Veterans gather in Fall River to mark 50 years since fall of Saigon

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — April 30, 2025, marks 50 years since the fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War. Veterans and local officials gathered in Fall River on Wednesday at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Veterans Memorial Bicentennial Park to honor the tens of thousands of U.S. soldiers who lost their lives during the conflict, as well as to reflect on their wartime experiences. The Vietnam War was divisive in America, with soldiers facing criticism and pushback upon their arrival home. Patricia McCorry, who was an operating room nurse during the war, said the lives she was able to save made her service worthwhile. 'One person's life that I might've saved or helped save produced generations,' McCorry said. 'That person may have been married and had kids who had kids. So the importance of just saving one life became more meaningful for me.' Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan stressed the importance of these ceremonies for both Vietnam veterans and the friends they lost overseas. MORE: Rhode Island Vietnam veteran still serving decades later 'It created a lot of division in the country for a long, long time,' Coogan said. 'It's nice to have events like this to try to keep people focused on what sacrifice really means and what went on back in the '70s and the '60s.' Coogan said he hopes the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Fall River can continue to serve as a reminder of the sacrifices soldiers made during the Vietnam the and apps to get breaking news and weather alerts. ‘There's no atheists in a foxhole': Special Easter service held in honor of Vietnam Veterans

58,220 military servicemen and women served overseas in the Vietnam War and never came back, paying the ultimate sacrifice for their country. On Sunday morning, a special sunrise Easter service was held next to the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Callahan that pays tribute to those fallen veterans. 'The sunrise service, with this being Easter Sunday, is perfect the way to remember the men and women on the Vietnam wall, or the 9/11, Iraq, [or] Afghanistan,' said wall manager Doc Russo. 'It's just a phenomenal way for the vets to get together and remember.' >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Read: Maintenance work to begin on the Buckman Bridge this week While honoring those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, that Easter service Sunday morning meant something a little bit more for the Vietnam service men & women watching on. 'They say over and over again, there's no atheists in a foxhole,' Russo added. 'And it proves its point over and over again for everybody that's ever worn a uniform, that's ever had to deal with the tragedy or loss of a comrade, for them to be able to come out here and today, to remember their friends on the wall and be here for the church services. It's just good.' Read: Lowe's, Target, others will be closed on Easter The commemoration of the Easter holiday also serves as a sendoff to the traveling memorial wall. Monday, it makes its way to its permanent home in Melbourne in central Florida. 'I remember the movie that was made about the building of the wall,' Vietnam veteran Ned Sugdennis reminisced Sunday morning. 'They were collecting money, and there was a woman who came up and she made a donation and said, 'I was against the war, but I never should have been against you.' And that just says it all.' Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall arrives in Callahan with community escort

Veterans hold a special place within the Northeast Florida and Callahan communities. 'We have a huge presence here, my family for sure is just full of veterans,' said Event Coordinator for the town of Hilliard, Alicia Head. That's why Thursday morning, dozens of veterans, law enforcement, and community volunteers escorted the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall to its new temporary home at the Northeast Florida Fairgrounds in Callahan. The wall will stay in Callahan through Monday, honoring Vietnam veterans like retired Army member Ben Carl Youmans, who never received their 'thank you for your service' decades ago. 'A lot of guys I knew got spit on, got called names. So this, in effect, is for the previous generation to honor now,' Youmans told Action News Jax Thursday morning. He said there are 58,281 men and eight women on that wall. 'And now they're getting that respect they really deserve.' >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< The memorial wall also serves to honor those who never made it back from the war, while looking to educate the younger generation on a war and struggle Youmans feels has been sometimes forgotten. 'It means a lot for the younger people to recognize that military should not be forgotten in this country,' Youmans added. Plenty of those younger people will be out here at the wall on scheduled school field trips Friday. The Town of Hilliard celebrated the wall's arrival, calling the escort 'nothing short of powerful: 'The love and respect shown—every vehicle that pulled over on SR 200 and US 1, every person who stood with hand over heart or salute in place—was a reminder of the unity, pride, and reverence our small town holds for those who served. It was emotional. It was humbling. It was honor. 'So many hands showed up to help—volunteers who helped with the set-up, those who quietly decorated with care, and folks who just showed up to support in any way they could. Every single act mattered. You could feel the weight of what this wall represents in every detail.' There will be a sunrise Easter service at the wall on Sunday at 7 a.m., with a closing ceremony at 8 p.m. The wall will remain open for visiting 24/7 until it heads to a new destination.
