Udupi to launch dengue and malaria prevention drive in June, July

Udupi: In a bid to reduce the number of dengue and malaria cases, the Udupi district administration has decided to carry out prevention activities across the district in June and July. Deputy commissioner Vidya Kumari said awareness should be created among people on measures to prevent dengue and malaria in the district. Further, the district also needs to implement preventive measures effectively to make Karnataka free from malaria in 2025. The district carried out drives as part of World Malaria Day to prevent the spread of the disease with the slogan 'Malaria ends with us: reinvest, reimagine, reignite'. Similarly, various initiatives were taken up as part of National Dengue Day with the slogan 'Check, clean, cover: steps to defeat dengue', the DC informed. "Due to continued efforts, Udupi witnessed a drastic decline in the number of malaria cases, and it aims to become completely free from the disease. Currently, the district is in the elimination phase when it comes to malaria. Hence, effective measures should be taken to prevent the spread of malaria," the DC said. The number of malaria cases in the district reduced from 2,217 in 2012 to six in 2024. The district reported only two cases between Jan and May this year. Meanwhile, the number of dengue cases in the district increased from 126 in 2012 to 601 in 2024. The district reported 54 dengue cases between Jan and May this year, the DC informed.
