lankan refugee. In April of this year, she returned to Sri Lanka by flight.
After arriving in Sri Lanka, she was unable to make a living. To be with her family again, she illegally boarded a fiberglass boat from the Mannar coast at 1 a.m. on Monday night and landed on the Arichalmunai coast of Dhanushkodi at 3 a.m.
Upon receiving information, marine police took Vidhurshiya from Dhanushkodi to the Mandapam Marine Police Station for an inquiry and she was later taken to the Mandapam refugee camp.
Furthermore, following the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, the number of refugees from Sri Lanka who have come to Tamil Nadu since March 2022 has risen to 321.
