Residents evacuated as major fire breaks out at university north of Rome

The fire broke out on the roof of the university's agriculture faculty building shortly after 10am, Italian media reported. As of mid-afternoon on Wednesday, firefighters and military officers were still struggling to contain the blaze. #Viterbo, #incendio facoltà di agraria: proseguono le operazioni di spegnimento dall'esterno dell'edificio, #vigilidelfuoco in azione di contenimento delle fiamme che hanno coinvolto il 2° piano, oltre al tetto [ #4giugno 12:30] — Vigili del Fuoco (@vigilidelfuoco) June 4, 2025 Everyone within 500 metres of the building, including local residents, was evacuated and those within a 1-kilometre radius instructed to close their windows to avoid inhaling smoke. No injuries were immediately reported, though some in the vicinity were sent to Santa Rosa hospital with smoke inhalation symptoms. A worker who was initially reported missing has since been found, La Repubblica newspaper said. Dramatic video footage published on the paper's website showed flames engulfing the roof of the building. The Viterbo Prosecutor's Office is reportedly waiting to receive information from the firefighters and rescue workers on the ground before opening an investigation into the cause of the fire. According to initial reports, the roof had been undergoing renovation work by workers who were using an oxyacetylene torch for welding. It may then have spread to chemistry and genetics laboratories where highly flammable substances including ethanol were stored. Patrizia Marini, president of Italy's national association of agricultural institutes, RENISA, told reporters she was 'very saddened by the serious incident that has occurred in one of Italy's most important agricultural colleges.'

The Italian coast guard is supervising operations and patrolling the security perimeter to ensure the safety of personnel working on the recovery. It said that the overall operation to retrieve the Bayesian could take from 20 to 25 days. After the wreck is brought ashore, judicial authorities investigating the sinking will examine it. Prosecutors are investigating the captain and two crew members for possible responsibility in connection with the Aug. 19, 2024, sinking. The 56-meter (183-foot)-long, 473-ton yacht sank during what appears to have been a sudden downburst, or localized powerful wind from a thunderstorm that spreads rapidly after hitting the surface. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The yacht's 75-meter (246-foot) aluminum mast — the second tallest in the world — will be cut to allow the hull, which lies 49 meters (160 feet) below the surface, to be brought to the surface more easily, said coast guard Capt. Nicola Silvestri. In addition to Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and wife Judy, attorney Chris Morvillo and wife Neda, and ship's cook Recaldo Thomas died in the shipwreck. With the help of nearby vessels, 15 of the 22 people were rescued in the initial phase, one body was recovered, and six others reported missing. The bodies of the six missing people were found following long and complex search efforts, which continued until Aug. 23. Sports Toronto Maple Leafs Sunshine Girls Toronto & GTA Editorial Cartoons

Italian woman pulled alive from rubble after Bari building collapse

The rescue took place on Thursday evening and was met with an emotional round of applause from onlookers, as seen in a video posted by Italy's fire service on social media platform X. È viva‼️Estratta dalle macerie e affidata ai sanitari la donna dispersa. Eccezionale intervento dei #vigilidelfuoco a #Bari, emozionante l'applauso finale liberatorio della gente — Vigili del Fuoco (@vigilidelfuoco) March 6, 2025 Rosalia De Giosa, 74, had been missing since Wednesday afternoon following the collapse of a residential building on Via de Amicis, just south of the city's train station. The building was evacuated by local authorities in February last year after being deemed structurally unsafe due to a damaged central pillar. Italian media reports said the woman had defied the evacuation order and continued to live in her fourth-floor apartment. Following the rescue, emergency medical personnel immediately assessed De Giosa's condition before transporting her to the local hospital for further treatment. The Bari fire service said De Giosa 'appears to be in good health', according to news agency Ansa. "She was found inside the building, in the area of the stairs,' Bari fire service commander Rosa D'Eliseo said. "She was taking the stairs to get out [of the building]; evidently, she sensed the danger and was running away," she added. A passerby who witnessed the collapse told Rai News that it was "a scary, apocalyptic scene", with "dust everywhere [and] people screaming, running in every direction". D'Eliseo said the collapse was caused by structural failure. 'A part [of the building] collapsed first, which then brought down the rest," she said. The Public Prosecutor's Office in Bari opened an investigation into the incident on Thursday, according to Ansa.

Storm Herminia brings strong winds and heavy rain to Italy and France

Storm Herminia is continuing to make its way across Europe, with parts of Italy and France battered by heavy rain and strong winds. Italy's Tuscany and Liguria regions have been particularly affected with flash flooding hitting the streets and underpasses of Florence. Intense winds caused a wall to collapse in Genoa, with firefighters searching the rubble to ensure no-one was trapped under it. A landslide also blocked a road between Busalla and Mignanego. According to the Italian fire service, Vigili del Fuoco, no homes had been affected but a number of cars were hit. Meanwhile, three French departments remain under a red weather alert, including Ille-et-Vilaine after Storm Herminia caused the worst flooding there in 40 years.
