2 killed in tunnel collapse on Indore-Ichhapur highway
Indore: Two workers were killed after a portion of an under-construction tunnel on the Indore-Ichhapur highway near Simrol collapsed trapping them under the debris on Wednesday morning. DSP Umakant Choudhary said, "The incident took place around 4 am at the 4.1-kilometre-long tunnel being constructed on the Mhow-Sanawad section. A portion of the tunnel caved in, killing two workers." The construction work was underway by a Hyderabad-based company, he said. The deceased were identified as Vikas Rai, 29, from Jharkhand's Giridih district while the other was Lalji Kaul, 26, from Singrauli in MP. Kaul was critically injured and initially admitted to a hospital before being referred to MY Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

MP: 2 dead as tunnel collapses near Mhow
Bhopal: Two workers lost their lives on Wednesday when a section of an under-construction tunnel collapsed near Choral on the Indore-Ichhapur National Highway, officials said. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. at Tunnel Number 3, the part of a major infrastructure project, aimed at improving connectivity between Indore and Khandwa. Speaking to IANS, Deputy Superintendent of Police Umakant Choudhary said, "Persistent heavy rainfall loosened the surrounding soil and triggered the collapse. It caused the outer face of the tunnel to give way. One worker died on the spot, while the other succumbed to injuries in a hospital." The official also added, "A MERG report has been filed, and we will investigate the matter once the post-mortem reports are received. The investigation will focus on whether safety protocols were adequately followed, especially given the ongoing monsoon season, which often heightens the risk of such accidents." The deceased have been identified as Vikas Rai, 29, a native of Jhonka Vermasia in Jharkhand's Giridih district, and Lalji Kaul, a resident of Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh. "Both workers were reportedly staying in a labour camp near the construction site," the officer added. Rai died on the spot after being buried under debris, while Kaul was initially admitted to a private hospital in Mhow and later referred to the Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital in Indore, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the local administration rushed to the site to oversee rescue operations and assess the structural integrity of the remaining tunnel sections. The tunnel, being constructed by a Hyderabad-based private firm, is part of a 4.1-km stretch designed to reduce travel time and improve road safety by minimising sharp turns along the highway. Both ends of the tunnel had recently been cleared, and strengthening work was underway. The tunnel was scheduled to open for traffic in June 2026. This incident has reignited concerns over construction safety in the region. A few days earlier, a similar tragedy occurred in Jhabua district, where the roof of an under-construction cinema hall collapsed, killing two workers and injuring three others. That project was reportedly being carried out without proper permissions, raising questions about regulatory oversight and enforcement.

Thieves break into Lucknow home, cook Maggi, relax in AC — then rob retired banker
LUCKNOW: Realizing that they had all the time in the world, a group of thieves broke into the home of a retired banker in Indira Nagar in the city, leisurely cooked noodles, switched on the AC to relax for a while, and then decamped with valuables — all this while the homeowners were away in Delhi. The incident took place in the C-Block house of Bhupal Singh, who left for Delhi on June 8 with his family for treatment. Both his sons serve in the Indian Army. "Ghazipur police are aware of the robbery. We will commence legal action once a formal complaint is registered," Vikas Rai, SHO of Ghazipur (Indiranagar), said. A video of the ransacked house, which has since gone viral, shows a plate with cooked noodles — evidence suggesting the intruders helped themselves to a "Maggi party" before looting the premises. The theft came to light when Deepa Bisht, a neighbour, who was requested to water the plants in the owner's absence, noticed lights inside switched on and the lock on the front door broken. Upon entering the house, she found the rooms in disarray and alerted other neighbours, who notified police. Family members said most of the jewellery was taken to Delhi but, that, the robbers helped themselves to whatever cash and other valuable items they could find. Although there was no CCTV inside the house, police are reviewing footage from surrounding areas to identify the culprits. Curiously, this isn't the first time such a relaxed robbery has taken place in the area. In a 2024 incident at Sector 20, a thief broke into the residence of Dr Sunil Pandey — a doctor then posted at Balrampur hospital and now serving in Varanasi — and after gathering together some valuables, turned on the AC and fell asleep. Neighbours found the robber, reeking of alcohol and still passed out, inside the house the next day and notified police. "We are taking the latest incident seriously and are investigating whether the same group could be behind both break-ins," Ghazipur police said.
